The Indian King Tavern Muse-
um is looking to expand, and to do
that, it must start from the
ground and work its way up. The
work started about 20 feet below
ground, to be exact.
The archeology dig was very
helpful, Garry Stone, historian
for the Indian King Tavern Muse-
um, said. We answered some
questions we had and some new
questions were brought up, too.
The archeology dig is part of a
reconstruction process that has
been going on since 2009, when
the museum was given a $50,000
grant from the New Jersey His-
toric Trust.
The initial grant was used to
hire Watson and Henry Associ-
ates to conduct an architectural
study on The Ark, which was a
portion of the Indian King Tav-
ern Museum that was demolished
in 1909. The study was completed
in September 2013.
The study they did was
tremendous, Stone said. It
helped us to understand the histo-
ry of the old building and allowed
us to see what problems need to
be addressed moving forward.
The focus of the project is the
reconstruction of The Ark. The
current museum falls short in
many areas, according to Stone.
Problems he sees include no pub-
lic restrooms, no handicap acces-
sibility and a limit to the number
of people who can be on the sec-
ond floor of the building.
These problems really hinder
us from being able to do a lot of
things, he said. This project can
tell us how we can reconstruct the
section of the building that was
torn down in a way that is histori-

Workers dig at Indian King Tavern Museum, where an archeology dig took place to unearth The Ark. The dig was part of a large project aimed
at reconstructing the section of the museum that was demolished in 1909. The museum does not have enough room and with the expansion,
would be able to offer public restrooms and handicap accessibility to visitors.

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association announced
the state-by-state winners of its inaugural
High School Coach of the Year award.
One boys coach and one girls coach from
each of the 50 states were honored for the
2014 track and field season.
Jason Russo, the girls cross country
coach at Haddonfield Memorial High
School, was selected as the High School
Coach of the Year for New Jersey.
The winners from each state are in con-
sideration for the associations first-ever
National High School Coach of the Year
award. Selected by a panel of track and
field experts, one boys coach and one girls
coach from among all the states will be an-
nounced later this month as the national
winners.
"Weve established a tradition of recog-
nizing our nations top collegiate coaches
on a yearly basis, and we felt it was time to
shine the spotlight on our best coaches at
the high school level," USTFCCCA CEO
Sam Seemes said.
"As a professional coaches association,
we deeply value the excellent work being
done by high school coaches around the
country, embodied by all of todays award
winners. They are not only preparing stu-
dent-athletes for their next competitions
but, more importantly, the next steps along
their paths to adulthood."
State-by-state winners were selected
based on their teams performances
throughout the 2014 track and field season.
Among the factors taken into considera-
tion were team score and placement at the
state championships, the number of differ-
ent events in which student-athletes were
qualified, individual championships and
how their teams performances stacked up
to previous years.
"This is the most prestigious award that
a high school coach could ever attain," Na-
tional Senate of High School Track Coach-
es Associations Executive Chair Don Hel-
berg said. "I am so happy and proud that
USTFCCCA has added this award to the
collegiate awards they already present."
An inaugural High School Coach of the
Year award for cross-country will be
bestowed during the upcoming 2014 sea-
son.

W
ith schools preparing to
open their doors soon, now
is a good time to talk about
the upcoming academic year.
This week, were featuring our sec-
ond Back to School special section,
which is included inside this issue.
Next week, well have more compre-
hensive back to school coverage, in-
cluding a Q&A with the superintend-
ent of the school district to keep you
informed of all the changes and excite-
ment on the horizon for the 2014-2015
school year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity. Recently, we created an On
Campus section of our paper to do
just that to recognize the hard-work-
ing students in a way that stands out
from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

New Jersey Monthly has an-
nounced the results of its 2014
survey of the states Top Public
High Schools.
A list of the Top 100 public high
schools appears in the September
issue of New Jersey Monthly,
which will be available on news-
stands Aug. 26. A complete list of
all 339 schools rated by the maga-
zine will be published Sept. 2 at
www.njmonthly.com.
New Jersey Monthly publishes
its list of the best high schools in
New Jersey every other year. The
rankings are compiled by Leflein
Associates, an independent re-
search company in Ringwood,
and are based on data for the 2012-
2013 school year reported by the
schools to the State Department
of Education. Among the factors
taken into consideration are stu-
dent/teacher ratio; student re-
sults on the SAT, HSPA and AP or
IB tests; and graduation rates.
In keeping with changes in
data provided by the DOE, this
years rankings include two new
factors. The SAT performance
score for each school is based on
the percentage of students scor-
ing 1,550 or better on the annual
tests, a benchmark the DOE says
is associated with a high likeli-
hood of college success. Also,
the Student Outcomes score in-
cludes post-secondary enroll-
ment, a calculation of the per-
centage of students enrolled in a
two- or four-year college at least
16 months after high school grad-
uation.
We specifically added these
new data points to our scoring
system to help identify the high
schools that are doing the best job
in preparing their students for
success at the college level, says
New Jersey Monthly editor Ken
Haddonfield Memorial named
a top high school in state
please see HMHS, page 12
Schlager.
The September issue of New
Jersey Monthly also examines
the Garden States readiness for
the new Common Core-aligned
PARCC tests. In a spirited debate,
the magazine also presents the
case for and against the current
school reform movement. And
theres an in-depth look at the
new generation of high-tech,
high-performing vocational
schools.

Haddonfield memories from over the years
C E L E B R A T I N G 1 0
Y E A R S
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
It was 10 years ago that the
Partnership for Haddonfield was
created. In that 10 years, it has
continued to promote the growth
of businesses in the downtown
area.
Before the Partnership was
created, Haddonfield was home to
a loosely organized business asso-
ciation. The organization was
completely voluntary, and there
was not much leadership, accord-
ing to Deb Hansen.
We saw what the business as-
sociation was doing and it just
wasnt organized enough to really
help promote the businesses of
Haddonfield, Hansen, an origi-
nal member of the Partnership,
said. It was important that the
business association have some
structure, so the decision was
made to create something new.
The Partnership adopted a mis-
sion to encourage businesses to
come to downtown and to stay
there. To do this, it created self-
help and self-financing programs,
and a public relations depart-
ment to assist with marketing.
We wanted to do so much
more than just give businesses
discounts, Hansen said. We
wanted to improve the physical
appearance of downtown and cre-
ate events that would bring peo-
ple to the community.
Some of these events include
the Craft and Fine Arts Festival,
First Friday networking events
and First Thursdays.
The Partnership also brought
in a retail recruiter, a position
now occupied by Remi Fortunato,
to attract a larger variety of busi-
nesses to the area.
Haddonfield is so unique, and
we wanted downtown to translate
that with a blend of unique
stores, Fortunato said. So,
weve made a concerted effort to
bring in shops that offer a blend
of different products and servic-
es.
Fortunato sees Haddonfield as
a place with a personal touch,
where storeowners know their
customers by name and there is
open communication between the
community.
We are striving to keep the
small town feel of Haddonfield
alive, Fortunato said. We are
doing it one shop at a time, and it
seems to be working.
Commissioner Neal Rochford
has always been a huge supporter
of the Partnership and agrees
with Fortunato about the success
it has had.
They have done a wonderful
job with turning Haddonfield into
a brand, Rochford said. The
people of this community have al-
ways known what a great place it
was, but the Partnership for Had-
donfield has let everyone else
know, and that has helped us
bring in a lot more businesses.
As Rochford puts it, the Part-
nership has put feet on the
street in downtown. And the
businesses continue to move in.
We are expecting four new
stores to move to Haddonfield in
the next few months, Fortunato
said. Two of the stores, a spice
shop and apparel store, will be
moving in very soon. And were
hoping to have even more coming
in by the end of the year.
We work hard to get the kind
of tenants we want in this com-
munity, Hansen said. Not every
business belongs in Haddonfield,
but the ones that do seem to love
it here.
Moving forward, Rochford sees
the Partnership continuing to ex-
pand its marketing to reach more
people.
The Partnership for Haddon-
field has already shown that it
can attract new businesses to the
borough, and now the word is
spreading, he said. We have to
just continue to expand our mar-
keting approach, especially with
social media. The borough speaks
for itself, and once businesses get
here, they see what a great place
it is. We just have to continue to
get people to come here.

The Partnership for Haddonfield was created 10 years ago to pro-
mote growth in the boroughs downtown. To do this, the Partnership
created self-help and self-financing programs, put together a public
relations department to promote special downtown events and hired
a retail recruiter.

cally accurate.
To truly be accurate, however,
they needed to see what was left
of the demolished building. In ad-
dition to the New Jersey Historic
Trust grant, the museum re-
ceived a $17,000 grant from the Di-
vision of Parks and Forestry and
a $2,500 grant from the Haddon-
field Foundation to fund the exca-
vation.
Much of the labor was done by
Hunter Research Inc., which is
also responsible for the analysis
and report that will come from
the dig. There were also volun-
teers who assisted with the exca-
vation.
We got a lot of help from the
community and the borough,
Stone said. It was a group effort,
and we worked together to make
this project happen.
While the archeology dig is
complete, there is still more work
to be done. The research is going
to be analyzed, which will deter-
mine how the reconstruction will
be done, but even before that,
Stone expects there to be more
studies.
I think there will need to be
two more archeology digs, he
said. One to answer any questions
we may have after studying the
data we just collected and another
to understand how the recon-
struction can happen from an ar-
chitectural standpoint.
There is also an issue with
funding, which the borough must
approve.
I hope the public votes to con-
tinue funding this project, Stone
said. It is up to them to decide
how we will move further, but the
bottom line is we need more fund-
ing before anything can happen.

With the start of another
school year, its useful to know
how much reliable information
students and parents can find to
do homework from a home Inter-
net connection through services
offered by the Camden County Li-
brary System.
This year, the library is again
providing library cardholders
free access on its website to the
services of www.tutor.com. Stu-
dents and adult learners can get
one-on-one online tutoring to help
with their homework questions at
www.camdencountylibrary.org/t
utor.
Also Kids Zone is a special sec-
tion on the librarys website that
includes homework help in a va-
riety of forms for younger stu-
dents. Go to the librarys home
page at www.camdencountyli-
brary.org/ and click on Using the
Library at the top where visitors
will find the Kids Zone menu that
includes a link to the Homework
Help page.
The Homework Page has a va-
riety of websites that are great
sources of information for stu-
dents and parents. The page also
offers a link to Ask a Librarian
service by email, telephone or on-
site at one of the librarys eight
branches.
Searchasaurus is one of the re-
sources available on the home-
work help page that enables stu-
dents and their parents to search
thousands of articles. It has an
online general encyclopedia and
an animal encyclopedia that of-
fers a lot of information about an-
imals from around the world.
According to EBSCOhost, the
online publisher of
Searchasaurus, it is an animated
interface with a dinosaur theme
that encourages young re-
searchers to develop their basic
search skills. The Homework
Help page also offers Primary
Search, a database geared to find-
ing age-appropriate magazine ar-
ticles for children.
Some of the sources on Kids
Zone like Searchasaurus require
a barcode number found on the
back of any valid library card,
but many of the online sources do
not require a card and are acces-
sible from any Internet connec-
tion at www.camdencountyli-
brary.org/homework-help.
The Teen Space is a special sec-
tion on the librarys website that
offers, among other features,
homework help from a variety of
resources that are organized by
different subjects, including near-
ly every high school subject from
poetry to geography to math.
The Teen Space can be reached
from the Camden County Library
homepage at www.camden-
countylibrary.org Again, visitors
should go to Using the Library
where theyll see a link to the
Teen Space that offers a Home-
work Help section which in turn
provides websites on a variety of
high school subjects. Resources
marked as Subscription Data-
base require a library card while
others are accessible to anyone on
the Internet.
Another useful tool on the site
are Subject Guides or PathFinder
links that clue visitors into all the
resources about a given subject
that are available at the library
through books, articles and even
related websites.
Teen students can also use the
Ask-a-Librarian service by email,
telephone, online or onsite at one
of our eight branches. Ask-a-Li-
brarian can be reached from the
library home page at www.cam-
dencountylibrary.org under
Using the Library and the Ref-
erence Center.
Students who take the time to
explore Kids Zone and Teen
Space now will be able to find
homework help when they need it
during the school year.

The Camden County Library
System has been selected as one
of six in the state to offer the Next
Chapter Book Club for adults and
teens with special needs.
Now Camden County resi-
dents with special needs will have
a book club to call their own,
said Freeholder Ed McDonnell, li-
aison to the Camden County Divi-
sion of Programming for People
with Disabilities. We are proud
that the Camden County Library
System was recognized to provide
this important service to our resi-
dents.
Next Chapter Book Clubs allow
those with intellectual or develop-
ment disabilities the chance to be-
come members of a book club de-
signed to meet their needs, re-
gardless of reading ability. Each
club will offer up to eight individ-
uals the opportunity to gather
weekly to read and learn together
as they discuss books and make
friends in a relaxed, community
setting.
Based on its expertise of hav-
ing run two Next Chapter clubs
since 2008, Scotch Plains Public
Library sought funding from Li-
braryLinkNJ, the New Jersey Li-
brary Cooperative, to support
groups at other libraries and ex-
pand the concept to special-needs
populations across the state. Li-
braryLinkNJ accepted the pro-
posal and is funding six other
clubs, including ones at the
Voorhees branch library and the
Cherry Hill Public Library in
South Jersey. The program pro-
vides training for library staff
members who will work with
local volunteers.
The Camden County Library
System is always seeking ways it
can serve the entire region, said
Camden County Library Director
Linda Devlin. Weve long offered
on-the-spectrum programming
for those with autism at some of
our branches, and now we wel-
come the chance to provide Next
Chapter Book Clubs for another
special-needs population.
The Next Chapter Book Club
will meet at the M. Allen Volgen-
son Regional Branch of the Cam-
den County Library System, lo-
cated at 203 Laurel Road in
Voorhees Township. The group is
scheduled to begin in September
with the first meetings on Thurs-
days Sept. 18 and 25 at 7 p.m.
Registration is required and
encouraged as space will be limit-
ed. Contact Rosemary Scalese at
(856) 772-1636, ext. 7350, or at
rscalese@camdencountylibrary.o
