CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY
FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL AND INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

HEAT TRANSFER I
(MECH 352/2 Sec. T, FALL 2006)

Instructor: Dr. W.S. Ghaly, Room EV 4-151, Tel.: 848-2424x4191, Fax: 3175
e-mail: ghaly@encs.concordia.ca

Office Hours: Wednesdays 4 PM to 6 PM, or by appointment

Lecture T: Wednesdays and Fridays 10:15 to 11:30 AM in H 507
Tutorial TA&TB: Wednesdays 8:45 to 9:35 AM in CL 215&245
Laboratory: every other week in the sub-basement H 0027-3, starting Sept. 18, week 2

Prerequisites: EMAT 311 or MECH 333

Course Description:

Analytical and numerical methods for steady-state and transient heat conduction. Empirical and practical
relations for forced- and free-convection heat transfer. Radiation heat exchange between black bodies,
and between non-black bodies. Gas radiation. Solar radiation. Effect of radiation on temperature
measurement.

Course Aim:

This course is an introductory course to the subject of Heat Transfer. It introduces the student to the
elementary concepts and basic relations governing the different modes of heat transfer namely:
conduction, convection and radiation. The student may elect to complement his knowledge of this topic
by taking MECH 452. After taking these two courses, the student should be able to tackle the different
engineering problems in Heat Transfer.

Grading Scheme:

Laboratory 15%
Assignments 15%
Midterm 20% (tentative date: Oct. 20, 2006)
Final Exam 50% (during final exams period)

The passing grade is 50% overall average and 50% in the Final Exam.

General notes:
Course Notes: Course notes will be available in the Concordia bookstore by Monday Sept. 11
th
.
Additional smaller packs may be added during the term and students will be periodically informed.
Assignments: A list including all the assignments and tutorial problems is included, an assignment
will be given almost every week in the lecture; it is imperative to solve the assignments although it
will not be collected nor corrected. The solutions will be made available to students in due time.
The assignments grade will be based on two quizzes that will be given in the tutorial:
Quiz I: Friday Oct. 6
th
, will tentatively cover HWKS #1-4
Quiz II: Friday Nov. 17
th
, will tentatively cover HWKS #5-8
Labs will start with week 2 on the week of Sept. 18
th
. A Lab. Manual will be available in the
bookstore on or before Sept. 18
th
. The students are urged to read carefully each experiment before
performing it in the lab. The students have to get the lab. Instructor's signature on their data sheet.
The lab. reports have to be handed-in at the following lab. (i.e. two weeks later), they will be
corrected and returned at the following lab. (in two more weeks). Repeating students are exempt
only from repeating the labs. provided that they have done and passed them before.
Absence: If you miss a lecture, make sure you get informed from a friend or colleague of the material
given in that lecture. If you miss a lab. for a valid reason, organize with the Lab. Instructor for a
make-up lab.
Grade review: Students wishing to review their final grade, for a valid reason, can do so in the
second week of the winter term. A sign-up sheet will be posted on my door during the first week of
the winter term for those who wish to review their grade.
