Introduction
One of the most important decisions made in life by a
student is choosing a profession. There are many things that
need to be pondered; it includes personal interest, self-
concept, values, and global demands. Some external factors are
need to be consider like the schools, community or the place
where he/she lives, and also the influence from parents and
friends.
Some choice of the student is restricted, since usually,
they are only familiar with the few of the hundreds occupation
in this modern world. In the society today, skilled workers are
paid higher than the white collared jobs in the society. In
consequence, an occupational choice is often made on a
constricted and unconscious basis rather than on a established
consideration of all relevant facts which are necessary for a
truly free and satisfying choice of occupation and the choice of
a career for a student is now being manipulated by different
outside factors rather than his/her own personal decision.
Career preferences is a decision making in a confusing
situation which occurs during senior year of high school level
and even those students who is disoriented in his course, he/she
have been taken that will result in decreasing eagerness on that
particular field. Some students decide to transfer in another
2

school or to shift another course that really fits on his/her
own interest.
Choosing a career isn't easy however, but with an
understanding of your work-related desires and skills, you can
make a career choice that's as close to your dream job as it's
possible to get.
The college of education is a 4-year course offered by
University of Nueva Caceres. The courses offered in the college
of education are Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) and
Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSE). Bachelor of Elementary
Education offered major in Special Education, Pre-School
Education, Bachelor of Library and Information Science, Teacher
Certificate Program for Special Education, Pre-School Education,
Values Education, MAPEH, English, Mathematics, Social Studies.
Bachelor of Secondary Education English, Filipino, Mathematics,
Physical Science, Biological Science, Social Studies.
Education profession is not easily recognized. This is the
noblest profession. Teachers are dedicated to the well-being of
the student and communities they serve, taking into account
their cultural diversity, group aspiration, and what is valued
in education. The influence of the teacher on the student and on
other people with whom they work and live depends a great deal
on the philosophy as a person and as a teacher.
3

As a profession, education is in need of major
transformation. Some of the transformation is in employment
conditions, including pay rates and greater opportunities for
working. Other parts of the transformation need to be in every
nature of the jobcreating a richer working environment (teacher
safety, student engagement, school physical environments,
greater professional responsibility, and more holistic
relationships with learners, more complex and rewarding
relationships with communities).
Education students with different demographic
characteristics need to think about which ones matter most to
them and tailor their investigation accordingly. Such
demographic characteristics may include age, gender, ethnicity,
citizenship, socioeconomic status, marital status, and
enrollment status. Regardless of their backgrounds, all students
should initially make a list of variables that factor into
selecting a graduate school, and then decide how important each
variable is to them (Olson and King, 1995).
The aim of this study is, to know how the students choose
their course. Do they have basis? Did they consider the demand
of the profession, the roles and the functions, the profession
itself?

4

Theoretical Framework
The giving of meaning to a stimulus received by the sense
organ is called perception. It is the ability to see, hear or
become aware of something through the senses.
A group of theorist, the Empiricist someone who believes
that ideas should be based on our real experience or scientific
experiment rather than on theory and said that learning of more
important than innate characteristics in the development of
perception.
Culture and society influence our perception, both directly
and indirectly because culture and society influence our
personal needs and motives. Directly because social customs and
cultural, determine largely how we perceive certain objects and
events.
8

Gestalt theory maintains that perception is a unified
experience which cannot be understood by breaking it down into
parts. Gestalt psychologist stipulates that perceptions are the
products of complex interactions among various stimuli.
Suggestion can strongly influence perception. There are
suggestions that one can give to oneself and suggestions that
are given by others. Suggestion can be preconceived ideas that
can alter the interpretation of sense impressions.
According to Bunlor explanations on Perception, human being
try to make accurate judgments of other people, but this is very
difficult because of obstacles in perception.
The first of these obstacles is the fact that people are
perceive beyond their physical characteristics. We tend to
understand people from a psychological point of view. When we
perceive people, we try to combine stimulations received from
the environment with preciously established ideas already stored
in the brain. The viewer tries to be creative in this perception
becomes erroneous.
Another obstacle in the perception of people is the first
fact that the qualities being perceived change as the perceivers
move about in space. To obtain object constancy, the perceivers
must make many generalizations based on different perceptual
9

experiences. The problem in our perception of people increase
because the individual perceiver does not only more about the
also becomes emotional, changes physically and acquires new
ideas and interest in himself.

Chapter II
Review of related Literature
This chapter is a review of available literature and studies
from foreign to local which may directly or indirectly bearing
to study at hand. Relevance to present studies.

Related Literature
Relationships between parenting and children's school readiness
were examined within socioeconomically comparable samples of
African American and Euro-American kindergarten children,
mothers, and teachers. The moderating role of family income and
ethnicity for the relationships between parenting behaviors,
parental expectations, and school involvement and children's
early school performance were also examined. (PsycINFO Database

According to Howard and Ill, stressed out that whenever students
are in their high school experience, they are the center of
learning. In a traditional high school the center of the system
is the content or subject-centered high school to student
centered high school learning interests and aptitudes around
career paths. It provides a structure for students to reference
their learning and comment each year of their high school
17

experience. It allows students to plan and practice their skills
while creating a smooth successful transition. According to John
Holland, individuals are attracted to a given career by their
particular personalities and numerous variables that constitute
their backgrounds. First of all, career choice is an expression
of, or an extension of personality into the world of work
followed by subsequent identification with specific occupational
stereotypes. Accordingly, one chooses a career to satisfy
preferred modal personal orientation. Modal orientation is a
developmental process established through heredity and the
individuals life history of reacting to environmental demands.
If the individual has developed a strong dominant orientation,
satisfaction is probable in a corresponding occupational
environment. If, however the orientation is one of indecision
the livelihood of satisfaction diminishes.
(Bataller 2010) Career planning is life goal setting without
such a plan; it is like making a journey to an unfamiliar
destination without map. A Career Planning Guide that will help
the students choosing their appropriate course from planning a
career, steps in goal setting and self-understanding. It reveals
that guidance and counseling is intervention of underemployment
individuals and career preparedness must be initiated.
18

Zastrow (2007) identified competencies as being essential for
successfully performing the responsibilities of entry-level.
The term competence is particularly a useful description for
professional practice, because it does not only include the
expertise to perform a function but also suggests competence
include skill and knowledge, art and science, as well as talent
and information, but he or she must be able to use the knowledge
to effectively assist clients in changing by bringing about
change in the functioning of some part of the environment. As a
profession with a mission to facilitate change in both people
and environment, a wide range of competence is required.
Many writers tried to explain why Filipino students prefer white
collar or degree courses. One reason why are young people today
simply drift into jobs without even having made explicit choices
between alternative occupations is that they do not have
sufficient information about the range of alternative
opportunities to make deliberate rational choices in their
careers preference of Filipinos, white-collar jobs and dislike
for blue-collar jobs can be traced to the irrelevance of the
type of education given.
According to ( Corpuz, 2007) although the professionalization
law can help promote professionalism, professionalism is, in the
19

ultimate analysis, the choice, the decision, and the action of
every professional teacher.
Study of Wilburn and Smith (2005) revealed that loe self-esteem
and stress were significantly related to suicidal ideation in
college students. How recently a student experienced a stressful
event also proved to be asignificant factor; students who had
recently experienced a stressful event reported signifcantly
lower self-esteem than did students who had experienced a
stressful event in a few months before the study. In a
longitudal study, it found that students with higher self-esteem
weere better adjusted to college that were students with lower
self-esteem afetr a year follow-up.( hayman,et al,2007)
According to "Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance,
14th Edition," a career may be thought of as a path. In this
case, a series of jobs can make up the path leading to a
position that you love. Due to personal growth or trends in the
economy, you may change paths during your employment years. When
you try to choose a career after graduation, however, self-
assessment helps you decide which paths hold the strongest
appeal <http://www.ehow.com/how_6073260_choose-career-after-
