INTRODUCTION
The 0overnment of India launched the Quality Improvement Proramme (QIP) in -/1. $ith an ob2ective of
upradin the e3pertise and capability of faculty members of the deree level enineerin institutions in the
country' The Proramme is bein implemented and monitored by AICTE, a statutory autonomous body of
the 0overnment of India' 4nder this scheme of QIP, only sponsored teachers are eliible for admission to
either 5asters or #octoral deree proramme, $ith the aim to imbibe in them the culture of research and
better teachin capability by e3posin them to the environment and trainin in premier institutions of
technical education'
The proramme $as launched to improve the overall 6uality of technical education in AICTE approved
institutions' The scheme anticipated that trainin the faculty members in some of the institutions $here the
facilities, infrastructure and the faculty are of the international standards, $ould provide them an
opportunity to et involved in an environment of sophisticated research and development activities' This
$ould eventually lead to buildin 6uality infrastructure and improve the standard of technical education in
their parent institution' The scheme $as further e3tended to other discipline as $ell, such as 5anaement,
Pharmacy, Architecture and To$n Plannin, 7otel 5anaement and Caterin Technoloy'
%o$ AICTE has e3tended the QIP scheme for polytechnic teachers for 5'E!5'Tech' and Ph'#' deree
prorammes in all the disciplines' The scheme has been named as QIP (Poly)' The aim of the scheme is to
strenthen the competency of the faculty of Polytechnics and to e3pose them to emerin areas of technical
