NOTICE
EIA Engineering Standards and Publications are designed to serve the public
interest through eliminating misunderstandings between manufacturers and
purchasers, facilitating interchangeability and improvement of products, and
assisting the purchaser in selecting and obtaining with minimum delay the
proper product for his particular need. Existence of such Standards and Pub-
lications shall not in any respect preclude any member or non-member of EIA
from manufacturing or selling products not conforming to such Standards and
Publications, nor shall the existence of such Standards and Publications preclude
their voluntary use by those other than EIA members, whether the standard is
to be used either domestically or internationally.
Recommended Standards and Publications are adopted by EIA without regard to
whether or not their adoption may involve patents on articles, materials. or
processes. By such action, EIA does not assume any liability to any patent owner,
nor does it assume any obligation whatever to parties adopting the Recom-
mended Standard or Publication.
This EIA Recommended Standard is considered to have international stan-
dardization implications, but the IEC activity has not progressed to the
point where a valid comparison between the EM Recommended Standard and
the IEC Reconrmendation can be made.

NUMBERING OF LIKE-NAMBD TERMINAL FUNCTIONS
IN SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES
AND
DESIGNATION OF UNITS IN MULTIPLE-UNIT
SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES
(From Standards Proposal No. 1916, formulated under the cognizance of JEDEC
Committee JC-10 on Terms and Definitions.)
1. Scope
This Standard gives the system for numbering like-named electrodes or
terminal functions in semiconductor devices and for assigning numerical
designations to unite of multiple-unit semiconductor devices. It applies to
both integrated circuits and discrete devices.
The examples are intended only to identify terminal functions and not to
indicate any preferred function for the specific terminals. In the case of
integrated circuits, it is not the intent of this Standard to specify the
alphabetical characters or signal names associated with particular functions.
2. Requirements
The numbering of electrodes, terminal functions, or designation of units
shall be derived from the terminal numbering for the device package as
specified in the latest revision of EIA-308, "Preparation of Outline Drawings
of Solid State Products for JEDEC Type Registration."
Following connno" practice, the terminal numbering show" for discrete devices
is as see" in bottom views of the devices, whereas the terminal numbering
show" for integrated circuits is as seen in top views of the devices. For
explanation of the symbols in parentheses, see Clause 3.
In single-unit semiconductor devices having more than one electrode of the
same type or like-named terminal functions, (see examples 1, 2, and 3), the
first of the similar functions, that is, the o"e connected to the lowest-
numbered terminal, shall be assigned the number 1. Successively higher
numbers shall be assigned to the remaining similar functions according to the
sequence in which connections are made to successively higher-numbered
terminals.
If similarly named electrodes or terminal functions are functionally
different, appropriate numbering independent of terminal numbers shall he
used. For example, JEDEC registration documents specify that the two emitters
of a Darlington-connected transistor are to be designated 1 and 2 for the
input and output transistors, respectively. Another example is a" integrated
circuit having select lines with binary weighting.

In multiple-unit semiconductor devices in which the units are similar (see
examples 4 end 5), the unit having an electrode or terminal function
connected internally to the lowest-numbered terminal shall be designated unit
number one. The unit having sn electrode or terminal function connected
internally to the lowest-numbered terminal not connected to unit number one
shall be designated unit number two. Likewise, successively higher numbers
shall be assigned to additional units according to the sequence in which
connections sra made to successively higher-numbered terminals.

When similar units have one or more common connections to s terminal (see
example 6), the assignment of unit numbers shall be determined by the
previous rule, ignoring the common connections.

Particularly in the case of an integrated circuit, it is sometimes necessary
to decide whether s device should be considered as semi-independent units
with common connections (e.g., two flip-flops with a common clock), or as a
single unit with multiple sections (see example 7).

In integrated circuits having several independent parts (see example 81, the
independent parts may be numbered sequentially even if the independent parts
are not similar units. This is particularly useful if some of the terminal
functions are nominally the same.

terminal functions or the flip-flops themselves.

3. Recommendations
In semiconductor devices having more than one terminal of the same function,
the terminal symbol (name) may be modified by adding a suffix number to the
symbol or name, e.g., El, E2, etc. The suffix should be added on the came
line as the symbol or name, not as B subscript.
In multiple-unit semiconductor devices, the terminal symbol or name may be
modified by adding a prefix number to the symbol or name, e.g., lA, 2A, etc.
The prefix should be added on the same line as the symbol or name.
The foregoing recommendations may be applied in combination, as shown in
examples 9 and 10.

If there is no strong precedent for using a particular symbol for e
particular terminal function and the device has several terminals with that
function, it may be advantageous to use consecutive letters of the alphabet
instead of a single symbol with suffix number. Example 11 shows a quadruple
AND gate done both ways.
