English 11 Calendar 2014-2015 (Semester 1)

This calendar lays out the whole schedule for the entire year. All homework and in class quizzes
or tests are listed. Any homework listed will be due the next day noted on this calendar. It is
expected that you follow this schedule. There is no excuse for any late or missing assignments!
(Note: there is a separate calendar to follow for Mondays)

Quarter 1
Tuesday, Aug. 19 - Introduction to Unit 1. In-class notes over the Unit Introduction pg. 2-13.
HW: Read the three origin myths "The Earth on Turtle's Back," "When Grizzlies Walked
Upright," and "The Navajo Origin Legend" pg. 20-28. Answer questions 1-4 & 6-7 on pg.
29.
Thursday, Aug. 21 - Quiz over three origin myths. Discussion, notes, and activities covering the
three origin myths; specific discussion or connection between place and literature and how
different cultures interact.
HW: Read biography of William Bradford and "Of Plymouth Plantation" pg. 57-65. Answer
questions 1-4 on pg. 65.

Tuesday, Aug. 26 - Quiz over "Of Plymouth Plantation." Discussion, notes, and activities
covering "Of Plymouth Plantation;" specific discussion of perseverance in the face of harsh
circumstance.
HW: Read biography of Anne Bradstreet and "To My Dear and Loving Husband" pg. 75-
76. Answer questions 1-4 on pg. 77.
Thursday, Aug. 28 - Quiz over "To My Dear and Loving Husband." Discussion, notes, and
activities covering "To My Dear and Loving Husband;" specific discussion over the inclusion of
private feelings in Puritan America. Read "The Tenth Muse" pg. 78 and discuss. Introduce Unit
1 paper/project assignment.
HW: Read biography of Edward Taylor and "Huswifery" pg. 81-82. Answer questions 1-2
on pg. 82 and question 3 on pg. 83.

Tuesday, Sep. 2 - Quiz over "Huswifery." Discussion, notes, and activities covering "Huswifery;"
specific discussion over hard work as an American ideal. Begin reading "Sinners in the Hands of
an Angry God."
HW: Finish reading "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" pg. 87-91. Answer questions
1-3 on pg. 91.
Thursday, Sep. 4 - Quiz over "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Discussion, notes, and
activities covering "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God;" specific discussion over fear,
persuasion, and religion.
HW: Read "The Declaration of Independence" and "The American Crisis, Number 1" pg.
112-119. Answer questions 1-3 on pg. 115 and questions 1-2 on pg. 119.



Tuesday, Sep. 9 - Quiz over "The Declaration of Independence" and "The American Crisis,
Number 1." Discussion, notes, and activities covering both declarations; specific discussion over
values and persuasion.
HW: Read biography of Benjamin Franklin and "Franklin's Firsts" on pg. 136-138 and
"Poor Richard's Almanack" on pg. 148-150.
Thursday, Sep. 11 - Quiz over Benjamin Franklin and his Proverbs. Discussion, notes, and
activities over Benjamin Franklin; specific discussion of proverbs and how they teach values.
HW: Read "The Autobiography" pg. 140-146. Answer questions 1-4 on pg. 152.

Tuesday, Sep. 16 - Quiz over "The Autobiography." Discussion, notes, and activities over "The
Autobiography;" specific discussion over autobiographical lessons.

Tuesday, Sep. 23 - Unit 1 paper/project due at the beginning of class. Introduction to Unit 2. In-

Thursday, Sep. 25 - Quiz over "The Devil and Tom Walker" first half. Discussion, notes, and
activities over the first half of "The Devil and Tom Walker;" specific discussion over greed and
selfishness.
HW: Read "The Devil and Tom Walker" pg. 235-239. Answer questions 1-5 on pg. 239.

Tuesday, Sep. 30 - Quiz over "The Devil and Tom Walker" second half. Discussion, notes, and
activities over the conclusion of "The Devil and Tom Walker;" specific discussion over greed,
morals, and learning about historical periods through literature.

Tuesday, Oct. 14 - Quiz over first half of "The Fall of the House of Usher." Discussion, notes,
and activities over the first half of "The Fall of the House of Usher;" specific discussion over
gothic literature and fantasy.
HW: Read "The Fall of the House of Usher" pg. 304-310. Answer questions 1-5 on pg. 310.
Thursday, Oct. 16 - Quiz over the second half of "The Fall of the House of Usher." Continuation

HW: Read "Literary History: Transcendentalism" pg. 360-361, the biography of Ralph
Waldo Emerson pg. 365, and "Nature" pg. 366-368. Answer questions 1-3 on pg. 368.

Tuesday, Oct. 21 - Quiz over Transcendentalism and "Nature." Discussion, notes, and activities

nature.

HW: Read the biography of Emily Dickinson pg. 404-405 and her poems "Because I Could
Not Stop for Death," "I Heard a Fly Buzz- When I Died," "The Brain- is Wider than the
Sky," "There is a Solitude of Space," and "Water, is Taught by Thirst" pg. 408-417.
Thursday, Oct. 30 - Quiz over Emily Dickinson's poems. Discussion, notes, and activities over
Emily Dickinson's poems; specific discussion of the female voice, soul and society, and poetic
devices.
HW: Read the biography of Walt Whitman pg. 422-423 and his poems "Songs of Myself,"

Tuesday, Dec. 9 - Quiz over Dunbar and Robinson's poems. Discussion, notes, and activities
over the four turn-of-the-century poems; specific discussion over the African American struggle
and the emergence of the American small-town.
HW: Study for the Unit Test.
Thursday, Dec. 11 - Unit 3 Test. Unit 3 paper/project due at the beginning of class on Friday,
Dec. 12.

The last week before Winter Vacation (Dec. 15-19) will be dedicated solely to the preparation
and administration of the semester final exam.
