EXPERIMENT 1 NAME/TOPIC Man-made volcano TOPIC Chemical reactions LEARNING OBJECTIVE To understand the effect of chemical reactions KEY SCIENCE CONCEPTS/MAIN MESSAGES Chemical reactions MATERIALS Liquid dish soap, Baking soda,Food Colouring and Vinegar WHAT TO DO? 1.Prepare 1.5L mineral water bottle and the materials. 2.Pour two tablespoons of baking soda into the bottle. 3.Prepare a small bottle pour a bit of dish soap, vinegar and food colouring and mix it well. 4.Pour the contents of the small bottle into the bigger bottle WHAT HAPPENS When the dish soap, vinegar and food colouring is poured into the bottle, the contents react with the baking soda and lava-looking fluid flows out the bottle SCIENCE EXPLANATION The reaction between the baking soda, dish soap and vinegar happens fast and it forms a product at the end which includes a salt( Sodium Ethanoate,CH3COONa), carbon dioxide and water.
EXPERIMENT 2 NAME/TOPIC Magic of solutions TOPIC Chemical reactions LEARNING OBJECTIVE To understand the effect of chemical reactions KEY SCIENCE CONCEPTS/MAIN MESSAGES Chemical reactions MATERIALS Solutions of lead(II) nitrate, potassium iodide, test tube WHAT TO DO? 1.) Approximately 5cm^3 of potassium iodide is poured into a test tube. 2.) Approximately 5cm^3 of lead(II) nitrate is poured into another test tube. 3.) Pour both the solution into either one test tube. WHAT HAPPENS The mixture of both colourless solutions will turn yellow. SCIENCE EXPLANATION The reaction is known as displacement. The two metals are displaced from their salt solutions. The chemical equation for the reaction is Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + 2KI (aq) ---> PbI (s) + 2KNO3 (aq) Lead(II) iodide, PbI is a yellow insoluble salt while Potassium nitrate,KNO3 is a colourless solution.
EXPERIMENT 3 NAME/TOPIC Iodine clock reaction TOPIC Chemical reactions LEARNING OBJECTIVE To understand the effect of chemical reactions KEY SCIENCE CONCEPTS/MAIN MESSAGES Chemical reactions MATERIALS Potassium Iodide, Sodium Thiosulphate, Starch, Sulphuric Acid, Hydrogen peroxide,Distilled water WHAT TO DO? 1.First prepare solution A: put 7.47g of potassium iodide into a beaker, pour 75ml of 0.001M sodium thiosulphate into the same beaker and add 75ml of distilled water with stirring. 2.For solution B: pour 20ml of 1.0M sulphuric acid into a beaker, add 55ml of distilled water to dilute the acid and pour 25ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide. 3.Mix the solutions. 4.The solution are then added with starch solution. 5.The solution is again added with sodium thiosulpate solution WHAT HAPPENS When the two solutions are mixed, a yellow liquid is formed due to Iodine. When the solution is added with starch solution, it turns blue-black. When sodium thiosulphate is added to the solution, it reverses the whole iodine clock reaction. SCIENCE EXPLANATION H2O2 (aq) + 2H+ (aq) + 2I- (aq) ---> 2H2O (l) + I2 (aq) The iodine formed is yellow in colour but reacts with starch solution that turns blue-black solution. The sodium thiosulphate reverses the whole iodine clock reaction converting the iodine into iodide ions
EXPERIMENT 4
NAME/TOPIC Inflating Balloon TOPIC Chemical reactions LEARNING OBJECTIVE To understand the effect of chemical reactions KEY SCIENCE CONCEPTS/MAIN MESSAGES Chemical reactions MATERIALS Baking Soda, Vinegar, Mineral Water Bottle and Balloon WHAT TO DO? 1.Pour about two tablespoons of baking soda into the mineral water bottle. 2.Pour the same amount of vinegar into the bottle. 3.Cover the bottle with the balloon WHAT HAPPENS Watch the balloon inflate! SCIENCE EXPLANATION When the baking soda and vinegar react, it would produce carbon dioxide gas, water and salt which is sodium ethanoate. The following gas also inflates the balloon as shown in the experiment. The balloon sinks very fast to the ground because carbon dioxide is heavier than air.
