PRESERVATION PROCEDURE

Caterpillar Gas Engine:
1. Clean the engine of any dirt, rust, grease and oil. Inspect the exterior, and painted areas that
have paint damage. Repair as required.

2. Remove any dirt from the air cleaners. Check all seals, gaskets and the filter elements for
damage.

3. Apply lubricant to all points shown in the Caterpillar Lubrication & Maintenance Manual chart
for this engine.

4. Drain the crankcase oil after the Shop load test. Then change the oil filters. Refer to the Cat
Operation and Maintenance Manual for the proper procedure.

5. Add VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) oil to the crankcase at the rate of 3% to 4% by volume.

6. Remove the air filter elements. Turn the engine at cranking speed with the throttle control in the
FUEL OFF position. Use a sprayer to add a mixture of 50% VCI oil and 50% engine oil into
the turbocharger inlets.

NOTE: The mixture of VCI oil can also be added to the inlet by removing the plug for
checking turbocharger boost pressure. The minimum application rate is 5.5 ml per
liter (3oz. per 1000 cubic inch) of engine displacement.

7. Use a sprayer to apply a 50% VCI oil and 50% engine oil mixture into the exhaust opening.
Minimum application rate is 5.5ml per liter (3 oz per 1000 cubic inches) of engine displacement.
Seal the exhaust spool pipe opening at the enclosure roof penetration.

8. Remove the spark plugs. Apply 30 mL (1 oz) of a mixture of VCI oil (50 percent engine oil
(50 percent engine oil) in the cylinder. Use a bar or turning tool to rotate the engine slowly. This
slow rotation will put the mixture of oil on the cylinder walls. Re-Install all spark plugs
and tighten to the correct torque.

9. Spray a thin amount of VCI oil mixture (50% VCI oil and 50% engine oil) on the flywheel, ring
gear teeth, and starter pinion. Install the covers to keep in the VCI vapors in the engine.

10. Apply a heavy amount of (Cat - P/N1P-0808 Multi-Purpose Grease) to all outside parts that
move, such as rod threads, ball joints, linkage, etc.

NOTE:
Re-install the air filter elements and completely enclose the elements with heavy grade black
plastic bags sealed with waterproof, weather resistant tape. Replace the air filter covers. Place
tape over all openings in order to seal the VCI vapors. Do not use duct tape.

Install all covers and make sure that tape has been installed over all openings, air inlet, exhaust
openings, the flywheel housing, the crankcase breathers, dipstick tubes, etc. Ensure that all
covers are air tight and weatherproof. Use a waterproof weather resistant type tape (Kendall
No. 231 or equal). Do not use duct tape, it will only seal for a short time.

11. Loosen the GTI radiator fan belts. Tag accordingly.

12. Attach a tag to the engine with notation of the date and type of preservative that the engine
was preserved with. Attach a tag with a stainless steel wire or strap in a clearly visible place.

13. During storage, every two or three months, check the engine for corrosion. If the engine has
signs of corrosion at the check period, repeat the applicable steps 1 through 9.

Cooling Water System:
1. First clean the GTI radiator of any dirt, rust, grease, and oil. Inspect the exterior, and all painted
areas that have paint damage. Repair as required.

2. This unit was tested with 50 / 50 PREMIX coolant to coat the internals of the cooling system
components (engine, radiator & piping), the entire cooling system will ship dry.

Caterpillar Generator:
1. First clean the generator of any dirt, rust, grease, and oil. Inspect the exterior, and painted
areas that have paint damage. Repair as required.

2. Perform a resistance check of the windings, and record the readings. Refer to the Caterpillar
Generator Operations & Maintenance Manual for the procedure. The purpose of this is to
provide a base line to determine if moisture or winding deterioration occurs during storage.
This should be performed every 12 months while in storage.

3. Install desiccant bags in the terminal box. Install all terminal box covers and make sure that
tape has been installed over all openings, air intake and air discharge openings. Make sure all
covers are air tight and weatherproof. Use a waterproof, weather resistant type tape (Kendall
No. 231 or equal). Do not use duct tape, it will only seal for a short time.

4. Attach a tag to the generator and terminal boxes with notation of the date and type of preservative
that the generator was preserved with. Attach the tag with a stainless steel wire or strap in a
clearly visible place.

5. There are no requirements for the rotor shaft bearings.

Packaged Unit (Less the Gas Engine):
1. First clean the unit of any dirt, rust, grease, and oil. Inspect the exterior, and painted areas that
have paint damage and repair.

2. Apply preservative corrosion inhibitor (Cat - P/N1P-0808 Multi-Purpose Grease) to all unpainted
machined bare metal surfaces.

3. Remove the jumper cable between the two control batteries. Ty-Wrap the jumper cable to the
battery cable harness for shipping.

4. All electrical terminal boxes must be packed with desiccant bags or VCI emitters. Tightly secure
each enclosure side door inside and outside door latching mechanisms for proper gasket sealing
to the door frame. Attach a tag to all electrical boxes with notation of the date and type of
preservative that the unit was preserved with. Attach the tag with a stainless steel wire or strap in
a clearly visible place.

5. Install 1/4 (minimum) plywood covers on all exterior flange openings with flange gaskets.
Secure the plywood and gaskets to the flange with a minimum of four (4) flange bolts and nuts.
Be sure to apply (Cat - P/N 5P-3931 Anti-seize lubricant) to all flange bolts or use non-corrosive
bolts and nuts.

6. Install all covers and make sure that tape has been installed over all openings, air intake,
exhaust openings, crankcase breather, dipstick tubes, etc. Make sure all covers are air tight
and weatherproof. Use a waterproof, weather resistant type tape (Kendall No. 231 or equal).
Do not use duct tape, it will onl y seal for a short ti me.

NOTE: Batteries are shipped wet.

DE-PRESERVATION PROCEDURE

Before Start Up:
1. Remove all outside protective coverings and tape from all items.

2. Inspect the condition and operate all drain valves. Repair or replace as necessary.

3. Replace both engine air filters with Caterpillar elements.

4. Fill the crankcase with oil and change the Caterpillar oil filters. Refer to the Operation and
Maintenance Manual for the proper procedure.

5. Check the condition of the radiator fan blades; rotate the fan to check the clearance all around
the radiator shroud. Tighten the fan belts. Check the radiator fan and idler pillow block bearings
for the proper amount of grease. Inspect the radiator core for damage and replace if necessary.

6. Reinstall the battery jumper cable between the two (2) control batteries.

7. Before starting the engine, remove the valve covers, and put a large amount of engine oil on
the camshaft, cam followers, and valve mechanism to prevent damage to the mechanism.

8. Use a pry bar to rotate the engine in the counter clock-wise direction to ensure that there are
no hydraulic locks or resistance.

9. Check the condition of all rubber and 316 S.S. flexible hoses. Replace as necessary.

10. Before start-up fill the cooling system with the proper mixture of approved water and ethylene
glycol. Refer to the Caterpillar Engine Operation and Maintenance Manual. Test the coolant
mixture for proper nitrite level. Adjust the coolant mixture as necessary.

11. Before start-up of the generator, use a megohmeter to check insulation resistance moisture
and / or foreign material. Refer to the Caterpillar Generator Operation and Maintenance
Manual for the procedure. A resistance reading of 1 megohm or less is an indication that the
winding has absorbed too much moisture.

12. On the first day of operation, check the entire engine several times for leaks and correct
operation.

Initial Operation:
The quality of oil control components used in Caterpillar engines is such that, following engine
storage, only an operational check at initial start is necessary before operation. The purpose of
this operational check is to be sure that the correct pressures and temperatures are kept in the
lubrication, cooling and fuel systems, and any leaks are corrected.

To be sure of a safe, uniform check at initial start, use the following procedure:
1. Turn the engine at cranking speed with the throttle in the fuel OFF position until engine oil
pressure is present.

2. Operate the engine for 10 minutes at low idle speed.

3. Operate the engine for 15 minutes at half-load and 3/4 rated speed.

4. Operate the engine for 30 minutes at rated load and speed.

5. Check for leaks such as oil, coolant, and fuel frequently during the first few hours of operation.
Repair any leaks as soon as they are detected.

Packaged Unit (less the Gas Engine):
1. Remove all outside protective coverings and all desiccants from the Caterpillar generator
terminal box.

2. Check all generator bus bars and separate lead lugs for tightness. Check all generator
mounted junction box wire lugs for tightness. Hookup the generator space heater
immediately. Meggar the Caterpillar generator.

3. Remove all desiccants from electrical junction boxes and control panels. Check all terminal
blocks and wire lugs for tightness.

4. Operate all ball valves handles for proper operation.

5. Check the enclosure lighting fixtures for proper operation and lamps for breakage.

6. Check air intake and discharge louvers for any damage or obstructions.
