Monrovia-
A
t the newest Ebola Management Center set up by the
international medical humanitarian organization Doctors
Without Borders/Mdecins Sans Frontires (MSF), a
man lay on a plastic sheet protected mattress. His eyes
are red and his face is pale; he has no shirt on and he turns from side to
side, too weak to move and too sick to call for help with food or water.
One of the nurses in the other partition of the isolation center through
a doorway to where the man is laying orders that he be given water
mixed in Oral Rehydration Salt. The man is among some 120 patients
at the center who are probable, suspected and confrmed cases of
Ebola. He lies on the confrmed side.
Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the United States, Centers for Disease
Control is shown around the center and the smell of high concentration
of Chlorine flls the air as the team moves around to get a frsthand
view of what is happening.
One look at the patients brings despair and the only hope they have
is the mobile phones that those who are not too weak to speak are
allowed to use to communicate with their families in the outside
world. Some of them look as though they feel trapped by a disease
that offers no hope for tomorrow.
This is a diffcult situation for them. We allow them to use their
phones because they need to communicate with their families out
there. But this is the safest place for them to be-away from the
rest of the world where they pose no harm to others, MSFs Tim
Shenk, MSF Press offcer said in a conversation with journalists on
Wednesday at the center.
Rapidly Scaling up
Shenk says when the patients leave the isolation center, all their
belongings are no longer usable, so fre is set to them including cell
phones for fear they might be infected with the deadly Ebola virus.
He said the centers 120-bed capacity is already overwhelmed and the
MSF is putting up more structures to increase the capacity to be able
to take in more patients.
On the other side of the partition in what seems an open feld, health
workers dressed in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) hand out
food in disposable bowls to patients. A woman dressed in PPE holds
the hand of a young child about three-years-old. She has stripped off
his clothes because he was burning with fever and very sick.
The MSF center is the largest in the country at the moment but
the organization states that it is rapidly scaling up its operations to
increase the capacity of the area to meet the demands as more patients
continue to come in.
As the global response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa
continues to be chaotic and entirely inadequate. In its frst week,
MSFs newest Ebola management centerknown as ELWA3in
the capital, Monrovia, is already at capacity with 120 patients, and
a further expansion is underway, said the organization in a release
issued Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in the north of the country, patients continue to fow into
the newly rehabilitated Ebola management center in Foya.
MSF stated that international response to the West African Ebola
outbreak has been "chaotic and entirely inadequate". The group plans
to construct three additional tents with space for 40 more beds.
Doctors Without Borders' guidelines were written for Ebola treatment
centers with just 20 beds.
Numbers Unlike Anything Weve Seen
"We have to constantly adapt" to address a crisis of this scale, Lindis
Hurum, the group's emergency coordinator in Monrovia, said in a
statement. "The numbers of patients we are seeing is unlike anything
we've seen in previous outbreaks," Hurum said.
It stated that the new treatment center can slow the spread of the
outbreak by isolating patients, preventing them from infecting friends
and family. But added that overworked health workers have had to
reduce the level of care they provide, according to Doctors Without
Borders. They can no longer administer intravenous treatments,
for example, which could limit doctors' ability to help dehydrated
patients.
"It is simply unacceptable that, fve months after the declaration of
this Ebola outbreak, serious discussions are only starting now about
international leadership and coordination," said Brice de le Vingne,
director of operations at Doctors Without Borders. Referring to other
countries that have the potential to help, he says, "They can do more,
so why don't they?"
In Monrovia, "much of the city's medical system has shut down over
fears of the virus among staff members and patients, leaving many
people with no health care at all, generating an emergency within the
emergency."
On Wednesday at a news conference in Monrovia, Dr. Frieden said
that the disease is unprecedented and that the world needs to do more
to fght it.
The situation with Ebola in Liberia today, is dire. There is need for
urgent action. The world has never seen an outbreak of Ebola like
this, he said on Wednesday. Unfortunately, not only are the numbers
large, but we know that there are many more cases, than have been
diagnosed and reported. I wish, I didnt have to say this, but it is going
to get worse, before it gets better.
Some Survivors
Despite the despair caused by the deadly Ebola virus there are some
survivors coming out of isolation. On Monday, the ELWA Liberian
government run center release six persons from isolation including
two catholic nuns and a ten-year-old boy. Health workers at the center
have not lost hope in combating the disease and despite the death of
the second John F. Kennedy Medical Doctor Abraham Borbor.
Of the suspected cases that came, you have three of them coming
out, who have shown negative on a number of days- multiple days,
said Dr. I. B. Pabs-Garnon.
Now a word of caution, they have not contracted Ebola, but they
may still contract Ebola outside so, everybody must be careful. Wash
your hands, stay away from sick people, dead bodies. For now we say
thank God for their safe delivery.
Health worker Benedict E. E. Reeves told journalists that this week
has been a bright one as there continue to be positive signal for many
who came in with the disease.
Wade C. L. Williams, wade.williams@frontPageAfricaonline.com
Up to 60 were here but the number has reduced and so far we have
between 30 to 35. We are getting mostly negative results this week,
he said. We do the test three times because under three days you
cant show anything. You have to wait for three days then you do it.
We have done some peoples tests up to fve times.
Impact on travel
The deadly Ebola virus continues to affect the free movement
across borders that travelers getting to and from West Africa have
become more diffcult as airlines have canceled fights because of the
epidemic.
In Sierra Leones Kailahun district, there are four ambulances for a
region of 470,000 people. The World Health Organization states that
Ebola has infected more than 2,600 people and killed more than 1,400
in the four affected countries Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and
Nigeria.
A separate Ebola outbreak has been reported in the Democratic
Republic of Congo but appears unrelated.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) airlifted 168 tons of
health and hygiene supplies to Liberia in the past week. AmeriCares
sent a shipment of antibiotics, medical supplies and "desperately
needed safety equipment," including 15,000 pairs of gloves and
nearly 10,000 protective masks the group said.
MSFs Emergency Coordinator Lindis Hurum, states that there is no
more space at any of Treatment Units in Liberia for Ebola patients.
ETU at ELWA has stock-out of Loperimide, anti-malaria drug,
hoods, duct tape and cefxame, PPEs will also run out in 5 days, said
the MSF offcial.
According to the latest Ministry of Health numbers, in Montserrado
County1,126 out of 1,247 contacts (90%) were seen by the four tracing
teams. JFK, ELWA-2 and ELWA-3 are currently full to capacity and
the medical humanitarian group, MSF states that currently, there are
38 bodies that need to be removed from ELWA.
The West Point transit center was reopened and took in two cases
as of late afternoon on the August 25, 2014, Food and water were
delivered to them.
The tracing team has been working for the past three days to generate
line lists for contacts in West Point, stated MSF.
20,000 More Deaths Likely, WHO Says
So far, 129 contacts have been listed, and the contact tracing team
has identifed 32 deaths (occurring over the period from July 29th to
August 24th) that are suspected of being Ebola. The team is working
to complete investigation forms for these deaths. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention is reporting 1,378 probable, suspected
and confrmed Ebola cases as of August 28,2014. CDC states that
Liberia's Ebola death is now at 694 with 322 confrmed cases.
WHO is predicting that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa could
eventually infect more than 20,000 people - more than six times as
many as doctors currently know about. The organization made the
statement Thursday, as it called for a global response to the spread
of the virus.
The United Nations health agency warned that it needed $490 million
to combat Ebola over the next six months as it set out a "roadmap"
for tackling the outbreak. The death toll has climbed to 1, 552 and
"continues to accelerate, the agency said.
The Ebola crisis continues to claim the lives of many Liberians as the
days go by and those currently in isolation would need all the support
from the public to overcome a disease that has no cure.

A LESSON ISRAEL AND
HAMAS SHOULD REMEMBER
FrontPage
Commentary
COMMENTARY
T
he ongoing war between Israel and Hamas is
only reinforcing the notion that unlike previous
ceasefre agreements, preventing repeated violent
confrontations requires a fundamental change in
the status quo. Hamas demand for the complete lifting of
the blockade and Israels insistence on the demilitarization of
Gaza suggests that small incremental steps, including easing
the blockade by Israel and in return adhering to a ceasefre by
Hamas, will no longer suffce.
While Hamas is still committed to a self-styled religiously-
anchored doctrine that calls for Israels destruction, Israel is
convinced that Hamas is irredeemable. Ironically, neither side
wants to restore the status quo ante, yet they are holding on to
what appears to be irreconcilable positions which are at the
core of the confict.
Both sides are stuck and are looking for a way out; nevertheless,
neither is willing to make the far-reaching concessions
necessary to avoid future violent confrontations and their
destructive consequences.Israel can reoccupy Gaza and
eliminate many, if not all, of Hamas leadership, but it would
come at a prohibitive cost in blood and treasure. Israel will have
to administer and care for more than 1.8 million Palestinians,
risking the lives of tens of thousands of soldiers and instigating
an insurgency that would terrorize Israeli forces at every turn.
In the interim, new Hamas cells will mushroom and once Israel
withdraws its forces (as it cannot and does not want to maintain
the occupation indefnitely) and passes the reins to the UN or
any other international agency, Hamas will re-emerge with
greater vehemence and commitment to destroy Israel, however
elusive that goal might be.
Under such a scenario, there is also the possibility that a
plethora of jihadists will converge on Gaza, i.e. ISIS and Al-
Qaeda, who will join other local jihadists and create a reign of
terror that will pale in comparison to Hamas.
As a result of these probable developments, Netanyahu is
correct in rejecting the call to reoccupy Gaza and resisting
the introduction of substantial ground troops to destroy
Hamas rocket stockpile, as this will not be possible short of
reoccupation of the Strip.
The other option is to agree on another tactical ceasefre
fashioned along previous ones to provide both sides with some
breathing room. By defnition such a ceasefre is not likely
to hold as it would once again subject Israel to the terror of
rockets raining indiscriminately, wreaking havoc and forcing
thousands to fee in panic to shelters, which the public is
unwilling to tolerate any longer.
For Hamas, a mere easing of the blockade while Israel
continues to maintain tight restrictions on the free fow of
goods and people to and from Gaza will no longer meet the
public outcry for a fundamental change in their miserable daily
lives.
Although Hamas still enjoys grassroots support, the
overwhelming majority of Palestinians in Gaza want an end to
the confict with Israel. For too long they have been subjected
to abject poverty and indignity, and suffered greatly from
repeated confagrations with Israel.
Moreover, Hamas no longer has any appetite to merely
provoke Israel only to suffer tremendous destruction and death
of innocent civilians, which explains why Hamas is looking
for a fundamental change in the status quo and be in a position
to deliver signifcant relief to the public and restore confdence
in its leadership.
One might think that Israel and Hamas would be well disposed
to accepting each others demands and establishing a permanent
ceasefre on which to build, over time, peaceful coexistence.
This regrettably is not the case. But under no circumstances
will the negotiations resume and produce what both sides
ultimately want (lifting the blockade against demilitarization),
which is completely inconsistent with their public positions.
They need a face-saving way out, but they remain haunted by
a deep distrust of each other, which makes it much harder and
ever more complicated to reach any agreement.
Ideally the solution will have to be based on the establishment
of a long-term ceasefre that will provide the basis for the
demilitarization of Gaza and ending the blockade over time
and in phases, with an eye on reaching a more comprehensive
Israeli-Palestinian deal.
Sadly, we are not living in an ideal world, but then what lesson
have both sides learned from this continuing miserable state of
affairs? This war and its repercussions have demonstrated once
again the limits of the use of force alone, as neither side can
emerge unscathed from continuing to slug it out at each other.
Israel, with its mighty military prowess, could not force Hamas
to submission; it still remains capable of wreaking havoc on
the Israeli population. Conversely, Hamas cannot exact one
meaningful concession from Israel by force or by evoking
international outcry for the terrible human tragedies and
material losses it has sustained. It is a bitter lesson both sides
will do well to remember.
Should they now begin to contemplate taking bold steps and
change direction, which appears to be inconceivable at this
juncture? I believe that in the long run they will have no other
choice. Yet, however incongruous this may seem, it is better to
be a fool who tries than a wise man who never dares.

EDITORIAL
NEARLY A WEEK ago, residents of West Point and
other parts of Central Monrovia and Waterside woke
up to an ill planned and implemented quarantine
which resulted into riots; shooting and throwing of
stones.
THE NEWLY TRAINED Armed Forces of Liberia
with a bitter history from yesteryears that has just
undergone training with assurances that it will not
be like the army past was introduced to the Liberian
people on that fateful day when while combining
with the Liberian National Police did what the force
is known for, using excessive force on civilians.
LIKE A REPLICA of the past when security forces
brutally dealt with civilians, the West Point riot has
so far shown two major causalities, a dead boy and
another still undergoing medical attention with other
injuries.
THE INCIDENT HAS been marred by denials
from the AFL about the actual occurrence with
Defense Minister Brownie Samukai frst denying
that live bullets were used against civilians but later
somersaulting through admission that Shaki Kamara
died from the use of lethal weapon.
WITH CONFIRMATION THAT state security forces
used lethal weapons against civilians, government
sources have hinted that President Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf is weighing the setting up of a special
committee to probe the incident.
ADDITIONALLY, THE OPPOSITION Liberty
party has demanded the setting up of such committee
to look into the core of the matter.
WHILE THE CHORUS across the country is
unanimous with calls for such committee to come
into play, we believe setting up such committee is
not suffcient to satisfy the concerns of the Liberians
people and the world at large who are eagerly
watching to see what a civilized government will do
when weapons are used to enforce health measures
especially when the World Health organization has
consistently stated that quarantining is not one of the
best methods in preventing the spread of Ebola.
THE HISTORY OF special committees in Liberia
is public knowledge when several committees have
made recommendations which fndings are twisted to
suit some individuals in Government who are close
allies to the power that be.
WHEN SETTING UP these committees, Liberians
normally hail the President but in the end the reports
from these committees end up in the dust bin.
THE DUNN COMMISSION report on the Knuckle-
gate email scandal, the Carbon deal report, the
November 7, 2011 shooting by state security offcers
against civilians, the Nimba Land dispute committee
report, amongst others.
IMPLEMENTING THE RECOMMENDATIONS
by committees has been the problem but not the
inability of government to setup committees to probe
specifc events and this is why this time around any
committee to be setup must include people who are
independent and the outcome of such committees
work must be publicly discussed and appropriate

actions taken.
A HIGH RANKING member of the National
Legislature and a close friend of President Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf, Margibi County Senator Clarice Jah
recently in a secret recording alluded to the setting up
of makeup committees to make things appear real and
serious in the eyes of the public.
SENATOR JAHS FRANK revelation points to the
actual trend of events regarding the setting up of
committees in Liberia whose reports end up on the
desk.
WE CHALLENGE THE government to do things
differently from the old order this time around as life
has been lost and others in critical condition.
A FIRM ACTION will prove to our security forces
that were trained using donors and tax payers money
that millions were not spent on them in order to rain
havoc on their own people but to rather protect lives
and properties.
WITHOUT CONCRETE ACTIONS, it will pave the
way from the newly trained AFL to wear the same
wolf clothing the army of past wore thus becoming
a force to run away from instead of running to it for
rescue.
THE WEST POINT situation is delicate and must be
dealt with cautiously.

The Editor,
M
adam President, I thought we (Liberians) agreed to avoid blame
shifting and collectively work together as one people to defeat
this deadly Ebola virus. Why are you blaming ordinary citizens
for the spread of this virulent disease? The government takes
greater responsibility for what we are going through right now!
This is what happens when democracy collapses and good governance
is invisible. Ebola is becoming diffcult to defeat simply because public
confdence is lacking. Due to empty promises and poor policies yesteryears,
public reliance and trust has broken. It is not an easy thing to repair broken
hope and aspiration. This is why most citizens are disrespecting the decision(s)
by government. They no longer believe in the ability of this government to
deliver. This is where the problem lies Madam President and I think you need
to work overtime to restore lost hope.
The fght against Ebola is not yours alone. We are in this fght with you.
Hence, let us stop blaming each other and direct our energy and resources
to overcoming Ebola. Furthermore, I condemn the usage of lethal weapons
(guns) by security forces against citizens in West Point. My heart is currently
in the grave with little Kamara who was terribly victimized before his untimely
demise. We demand speedy investigation and anticipate impartial Justice for
this teenager. I hope the blood of justice, equality, freedom, and liberty shall
run through the veins of our nation one day!
During this crisis period, no security personnel should use the State of
Emergency as a cover-up to trample upon the rights of ordinary citizens either
by intimidation, harassment, arbitrary arrest, or brutal force. I condemn any
action of such nature at the highest intensity of my voice. Some of our brothers
in the police and military must understand that Liberia is not an anarchy state.
Notwithstanding, I also express serious disappointment in some residents of
West Point who threw stones at security offcers. West Pointers are not at war
with the police and military.
All of us (Citizens) need to refrain from any violent protest that would
undermine our collective fght against Ebola. Lets abide by governments
decision and keenly observe all stringent measures put in place in order to
promote a safe and healthy society. May God see us through as we gradually
cross the red sea.

The Editor,
T
hanks FrontPageAfrica and your courageous team of reporters.
Despite the risks to your own health for the excellent coverage
of Ebola and its ravaging impact on Liberia, its citizens and
economy.
Ebola has raised to the surface the incompetent leadership of Liberian
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a fact many of us have been exposing
over the years. Whether it is corruption, nepotism, the illegal fre sale of
our natural resources, a diving economy which benefts just one percent
of the population, and to quote US President Barack Obama in his latest
message to the US Congress on July 15, 2014 on the "depletion of
Liberian resources and the secreting of Liberian funds (money)" out of
Liberia by policies that were put into place by a crony of Ellen, Charles
Taylor, but that said policies still continue under the Ellen regime, thereby
denying Liberians the resources to build the needed institutions on which
democracy thrives. This is where Liberia is today and the poor and costly
handling of the Ebola crisis.
I continue to call on Liberians to follow the works of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr and take to the streets in mass, sustained nonviolent protests
to compel the unconditional resignation of the Kletocratic regime that
accommodates and shields criminals from the civil war and economic
criminals, and thereby snubs its nose at international calls from the United
Nations, the Europen Union and from Liberia's historic and fnancial
underwriter, the great United States for the full implementation of the
TRC Report and the prosecution of war and economic criminals.
The bungled approach of the Ellen regime to the Ebola outbreak, the high
cost in human lives and the fight from Liberia of foreign investors, all
present an opportunity for Liberians to capitalize on and employ peaceful
protests to demand regime change.
With the present global media spotlight now laser-focused on Liberia,
we Liberians could not have asked for a better time to demand regime
change to free our people from the claws of political and economic
mismanagement disguised as a constitutional democracy.
We have in Liberia "elected" leaders who could not even be elected on
city
councils of small towns in America if they contested in elections because
of their known corrupt and criminal deeds. But we blindly worship
them in Liberia and in most parts of Africa. Yet, we complain about
the wretched conditions of Africa's poor, its infrastructures and political
institutions, despite the abundant national resources.
So Brussels Airlines is joining other carriers to leave Liberia? Does this
surprise anyone? It is a business decision and prudency demands that
to avoid potential future lawsuits should Ebola contaminated Liberian
passengers board their planes and like Patrick Sawyer did when he became
an Ebola human missile fred by Liberia into Nigeria, after Nigeria had
given $500, 000.00 to Liberia early last month to help contain the virus
in Liberia. What a way to thank the Nigerians. And I bet that money
went into the bank accounts of some of the Kleptocrats. If not, how else
does one justify that frontline healthcare workers were complaining last
month the government owes them fve months in back pay for which
many boycotted work? But this too is Liberia, as it has been since 1847.
After 167 years of "Independence" and we don't have our own national
carrier airlines. Maybe in the next 167 years. But the European Union
gave Liberia US$13 million last year meant solely for healthcare. And we
all know the tales told on how the money was diverted.
Let the United Nations take over the darn country with an American
appointed Governor or Administrator till the mess is cleaned up,
politically and economically. I hope someone in the ever watchful US
National Security Agency that monitors everything anyone on earth says
by phone or writes on the Internet passes my essay on to
President Barack Obama as my panacea for the ills of the Liberian society.

categorically condemn the act of lawlessness on the part of
the Liberian security forces during the handling of the West-
point protest which led to the death of ShakiKamara and the
injuries of several others.
The use of lethalforce on a group of unarmed civilians is unacceptable
and malicious. We are therefore calling on authorities of the Liberian
government to launch a full and thorough investigation into the West-
point protest that lead to ShakiKamara death, the injuries of several
others and to hold accountable, through the Due Process. members
of the security forces responsible for such a gruesome act.
In a democracy, the abuse of power, as in the case of the Armed Forces of
Liberia and the Liberian National Police during the West-point protest,
must be corrected by the rightful authorities so as to maintain law and
order and as well assure the people of Liberia that their government
is capable of upholding their basic and fundamental rights. This will
also maintain trust between the people and their government and keep
Liberias standing in the right place in the international community.

Madam Sawyer, it is shame for you to begin to insult the poverty-stricken
people of Liberia because of your husband's death. Remember, no Liberian
poisoned him; he died as a result of an outbreak which Liberians had
no control over. If your husband was so clean as alleged by you and he
complained of flthy health system in Liberia, why did he in the frst place
agreed to come to Liberia and risk his life? Your husband was part of the
problems in Liberia, he was making salary he could had never made in his
life in US, he usurped two different jobs thereby defrauding gov't. Most
of the Liberians brought home to work always try to insult Liberians at
home, they are the ones making huge salary while the rest are underpaid,
they got access to get vacation and fy back to their heaven any time and
return to their plantation (Liberia). Mrs. Sawyer, u would do yourself better
by refraining from the press with your insults. Liberians are already hurt
with the loss of many of our citizens and the hardship being placed on us
by this outbreak. You people are the ones fomenting anti-diaspora Liberian
feeling at home. If all Liberians would get the salary government is offering
to the other citizens; the health system would have been better. Go and get

Here is my question to you Mr.. Muah; Patrick's sister died on July 7, 2014,
and Patrick went to Mittal on, or July 11, 2014, and he (Patrick) came to the
ministry of fnance between July 11-15, 2014, at which time according to you
(Muah) Patrick was told not to come back to the MOF. Based on that time-
line, how could he have emailed you several weeks earlier informing you of
his sister's death? As I am sure you know, several by defnition, means, more
than three. Patrick and his sister died 18 days apart. The man did not even
live a full three weeks after his sister died. Giving your explanation, he had
to have emailed you between July 7, and the time he last showed up at the
MOF. That is barely a week and a one-day. What is the actual date on that
email you claimed Patrick sent several weeks earlier? What is the real story?
George Sie Williams Co-Founder & Executive Director at Partner for

We are still not learning from the Sawyer's experience. Why are we not
isolating suspected Ebola patients from the communities? They are roaming
freely and we say we have them under surveillance. In the process some
escape their communities and when they get sick elsewhere they establish
new chain of cases. I think 21 days isolation for suspected Ebola patients
will prevent the disease form spreading.
Alyce Anderson Top Commenter
If he was so passionate about improving the healthcare system why did he
go against every code of ethics for a health care professional? You can blame
the Liberian health care system all you want but that doesn't negate the fact
that your husband acted irresponsibly and selfshly when he left the hospital
where he was quarantined and got on that fight to go to Nigeria. As a health
care professional he was aware of the danger he was putting others in but
he didn't care. He wasn't thinking about nobody but himself. He KNEW
he was infected with the virus especially so since his sister had died from
it. He KNEW how easily the virus spreads and he KNEW he was putting
other people lives at risk. This has nothing to do with whether the system is
broken. How do you think the families of all those that died because of your
husband's negligence feel? How do you think the Government of Nigeria
feel? Who do you think these families are blaming, Liberia? Think again.
You can blame the bad health care system, politics and corruption in Liberia
all you want but let's call a spade a spade your husband is not blameless
in this matter. He helped spread the disease among his fellow Liberians
and caused others to die and nothing about that is noble. In fact, he took
the disease to another country and spread it even more. He was rude and
disrespectful to the health care workers both in Liberia and Nigeria. Sorry
for your loss madam, but don't blame everyone else for what Mr. Sawyer
did. After all, others died because of his actions.

Welfare
If Patrick knew all these bad things about Liberia Health System, I think he
could help make a difference. He knew very well that his sister died of Ebola
and he came in contact with her but instead they lied to Catholic hospital
administration and see the numbers of people who have died, these people
were helping to fx our poor Health System. He (Patrick) knew very well that
he was ill but because of fat DSA he force it to Nigeria and now see what
is happening in Nigeria. Follow the story of the American Doctor (Kent),
he isolated himself immediately after he fell ill, these are people who came
from their comfortable homes to help fx our poor health system... BUT your
Late Husband (Patrick) added insult to injury. By God grace this storm will
soon pass over LIBERIA.....

r. Rick Sacra acting administrator of the ELWA hospital
says more people who were diagnosed positive of the
Ebola Virus are surviving and returning home.
Sacra said: We have a lot of patients going back home in
the last three days, these are people who were positive and are now
cured from the infection. People should not be confused about it why
there is no specifc medication if the person can be kept alive through
IV fuid, ORS for two weeks most people own immune system can
built resistance to the virus.
Dr. Sacra an American Missionary working with the ELWA hospital
warned the public that the virus is not yet contained because according
to him every time a center is opened for Ebola, within a few days it is
occupied by patients.
Sacra in an interview with reporters said the issue of capacity is a
major challenge facing the Liberian government and expressed hope
that the issue will be shortly addressed to give opportunity to people
sick with Ebola to be treated.
He made the comments Wednesday when he received assorted food
and non- food items from a group under the banner churches of
Christ in Liberia to be used by the isolation center at the ELWA
hospital in Paynesville.
The ELWA acting administrator commended the group for the gesture
and said; the gesture is what people in such situation needs the most
because according to him; it gives them hope to know that people are
concerned about them despite their situation.
Presenting the items on behalf of the churches of Christ Liberia, Rev.
James Saygar Executive Director of the group relief committee said,
the donation was part of his organization way of joining the Liberian
government in fghting the deadly Ebola virus.
He said, the items which include, Soap, Mattresses, Rice, Juices and
other food and non-food items are to be given to patients in the ELWA
Hospital isolation center.
Saygar said: As churches of Christ members in Liberia we donate
these items to you Dr. Sacra on behalf of the Ebola patients to be used
in your quarantine center, we are impressed with you and beyond our
prayers we want to physically identify with you and it is our prayer
that as you use these items God will use his power to save all of these
people in your Isolation center.
The ELWA hospital is one of those health centers highly hit by the
Ebola outbreak in Liberia which led to its subsequent shutdown.
The Hospital is now recovering since almost a month of closure and
according to authorities at the Hospital the Hospital is only catering
to pregnant women for now and promised that in weeks to come other
areas will be made open to the public.
According to Authorities at the Hospital since resuming it has
delivered closed to 35 new born babies and currently has more to be
born.

A
s Liberia continues
the fght against
the killer Ebola
virus, donations
are fast coming from friends
with the Association of
Indian community in Liberia
becoming the latest to make
signifcant contributions to
the government in fghting the
virus.
Making the presentation
Thursday at the General
Service Agency (GSA) where
the National Task Force is
being hosted, the Honorary
Counsel General of the
India in Liberia Upijit Singh
Sachdeva said the Indian
community is in solidarity
with the government and
sees it as a binding duty and
responsibility to contribute to
the effort against the virus.
Sachdeva said The
Association of Indian
community in Liberia as
one of several communities
in Liberia sees itself as an
important stakeholder in the
Liberian society. As one of the
communities in Liberia, we
too are affected by the disease.
However, we see it our binding
duty and responsibility to
contribute our quota to the
fght to eliminate the disease
in our second, home, Liberia.
The Honorary counsel general
indicated that the enormity of
outbreak of the Ebola disease
in Liberia, and three other
west African Countries-Sierra
Leone, Guinea and Nigeria has
made fghting the epidemic a
global challenge, requiring an
effective global response.
Singh Sachdeva said: The
current outbreak of the
Ebola disease in Liberia
is affecting the country in
many ways. It is affecting
the people; it is affecting all
communities in the country;
it is affecting the Nation, and
it is affecting neighboring
nations. Neighboring and
other states have unfortunately
closed the air and land borders
severely hampering intra-
sub-regional trade on which
Liberia depends largely for
importation of some essential
food items.
Warning against price hike
The Indian Community has
also disclosed that it has
warned all its members against
hiking prices in the wake of the
Ebola crisis and is in solidarity
with the Liberian Government
and people and is concerned of
the outbreak.
Singh Sachdeva promised that
the Indian community has
vowed to do all they can to
curtail the Ebola virus.
He further said the Association
of Indian community in
Liberia as one of the several
communities in Liberia
sees itself as an important
stakeholder in the Liberian
society, and with that
responsibility they too are
affected by the disease and
because of that they see
it as a bounding duty and
responsibility to contribute.
It is against this backdrop
that we have come here today
to present our donation as part
of the National and global
response to fght against the
disease. The donation consists
of wide-range of items
including two ambulances,
two thousand bags of rice,
hospital beds, 24,000 bottles
of water, Household utensils
amongst several other items.
Counsel General Sachdeva
concluded Excellency, it is
therefore my pleasing duty on
behalf of the Association of
Indian community in Liberia,
and as my Honorary Consul
General of India in Liberia to
present to you this delivery
order for the donated items.
The group further commended
the President of Liberia
for what it termed her
extraordinary leadership
in effectively and urgently
responding to the outbreak
and spread of the dreadful
Ebola virus and disclosed
that all members of the Indian
community in Liberia have
being advised to abide by
measures put in place by the
Liberian government.
Ebola is Everybodys Fight
Receiving the items on behalf
of the Taskforce, President
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
who heads the Taskforce
commended the group for
their gesture and called on
them to work with government
in bringing Liberia back from
where it has been.
In further remarks the Liberian
President cautioned foreign
national and business in the
Country to join the efforts in
fghting the Ebola because
in her words the outbreak of
Ebola in Liberia and the region
is everybodys fght.
The Liberia government
continues to receive donations
and goodwill gesture from
well-meaning Liberians,
International partners,
friendly governments and
the International Community
including during the current
Ebola outbreak.
Among the items donated
by the Indian community
to the Task Force include;
2 Ambulances, one with 16
seated capacity while the other
had no seats, 2,400 bottles of
Mineral water, 2000 bags of
rice, 100 bags Hospital Bed
Mattresses, 2000 buckets and
12,000 plates.
Others include; 6000 bowls,
4800 IV fuid (drips), 5,400
pack of Juice, 7500 Detergent
Soap, 4800 Bottles Alcohol
and 50 Hospital folding bed
amongst others.
Amid the numerous donations,
the United nations Mission
in Liberia has warned that
the virus is showing no sign
of reducing due to the slow
response of state authorities.
UNMIL in the report
indicated that state authorities
remain unable to respond
in a signifcant manner and
international response also
remains limited.
The epidemic shows no sign
as yet of stabilization and
reduction. State authorities
remain unable to respond in
a signifcant manner and the
international response remains
limited, stated the report.
The UN Mission is predicting
that cases of the deadly virus
will rise in the coming days
because Liberian authorities
are not able to address the
current situation.
Stated UNMIL It is evident
that the Liberian authorities
are not able to address
the present state of the
country. Consequently, it
can be anticipated that many
additional EVD cases will
arise in the coming days.
SOLIDARITY TO FIGHT EBOLA
The Association of Indian community in Liberia as one of several communities in Liberia sees itself as an
important stakeholder in the Liberian society. As one of the communities in Liberia, we too are affected by the

MIN. NGAFUAN HAILS DRCS SOLID AFRICAN
SOLIDARITY, RECEIVES CONGOLESE MEDICAL TEAM
BUTRESSING
GOVERNMENTS EFFORT
Monrovia-
A
s the Ebola crisis
deepens some
communities have
begun setting up
local networks to buttress
governments effort and one
of such is the Police Academy
community in Paynesville
which under the banner Police
Academy Development
Association [PACDA] has
gathered residents who are
public health and community
development practitioners to
train volunteers in helping to
combat the outbreak.
PACDA has divided the
volunteers into various teams
and some of the youths are
responsible for carrying out
Ebola awareness messages while
others are doing contact tracing
and helping to refer Ebola
suspects by calling the hotlines.
The Chairman of PACDA David
Lawor said, the Ebola fght is
beyond the government adding
that it requires the collective
efforts of all Liberians.
Lawor said, the best way for
the government to combat the
Ebola outbreak is work through
community structures.
Ebola is killing our people and
the government has declared war
on Ebola and Police Academy
is no exception so we are taking
matter into our own hands
that means we will organize
a community taskforce to
adequately provide information
to our citizens that live in Police
Academy, Lawor said.
Lawor said, young people from
various blocs in his community
have been recruited as volunteers
to join the Ebola fght.
These are all volunteers; we
recruited young people from
bloc to bloc encouraging them,
that Ebola fght is about the
young people that is why they
are in their numbers.
Lawor continued: We as
community development
practitioners know that the far
way you are from the community
it is going to be diffcult to
develop the community.
Al-Varney Rogers alrogers2008@gmail.com 0886304498
The PACDA chairman urged the
government to use community
structures in combating the
outbreak.
This fght the government has
launched against Ebola will only
be successful if the community
development approach is
encouraged that is let the
government of Liberia work
through community structures,
Lawor recommends.
Lawor said, the fght Ebola
requires intensive community
awareness led by locals.
He added that the government
should take the issue of Ebola
to the doorstep of everyone
citizens.
If they think by moving in
vehicles from streets to streets
singing Ebola song is the way to
fght Ebola in my mind it will not
succeed, Lawor explains.
Lawor said, empowering the
community is the best way to
tackle the outbreak.
Empowering the community is
the best way, how many of our
people can adequately listen to
radio, Lawor inquired.
So the best way to do it is to go
in the community and carry the
message, I think thats the way to
fght Ebola, Lawor said.
PACDA Ebola Taskforce
coordinator Tutu Yanty said,
initiative is driven by the
community commitment adding
that it is not sponsored by the
government.
This initiative is not sponsored
by the government or anybody it
is purely the community that is
doing this, Yanty said.
Yanty added: I want to tell other
community to get involve it is
not the matter of the government
it is everybody concern, I
am appealing to all of the
communities to rally around the
government for us to fght this
outbreak.
Yanty said, they [community]
have set up a team to track sick
people and strangers in the
community.
We are doing this for our people
to know the seriousness of this

Monrovia,
F
oreign Minister
Augustine Kpehe
Ngafuan has described
as a demonstration
of solid African solidarity
ongoing efforts by the
Democratic Republic of Congo
(DRC) in helping Liberia battle
the Ebola virus.
A Foreign Ministry release
says the Foreign Minister made
the assertion Tuesday when
a visiting fve-man medical
team from the DR Congo paid
a courtesy call on him at his
Foreign Ministry offce on
Capitol Hill.
Foreign Minister Ngafuan,
on behalf of the Liberian
Government and people of
Liberia, extended thanks to
President Joseph Kabila and the
Government and people of the
DR Congo for demonstrating
what he called solid African
solidarity.
It is said that in great danger,
real friends are known and it
is in this period that Liberia is
getting a lot of credible data
as to who our real friends are
because our true friendsnear,
farare coming to assist us
battle this deadly Ebola virus,
he said.
He said the Liberian Government
and people are happy with the
DRCs intervention because
the DRC was showing the
opposite of what some African
brothers are doing: Weve
made it known that some of the
actions, or the reactions that
have been taken by some of our
African brotherssome very
far removed, some who dont
even share contiguous borders
with usare in an effect not in
line with African solidarity, they
are not consistent with experts
advise and what in essence
they are doing is trying to make
it doubling diffcult for us to
deal with this Ebola crisis as
expeditiously as we would want
to deal with it.
He said the presence of DRC
medical expert team can be
considered as a reciprocation
of Liberias contribution to the
former Zaires independence
struggle by sending troops to
what was known as the Congo
War during the 1960s.
As we speak, there are some
off-springs of some of those
Liberians that are still in DR
Congo, he added, expressing
optimism that Ebola will soon
leave Liberia. He said that
when the Ebola menace is over,
Liberians and friends of Liberia
will frstly thank God and then
look to the DRC for what it has
done for the country despite
being far-off.
Minister Ngafuan then
expressed hope that both
Liberian and Congolese experts
can work together over a longer
period of time to ensure that
Ebola is out of Liberia.
Speaking earlier, a member
of the Congolese teams, Dr.
Mukendi Kalambayi, Internist
in charge of Control Infection,
asserted that the teams visit is
a result of a direct instruction
from President Joseph Kabila
of the DRC. He stated that
such a visit is an opportunity to
strengthen the ties between both
countries.
All this is happening because
of the long-standing relationship
between Liberia and the Congo
[DRC], that is why President
Joseph Kabila himself sent
this medical team to Liberia to
help with this Ebola fght. This
is an opportunity to strengthen
the ties between our both
countries, Dr. Kalambayi told
Minister Ngafuan.
For his part, Professor Doctor
Muyembe Fafum Jean Jacques
who heads the fve-man team
indicated that it was a pleasure
for his country to help Liberia in
its Ebola fght.
He revealed that he was the frst
to be on the Ebola feld since
1976 during the frst outbreak of
the virus in his country, adding,
And since then, we have been
affected six different times. And
yesterday, we heard of another
outbreak [in DRC].
Professor Doctor Jean Jacques
explained that his team has
made a couple of visits to
various medical facilities here in
Liberia including the National
Ebola laboratory, a UNICEF
lab, and the St. Joseph Catholic
Hospital. He said the Congolese
team has concluded talks with

will be telling the people is that
they should wash their hands,
avoid hand shaking, dont allow
strangers in your house, Yanty
said.
Yanty continued: Ebola is a
dangerous virus so if we just sit
and look at the government alone
I dont think the messages will
reach to our people.
She further said Each bloc has
ten members you know Ebola is
a dangerous virus so if we just sit
and look at the government alone
I dont think the messages will
reach to our people.
A volunteer Gabriel Fagara said,
he takes pride in forming part of
such initiative in his community.
Fagara said, there are people who
do not believe that Ebola exist
adding that with such awareness
it helps to stop the spread of the
disease.
Some people who never had
this Ebola bucket are now buying
their buckets, people are now
responding to our messages,
Fagara said.
Fagara observed that some
members of the community think
the leadership is getting money
from the government to carry out
the awareness.
It is challenging, but if we do
not do it for our community who
do we expect to do it for us,
Fagara said.

of recommendations including
the restoration of confdence in
the communities by ensuring
that medical structures are
restored for the identifcation
of anyone with fever. This, he
said, would attract people to
the health centers rather than
staying at homes which he said
would be more risky and could
make the chain of contamination
very long.
Ebola has its socio-cultural
and security aspects..We
are convinced that Liberia will

the Ebola Control Team in DR.

Monrovia-
A
certifed Ebola
survivor Mohammed
Sheriff of Barnesville
junction has arrived
from Foya Ebola transit Camp
in Lofa County, where he was
released from isolation after he
tested negative to the virus.
Sheriff, who contracted the
deadly Virus last month in an
interview with FrontPageAfrica,
said it was hard for him to
believe that he had a disease that
had no known cure.
I got sick; I was toileting,
vomiting and weak. But I denied
that I had Ebola. But you know
all Ebola Patients can lie, nobody
can come and say I get sickness
or I get it like this, Sheriff said
On July 31, 2014 that Sheriffs
health deteriorated rapidly after
the government had shut all of
its health facilities, including
community clinics and it became
diffcult for him to seek medical
attention. Due to this situation,
he decided to go up to Lofa
County to get medical treatment.
Sheriff said he was taken to
the Telleweyon hospital in
Lofa county to seek treatment
but healthcare workers at the
hospital were also afraid to touch
anyone at the time.
When we arrived at the hospital,
the nurses asked me to buy some
medicines, when we brought
the medicines, the nurse was
nowhere to be found, he said.
He said when he returned to the
hospital the following day, the
nurse told him she could not see
him because she had lost two of
her sisters to the disease already.
Right at that moment, an
Ambulance arrived at the
hospital and I was advised to go
and have a test along with two
other persons, he said.
Upon arrival in Foya, Sherriff
said a foreign Doctor came to
their Ambulance, sprayed it and
after spraying it he was brought
out along with other patients. He
said blood samples were taken
and it was confrmed that he had
the deadly Ebola virus, but he
added that he was still in denial.
I was even vex, I said I m

going, I dont have Ebola, I dont
have Ebola how can I get Ebola,
said sheriff
The white doctor in charge at
that moment tried to calmed me
and said to me; I will not lie on
you, you have Ebola, and the way
you vex like this you want go, if
I say go, if you go, thousands of
people will die behind you. If
anyone touch you the person will
get it, if you touch anybody, that
person will get it so dont go.
Sheriff said he insisted on
leaving and the doctor advised
him to stay.
In the ward
He said at the center he was
being treated, there were four
persons to a room and many
Ebola patients just like him were
at times seen lying helplessly
and very weak.
Sheriff said he was terrifed that
some mornings, when he woke
up and looked around him, he
would only notice that he was
sleeping between corpses.
You cant help your friend,
sometimes you wake up you
lying down between two dead
bodies. Sometimes if you not
satisfed you just start hauling
your mattress and the next place
you going you will meet another
dead body there, sheriff said
He said sometimes he noticed
that patients are not themselves
because of the food and
medication they provide to them.
He said he did not like the food
the hospital provided was giving
but had no choice.
At one point he demanded the
doctors to allow his sister bring
food for him but that was not
allowed.
They can cook, and the
medicine they giving and the
food comes late so I will tell
them it was not in place, he
said. The eating hour, if you can
give me medicine three times a
day, three times a night and then
you bring me food at 3:00PM
it can be diffcult. The food is
enough, but is not in place.
Food distribution everybody
inline waiting to catch their
food, food are being sprayed
and thrown in plastic in the air
so those who are strong can
catch and help the weak ones to
catch theirs because there was a
boundary between us.
He said the medication provided
was good and the minimum
tablet a sick person takes is six
per hour and per day he took
about 20 tablets in 24hours.
People go to foya after the tests
are conducted the Ebola patients
are confrmed and the non Ebola
patients are treated and later
referred to another hospitals, he
said.
Render service in community
According to him the doctors
certifcated him because he
tested negative for the disease
repeatedly.
The doctor said to me, the
medicine has certifed you and
you are to go out to the society
to help, he said. Sheriff said he
wants to volunteer his service to
the fght against Ebola.
In case someone dies in the
community, we can be available
and protected to go out and help
take care of that person who
have died instead of waiting for
the medical team. The people
who are taking care are dressed
fearfully, which alone tells that
the sickness is bad, so if I am to
help I should be dressed the same
way in order to help someone in
the community.
He said no one should take the
deadly virus for joke adding:
The fnal word is Ebola is true
and it not sickness that can cure
and it cant kill until you allow it.
Once you know it, take yourself
to the hospital and you are taking
care of, you will get well.
He said the government should
do more by creating more
awareness on the dangers of the
disease.

AMERICAN BASED
LIBERIAN FOOTBALL
STAR HOLDS
FUNDRAISER
FOR EBOLA
Monrovia-
A
Liberian football star based in the United States of
America has told FrontPageAfrica that through his effort
he and other Liberians along with some Sierra Leoneans
have been able to raise over US$5,000 through a football
tournament and the amount would be sent back home to their
respective countries as their own contribution to the fght against the
Ebola virus.
Prince Lobah Monyon is a professional goalkeeper presently playing
for Junior Lone Star FC, a Philadelphia based registered football club
in the Eastern Conference National Premier soccer league (NPSL),
the fourth professional soccer league in the USA.
Monyon told FPA that the tournament was played among eight teams
made up of Liberian, Sierra Leonean and Guinean nationals and said
the aim was not to get a winner but to raise money in order to help
their people back home to fght against the Ebola virus.
We as Liberians, Sierra Leoneans and Guineans based in the USA
are very concerned and worried about our people back home in our
respective countries because of the disaster the virus has caused
among them so we all agreed to join hands and raise some money
along with other important equipment to be sent back to our respective
countries in order to be used in the fght against the disease. We all
hope this will be done very quickly.
He called on Liberians in the USA and other parts of the world to
listen to the cry of their people and quickly respond to their call with
some cash or equipment as they continue the fght against the virus.
Every Liberian in and out of the country knows very well that this
troublesome virus has no friend or relative and that it could destroy
every home and family if the appropriate actions are not taken so it
is the obligation of all Liberians to rally around our government and
the international community to destroy this disease totally from our
country.
The goalkeeper emphasized that his main aim of organizing the
tournament was not for him to be called to justify his inclusion on
the senior Lone Star of Liberia as he suggested two weeks ago or
as people may think but to help his people back home at this critical
stage of their lives
The tournament opening game was played between Cavalla FC
and Club International FC while Debamu FC went against Atlanta
General in the second battle and Racing Star FC battled with Honda
FC. The other match saw Atlanta All Star played against Essex FC.
House Warriors met African Star, Tennessee Pro battled with Tronten
FC; Junior Lone Star FC engaged Manchester FC and WSM FC
played against Lawrenceville FC in the last game.
It can be recalled about two weeks ago Goalkeeper Monyon expressed
his interest of playing for the senior national football team, The Lone
Star of Liberia because according to him, he has vast experience in
the game and that he is playing in one of the competitive leagues in
the USA.
Goalkeeper Monyon 28 was born in Kakata City, Margibi County and
he left Liberia for the USA at the age of 14 during the early stage of
14 years civil war.

Monrovia-
L
iberias Ministry of
National Defense
has described a
FrontPageAfrica report
naming the alleged shooter in
last Wednesdays West Point
shooting as an attempt to
prejudice the outcome of an
investigation that has been set up
to probe the matter.
Stated the ministry: "The
attention of the Ministry of
National Defense has been
drawn to the Wednesday,
August 27, 2014, Vol. 8 No. 664
edition of the FrontPageAfrica
Newspaper's front page led story
captioned: "SHAKI SHOOTER
IDENTIFIED?"
"The FRONTPAGE newspaper
quoting alleged Armed Forces of
Liberia sources, made reference
to the shooter as Pfc (Private
frst Class) Edwin Wah assigned
with the Joint Task Force
1A Monrovia/Montserrado/
West Point. The paper further
referenced the alleged shooter
as a soldier who "has a history
of disobedience and agitation of
superiors"."
The ministry apparently
outraged by the paper's naming
of the alleged doer of the act
and not waiting for fndings of
its probe into the matter stated
that the report was therefore
unprofessional.
"The authorities of the ministry
of National Defense view this
story as very unfortunate and
unprofessional at a time when
a board of inquiry has already
been constituted to investigate
the incident," stated the ministry
in its release.
"The prejudicial alleged
description and characterization
of the alleged shooter as carried
by the paper in the absence
of the outcome of the board's
investigation and fndings is
intended to undermine the
independence, integrity and
outcome of the investigation."
The ministry went further to
warn the writer of the story to
stop reporting on the subject
and wait for the outcome of the
investigation.
"The ministry of National
Defense expects full cooperation
of the independent media and
calls on them, particularly
the writer of this story of the
FrontPageAfrica in newspaper to
exercise maximum respect
and restraint in commenting
on an issue that is being given
due investigative elevation,"
stated MoD in its statement. We
all must await the outcome of
this investigation by the board
of inquiry and refrain from
unprofessional comments and
conclusions which may have
the propensity to prejudice the
outcome of the investigation."
It can be recalled that last
Wednesday, bloody clashes
broke out in West Point between
residents and security forces that
saw the AFL discharging live
rounds that caused the death of
Shaki Kamara.
Defense Minister Brownie
Samukai earlier told reporters
that the 15-year-old had
caused his own wound after he
tripped over a barbed wire but
somersaulted a few days later
UNPROFESSIONAL'
when it became clear that
someone, from the army had shot
into the crowd and killed the
youngster and wounded another
who had bullet removed from his
stomach.
The army had gone to help
evacuate Miatta Flowers,
commissioner of now
Quarantined West Point. This
evacuation led to stoning of the
security forces by community
members mainly angry youths of
the area. As the stoning became
unbearable, the police started to
retreat as one offcer sustained
injury in the eye because a rock
had hit him. The army continued
to exercise restraint but as the
stoning continued they
began to shoot using live bullets.
FrontPageAfrica gathered
that the alleged shooter of the
teenager is a Private 1st Class
offcer named Edwin Wah,
assigned with Joint Task Force 1
Monrovia/Montserrado county/
West Point.
Wah is said to have fred two
shots into the right leg of the
late Kamara, thus splitting apart
his sheen and spilling out his
marrows. Video evidence of the
incident shows that after the
shots were fred the boy dropped
to the foor yelling and waving
his hands in excruciating pain.
Some of his friends braved the
storm and came closer to him;
one of them even picked him
up as the foot that had been
shot wiggled and blood dripped
everywhere. But the army did
not stop but kept fring and the
guy holding the late Kamara
dropped him back on the ground
and began to run away.
Private Wah is allegedly noted
for disobedience and agitation
with superiors according to
military sources.
Kamara died in the late hours
of last Wednesday night at the
Redemption hospital as a result
of the wound he sustained during
the clashes.
Hospital sources confrmed
gunshot wounds on Kamara and
but the Chief medical director
at the hospital Dr. Mohamed
Sankor could not confrm
cause of death said the boy was
brought in with two others from
the riot scene. He said the boy
was bleeding profusely when he
was brought in to the hospital.
Liberia's Defense Minister
Samukai told FrontPageAfrica
Monday, that both lethal and
non-lethal weapons were used in
the West Point riots.
"I can tell you that after careful
review of all of the photographs
and videos from the West Point
riots last week, it has been
established that both lethal and
non lethal weapons were used in
the shootings," Minister Samukai
said negating earlier claims
he made that the late Kamara
sustained the injuries due to his
tripping on a barbed wire.
Samukai confrmed that a board
of inquiry will now be set up to
determine what took place last
week.
"It is on the basis of the new
fndings and development that
the government has decided
to set up a board of inquiry,"
Samukai said.
Last Wednesday, Minister
Samukai said Shaki sustained
the cut from barbed wire that was
used for the blockade.
"The wound is a superfcial
wound, a wound in which the
individual was jumping or
was running or through the
stampede wounded himself,"
said Samukai.
The shooting also drew concern
from the United Nations Mission
in Liberia (UNMIL) whose
head, Ms. Karen Landgren, told
a news conference Friday said
President Sirleaf had vowed
that security force would not
use such deadly force again. She
said the deadly Ebola outbreak
is having negative repercussions
for Liberia.
"We've seen the potential for
security to deteriorate, even in
the context of health efforts," said
Ms. Landgren. "And UNMIL
welcomes the President's
statement earlier today that
under no circumstances would
lethal force be used again."
A second boy from the
quarantined community of West
Point had a bullet removed from
his stomach at the S.D Cooper
Clinic in Monrovia on last Friday
after his family with the help of
the commissioner and health
workers rushed him to hospital.
The boy identifed as Benny-Boy
sustained a bullet hole in the
stomach during the riot in West
Point on Wednesday according
to family sources.
The boy's family confrmed
that a bullet was removed from
his belly. His uncle Mr. Arthur
Gurley said the boy sustained
the injuries during Wednesday's
riots and that the boy's condition
is not yet stable.

died from Ebola
after treating a contact of a
Liberian-American man who
was the frst recorded case
of the virus in Africa's most
populous country, the Health
Ministry said on Thursday.
Health Minister Onyebuchi
Chukwu said in a statement
that the doctor fell ill after
treating a patient who was
a contact of Patrick Sawyer,
who died from Ebola in
Lagos after fying in from
Liberia last month.
The death in Port Harcourt
brings the number of Ebola
fatalities in Nigeria to 6,
all of whom were direct or
indirect contacts of Sawyer.

UN: EBOLA CASES COULD
EVENTUALLY REACH 20,000

GENEVA (AP)
T
he Ebola outbreak
in West Africa
eventually could
exceed 20,000 cases,
more than six times as many
as are known now, the World
Health Organization said
Thursday as the United States
announced plans to test an
experimental Ebola vaccine.
Currently, about half of the
people infected with Ebola have
died, so in a worst-case scenario
the death toll could reach 10,000,
the agency said, according to a
plan released Thursday on how
to stop the outbreak.
The U.N. agency's latest fgures
show that 1,552 people have
died from the virus from among
the 3,069 cases reported so far
in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea
and Nigeria. However, it said the
actual number of cases in many
hard-hit areas may be two to
four times higher than that. That
suggests there could be up to
12,000 cases already.
"This far outstrips any historic
Ebola outbreak in numbers.
The largest outbreak in the
past was about 400 cases," Dr.
Bruce Aylward, WHO's assistant
director-general for emergency
operations, told reporters.
More than 40 percent of the
cases have been identifed in
the last three weeks, the U.N.
health agency said, adding
that "the outbreak continues to
accelerate." Aylward said the
agency does not necessarily
expect 20,000 cases, but a
system must be put into place to
handle such a massive increase
in case numbers.
The U.S. National Institutes of
Health, meanwhile, announced it
will start testing an experimental
Ebola vaccine in humans next
week. The vaccine was developed
by the U.S. government and
GlaxoSmithKline and the
preliminary trial will test the
shot in healthy U.S. adults in
Maryland. At the same time,
British experts will test the same
vaccine in healthy people in the
U.K., Gambia and Mali.
The vaccine trial was accelerated
in response to the outbreak that
has ravaged West Africa and
led to riots as poorly designed
quarantines were put into place
against tens of thousands of
people.
Preliminary results to determine
if the vaccine is safe could be
available within months.
Aylward said the current
outbreak was posing a unique
challenge because there are
multiple hotspots in several
countries, including some in
densely populated urban areas.
Previous outbreaks had happened
in a single, remote area.
The new plan aims to stop
Ebola transmission in affected
countries within six to nine
months and prevent it from
spreading internationally. It calls
for $489 million over the next
nine months and requires 750
international health workers and
12,000 national ones.
The goal is to take "the heat out
of this outbreak" within three
months, Aylward said. The
next goal would be to stop the
transmission of the killer virus
within eight weeks of a new case
being confrmed anywhere in the
world.
The third major goal is to increase
the preparedness for dealing with
Ebola in all nations that share
borders with affected countries
or have major transportation
hubs, he said.
Doctors Without Borders, a
charity that has criticized the
WHO and the international
community for responding too
slowly to the crisis, warned that
the new U.N. plan "should not
give a false sense of hope."
"As an international public
health emergency, states with
the capacity to help have the
responsibility to mobilize
resources to the affected
countries, rather than watching
from the sidelines with a naive
hope that the situation will
improve," Brice de le Vingne, the
group's director of operations,
said in a statement.
Air France on Wednesday
canceled its fights to Sierra
Leone; the WHO has urged
airlines to lift such restrictions.
"Right now there is a super risk of
the response effort being choked
off, being restricted, because
we simply cannot get enough
seats on enough airplanes to get
people in and out, and rotating,
to get goods and supplies in and
out and rotating," Aylward said.
Nigerian authorities, meanwhile,
said a man who contracted
Ebola after coming into contact
with a traveler from Liberia had
evaded surveillance and infected
a doctor in southern Nigeria who
later died.
The doctor is the sixth person to
die of the disease in Nigeria and
marks the frst fatality outside
the commercial capital of Lagos,
where a Liberian-American man,
Patrick Sawyer, few in in late
July.
The World Food Program says it
is preparing to feed 1.3 million
people in Guinea, Liberia and
Sierra Leone in the coming
months because measures to
control an Ebola outbreak have
cut off whole communities from
markets, pushed up food prices
and separated farmers from their
felds. Denise Brown, the West
Africa regional director for the
U.N. agency, said $70 million
is needed immediately to meet
those needs.

EBOLA VACCINE FROM GSK FAST-TRACKED INTO CLINICAL TRIALS
By Ben Hirschler and Sharon
Begley
LONDON/NEW YORK
(Reuters) -
A
n experimental
Ebola vaccine from
GlaxoSmithKline
is being fast-
tracked into human studies and
the company plans to build a
stockpile of up to 10,000 doses
for emergency deployment, if
results are good.
The research work is being
accelerated with funding from
an international consortium,
refecting mounting concern
over the worst outbreak of the
disease that has killed more than
1,500 people in West Africa.
GSK's candidate vaccine, being
co-developed with the U.S.
National Institutes of Health
(NIH), is expected to be given
to healthy volunteers in Britain
and the United States from
about mid-September, with the
program then being extended to
Gambia and Mali.
Britain's biggest drugmaker
said on Thursday the Phase I
trials would start as soon as they
received ethical and regulatory
approvals.
The NIH's National Institute
of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases is also working on a
wider program of clinical trials,
including tests of a version of
the GSK vaccine that may fght a
second strain of Ebola, as well as
the West African one.
In addition, U.S. researchers
plan human tests of a vaccine
developed by Canadian
government scientists, which
has been licensed to NewLink
Genetics.
The trials being announced will
enroll healthy volunteers with
the goal of determining whether
the vaccine is safe and whether
it provokes a protective immune
response.
The aim is to complete these tests
by the end of 2014, after which
vaccines could be deployed on
an emergency basis.
RACE TO TEST
In a grim assessment of the
deadly disease, the World Health
Organisation said on Thursday
that the current Ebola outbreak
was continuing to accelerate and
could infect more than 20,000
people.
Jeremy Farrar, director of
the Wellcome Trust medical
charity, which is helping to
fund the vaccine trials, said the
effectiveness of vaccines and
drugs could only be assessed
during epidemics, so it was vital
to test products now.
GSK plans to begin making up
to about 10,000 additional doses
of its vaccine at the same time
as the initial clinical trials, so if
they are successful vaccine could
be made available immediately
for an emergency immunization
program.
NewLink has also contracted
for the manufacture of increased
supplies of its vaccine.
A steering committee made up
of senior offcials from NIH and
the U.S. Department of Defense
also approved last week the frst
step toward using three advanced
laboratories to manufacture
Ebola vaccines and treatments, a
person familiar with the planning
told Reuters.
The three labs, in Texas,
Maryland and North Carolina,
were set up in 2012 by the
U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS)
in partnership with private
industry to respond to pandemics
or chemical, biological,
radiological or nuclear threats..
The GSK vaccine consists of
a common cold virus, called
an adenovirus, that has been
engineered to carry two genes
of the Ebola virus. Animal
testing has shown that when the
adenovirus infects cells the Ebola
genes produce harmless proteins
that stimulate the immune system
to produce antibodies to Ebola.
CAN IMPROVED NUTRITION PREVENT
THE NEXT EBOLA OUTBREAK?
D
r. Kent Brantly, the
medical missionary
who had contracted
Ebola while helping
its victims in West Africa, walked
out of the hospital last week, cured.
At a press conference, the 33-year-
old Texan called his recovery a
miracle.
The top-tier care Brantly and
a stricken colleague who also
recovered, 59-year-old nurse
Nancy Writebol, received at Emory
University Hospital certainly
contributed to their recovery,
but they also had another key
advantage: They were far better
nourished than the typical West
African when they fell ill.

RONALDO NAMED UEFA'S BEST PLAYER IN EUROPE
C
ristiano Ronaldo has been named as Uefa's
Best Player in Europe for his Champions
League-winning heroics with Real Madrid
in 2013-14.
The Portuguese, 29, scored a remarkable 17 goals in
11 European games as Carlo Ancelotti's stormed to the
Decima and struck three times en route to Copa del Rey
glory as Madrid completed the cup double.
Though the Santiago Bernabeu side were less successful
in La Liga, Ronaldo still averaged more than a goal a
game (31 efforts in 30 matches) as they fnished third
behind Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
The former Manchester United forward was voted as the
best player ahead of Bayern Munich duo Manuel Neuer
and Arjen Robben, who starred as Pep Guardiola's men
lifted four of a possible six trophies last season.
"I'm really, really happy," Ronaldo said upon being
