tershire Wildlife Trusts
Wild Nights series of
talks this September.
During a career at the
BBC spanning almost
three decades, Stephen
had the good fortune to
travel to all seven of the
worlds continents in
search of wildlife
He has seen killer
whales in Patagonia, el-
ephants in the Okavango
and visited the freezing
wastes of Antarctica and
the heat of African plains.
Yet my first love has
always been the nature
of Britain the title of a
series I made with Alan
Titchmarsh a few years
ago, said Stephen.

hosting an exhibition of
paintings and textile images
inspired by the Inner Hebri-
des, at Under the Edge Arts
next weekend.
Jacki, a retired nurse from
Dursley, has always enjoyed
sketching, and it was this
escape into drawing, paint-
ing and study that allowed
her respite from recurring
depression. She completed a
Visual Art Degree in 2003.
We are not always who we
appear to be on the surface,
and I am fascinated by layers
so I have experimented with
layers in paint and other ma-
terials, says Jacki.

I have visited the Inner
Hebrides often and created
a sketchbook of the visits.
I find the views breathtak-
ing and have attempted to
translate this wonder into an
interesting and emotive ex-
hibition. To capture the vast
expanse of sea and sky, with
the light reflecting from the
ocean, was one of the chal-
lenges.
I hope it gives a small
glimpse into the variety,
beauty and mystery of this
landscape.
The exhibition takes place
on September 6-7, from 10am
to 4pm, with all profits going
to Cotswold Care Hospice.

THE Big Top is coming to
Bristol next month with
Cameron Mackintoshs pro-
duction of the fun and thrill-
ing musical Barnum.
Brian Conley, who has
starred on stage and screen
and is best known as Doug
Digby in The Grimleys, plays
the larger than life character
of PT Barnum in this new
touring show which visits
the Bristol Hippodrome from
September 16 to 27.
Conley said he was thrilled
to have been offered the role
a year ago after Mackintoshs
re-imagining of the musical
was played to sell-out crowds
at the Chichester Festival.
He said: PT Barnum was a
huge icon in the US. He was
the first man to really under-
stand how advertising works
and how to bring people in.
It was really good to re-
search him and is nice to
know we are not making it
up as we go along.
The veteran Royal Variety
Show performer and star of
many of his own television
shows, Conley said playing
a showman was not in total
contrast to his own career.
There are some similari-
ties there, he said. I have
some lovely moments to in-
terject with the audience at
the beginning of the show
and thats nice to do.
But it is the death-defying
tricks and stunts which audi-
ences will be mesmerised by.
It is a spectacle, added
Conley, who co-stars with
Linzi Hateley. I do juggling
and walking about on stilts
but I am surrounded by
COTSWOLD Chorus is a
mixed-voice choral soci-
ety of all ages and they are
hoping that more singers
will come along in the new
term on September 8.
The choir provides a
friendly, supportive and
most of all fun environ-
ment at weekly practices.
The choir produces three
major concerts a year for
Christmas, spring, and
summer.
Rehearsals are in Durs-
ley Parish Centre (behind
the church) on Thursdays
from 7.30pm till 9.30pm.

THERE may still be three
months to go before Christ-
mas but tickets for a De-
cember concert in Chipping
Sodbury are already in great
demand.
The rush for tickets heralds
the second appearance in the
town this year of blues and
soul singer Chris Farlowe.
Famous for 60s hits such as
Out of Time and the iconic
Handbags and Gladrags,
Farlowe was one of the head-
line artists at this years Sod-
bury Jazz and Blues Festival
in June, and is returning for
another concert in December.
It was an amazing even-
ing, remembers co-organis-
er Stuart Hobday. Chris has
a superb voice and his years
of experience have given him
a commanding presence on
stage. The audience were on
their feet, dancing and sing-
ing along and, as they left, the
consistent comment was you
must get him back again.
Tickets for Chris Farlowe
went on sale three weeks ago
and a third have been sold al-
ready.
Chris Farlowe will be ap-
pearing with the Norman
Beaker Band at Chipping
Sodbury Town Hall on Thurs-

THE Underground Festival is back
at Gloucester Guildhall in Septem-
ber, and this year the choice of bands
is bigger and better than ever.
Acoustic, rock, R&B, indie and folk
are all covered by the bill which in-
cludes Raleigh Ritchie, Lonely the
Brave and Bristols own Ramona
Flowers, who supported Bastille on
tour last year.
The Ramona Flowers dont have
the archetypal Bristol sound (al-
though their electronics do bear the
such talent. It is not very of-
ten you get a company half
made up of dancers and ac-
tors and the other half cir-
cus performers. It brings
real energy and of course,
with Cameron, everything is
done to the highest level.
The company, made up of
24 actors and acrobats and
an 11-piece band, bring the
magic and colour of the cir-
cus to Bristol from Septem-
ber 16 to 27.
