OVERVIEW
Qatars vast oil and gas reserves allowed the country to
develop into a stable and fast-growing modern economy
with the worlds highest per capita GDP. From 2008 to 2012
during the global recession Qatars GDP grew by 12 per
cent, and the International Monetary Fund forecasts that
Qatar will have the highest real growth in the Middle East
until at least 2020.
In addition to continuing to develop the oil and gas sector,
the Qatari government is promoting economic diversifcation
to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030 of becoming one
of the most socially, economically and environmentally
advanced societies. Tese plans generate immense
opportunities in sectors such as infrastructure development
(including projects related to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and
the new Qatar rail networks and Doha metro), healthcare,
education, clean energy innovation as well as fnancial and
professional services.
Qatar is the UKs third largest export market in the
Middle East, and British companies and organisations are
in a strong position to do business with Qatar. Qatar has
strong cultural and historic ties to the UK; English is the
main business language and more than 20,000 British
expatriates live in Qatar.
In 2013, UK exports to Qatar reached 1.46 billion and
included machinery, foodstufs and luxury products. Qatar,
in turn, has approximately 22 billion in investments in
UK projects including Sainsburys, Barclays, London Stock
Exchange and the Shard. Further collaborations are underway
between the UK and Qatar Science & Technology Park.
