Health Education Syllabus 2014-2015

In this Health Education course scholars will explore the foundations of individual health prac-
tices as a part of an overall healthy life style and healthy community. We will practice various
skills to empower scholars to not only live a healthy life but make positive decisions in diffi-
cult situations. Scholars will work together to practice problem solving skills to address some
of the most pressing and relevant health issues they will face in everyday life. Scholars will
work individually as well as small groups creating skits and mini-projects to assess their
knowledge of the course and demonstrate their ability to apply this knowledge. By the end of
this course scholars will have the skills and techniques to not only take responsibility for their
own health through healthy practices, but to pass their knowledge on to their community as
well.

Course goals
- Scholars will be able to collect and analyze health data about their community.
- Scholars will be able to utilize data collected as a part of the problem solving
process.
- Scholars will be able to design and and implement their own personal wellness
programs.
- Scholars will be able to create short and long term health and wellness goals.
- Scholars will be able to take responsibility for their own health through positive
health promoting decisions.
- Scholars will be able to apply principals of problem solving to make positive
health/ life decisions

Course content and time schedule
- Quarter 1:
! Unit 1: Social emotional health and safety
! Unit 2: Sexual Health, HIV, STIs
- Quarter 2:
! Unit 3: Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs
! Unit 4: Nutrition, physical activity, and personal health and wellness

Calculation of Semester Grade:
Semester 1:
- Quarter One: 45%
- Quarter Two: 45%
- Semester Exam: 10%

Grading Scale:
At UYA HS, we will institute a progressive grading system in which there are no Ds or zeros.
The lowest grade a student can earn on a paper or assignment will be a 40% (minimum F).

Note: Weighted GPAs will be calculated with a .25 for honors classes and .50 for AP courses.

Grade Notification:
Grades will be updated weekly in powerschool. Scholars will also be notified of their progress
in the course via a take home progress report monthly. This report will have to be signed by a
guardian and returned.

Make up work:
Scholars can make-up quizzes and tests to earn back up to 50% of the points they missed. In
order to make-up quizzes and tests, a scholar must 1) set an appointment at Mr. Flemings of-
fice hours, 2) correct every problem that was not 100% correct on the original assessment on
a separate sheet of paper (with or without Mr. Fleming), and 3) meet with Mr. Fleming to re-
view each of the corrected problems within one week of the initial assessment.

Absences:
Scholars will not be permitted to make up assessments if they are missed due to an unexcused
absence. Scholars who miss an assessment due to an excused absence may retake it for full
credit. In order to retake a missed assessment, the scholar must set an appointment at
Mr.Flemings office hours and may take it during that time within one week of the missed as-
sessment.

Scholars are still responsible for homework regardless of their attendance in class. Scholars
should first attempt to contact fellow classmates to find out the assignment for that night. If
no classmates are available, the scholar should contact Mr.Fleming before 9pm.

Agenda Expectations/Responsibilities:
Scholars are required to write assignments in their agenda EVERYDAY.

Supplies:
3 binder (communal for all classes)
Binder dividers
Loose leaf paper
A supply of sharpened pencils
