7) Partitioning the hard drive:
a. This opens Ubuntus program to partition the hard drive. There is a very large potential
to break something in this screen; so dont mess around with it too much.
b. You should see drives named something like sda1(fat16), sda2(something), sda3(ntfs),
sda4(ntfs). These are youre drives; the 2 larger ones, very likely the (ntfs) drives, are
more familiarly called (C:) and (D:). Dont change the 2 smaller drives.
c. You are only able to have 4 primary drives at a time; so we need to delete either the (C:)
drive or the (D:) drive. (C:) holds the Windows operating system, so we want to delete
(D:).
d. Go to Windows. Its a good idea to back up everything on your (D:) drive either on a
flash drive or by copying it over to the (C:) drive. The Desktop folder is a bit of an
exception. For the Desktop Folder,
i. Create a folder in (C:) named Desktop.
ii. Right click the Desktop folder in (D:).
iii. Hit Properties
iv. Go to the tab Location
v. Click Move
vi. Move to newly created Desktop Folder in (C:)
e. When the (D:) drive is completely empty and everything is backed up somewhere:
i. Hit Control Panel from the start menu.
ii. Click System and Security.
iii. Click Administrative Tools.
iv. Double Click Computer Management
v. On the menu towards the left, click Disk Management.
1. Again, there is a very high potential to break something here.
vi. Right Click your (D:) drive.
1. Double check to make sure you properly backed up all your files.
vii. Click Delete Volume.
f. Go back to Ubuntu (repeat steps 5 and 6).
g. You should now see that one of the larger sda drives was deleted, and you now have a
very large amount of free space.
h. Click the remaining larger drive, this is your (C:). Click Change. You can make this as
large as you want.
i. When choosing how large to make your (C:), keep in mind that you need to
leave enough room for Ubuntu and an additional 8 GB drive.
i. With the remaining free space, we make another partition.
i. Click the + button.
ii. Where it says Type for the new Partition, choose Logical
iii. For the size, take up most of the remaining space, leaving ~8 GB.
iv. For location of the new partition, choose Beginning.
1. Make sure you do h before you do i.
v. Use as: Ext 4 journaling file system.
vi. For mount point, select /
vii. Click OK and Continue.
j. With the remaining 8 GB, create another new partition.
i. Click the + button.
ii. For the type, choose Primary
iii. Use the remaining space.
iv. For the location, choose Beginning
v. Use as: swap point.
vi. Click OK and add.
k. Click the Ext 4 drive and check the Format box.
