STATEMENT of PURPOSE

(when applying for Northwestern University)

I had developed a vision to prse a gradate degree and professional !areer in the field of
Materials S!ien!e and Engineering (MS"E) at the end of #y stdy in high s!hool$ And hen!e% I
de!ided to prse #y ndergradate ed!ation in the field of Metallrgi!al Engineering offered
&y the University of Indonesia% 'a(arta% a highly top respe!ted p&li! niversity in Indonesia$ A
few fa!ts and o&servations that have !ased #e to drea# of &e!o#ing a part of the so!iety of
#aterial resear!hers and engineers who #a(e real differen!es in h#an lives !an &e #entioned
as follows) (*) all engineering appli!ations re+ire an nderstanding of the #aterials involved%
and ths #astering of the (nowledge has &e!o#e an i#portant re+ire#ent in the advan!e#ent
of s!ien!e and te!hnology, (-) MSE !ontri&tes to the develop#ents of #any prod!ts and ite#s
we #ight ta(e for granted every day% s!h as fi&er.opti! !a&les for tele!o##ni!ation% I/s sed

6ith a solid &a!(grond in the (nowledge of &asi! s!ien!es (/he#istry% Physi!s and
Mathe#ati!s)% #etallrgy and #aterials engineering in general% I a# !onfident that I have a
strong fondation to follow and parti!ipate in the gradate !orses$ I a# also e+ipped with
la&oratory e3perien!es involving #any aspe!ts of #etallrgy and #aterials !hara!teri4ations% and
had !ond!ted independent ndergradate resear!h pro2e!t to satisfy the final year gradation
re+ire#ent$ My thesis wor(% nder the spervision of 0r$ 777% had given #e a vala&le
opportnity to e3plore the s!ien!e and art of !ond!ting resear!h$ I intera!ted !losely with a
!o#pany (777 #otor!y!le #anfa!trer in Indonesia) to !ond!t a stdy on fra!tre &ehavior
of a die !o#ponent #ade of spe!ial alloyed tool steel via E0M pro!ess$ Ot of this training
pro!ess I had learnt to e3press and !o##ni!ate #y ideas !learly% and to !ond!t e3peri#ents
and to analy4e data syste#ati!ally$ 0ring #y ndergradate !areer% I also wor(ed part.ti#e to
spport #y ed!ation &y ta(ing a position as a tea!hing assistant spervising a!tivities in several
la&s and giving ttorials to fresh#en8sopho#ore stdents$ All these e3perien!es have helped #e
i#prove #y !o##ni!ation s(ills and a&ility to wor( in a tea#% and &ild p #y self.

Another di#ension that has positively !ontri&ted to #y life !o#es fro# #y strong personal
!hara!ters$ I a# diligent% hard wor(ing% eager to learn and to progress% and persevering yong
fellow$ I drea# high and wor( hard to a!hieve #y goals$ These !hara!ters and attitdes have led
#e to #any a!ade#i! and s!holarship a!hieve#ents% in!lding the award of 9the &est
gradate8valedi!torian: a#ong #y fellow !lass#ates% s!holarships fro# the niversity and 777
!o#pany% and few awards fro# winning s!ien!e !o#petitions dring #y high s!hool years$

world$ I a# a!tively involved in so!ial and !ltral a!tivities pro#oted on !a#ps and a#ong
other niversities$ 1re+ently I a# given the trst to lead and !oordinate so!ial and religios
events and a!tivities rea!hing ot to others in the !o##nity$ The vales of resear!h e3perien!e%
a!ade#i! a!hieve#ents% and personal !hara!ters lay a strong fondation for #e to esta&lish
professional assets to &e s!!essfl in #y gradate stdies$

world!lass instittion where fa!lties% staffs and stdents !onstantly #a(e &rea(throghs at the
frontier of the s!ien!e$ The depart#ent of MS"E is fa#osly (nown to have e3!ellent and
+alified fa!lty #e#&ers who have attra!ted the &est stdents fro# arond the world$ The
resear!h progra#s at the MS"E depart#ent have always &een the ones that are innovative and
!hallenging$ This o&servation is spported &y the fa!t that MS"E has &een a&le to se!re
!ontinos resear!h fnding in #any areas% and to #aintain e3!ellent p&li!ations and
&rea(throghs reported elsewhere$ The !rrent resear!h progra#s at MS"E in !era#i!s%
ele!troni! #aterials% poly#ers and !o#posites have strongly attra!ted #e to apply to the
depart#ent sin!e they #at!h well with #y resear!h interests$ My drea# is to &e a part of the
tea# of gradate stdents and fa!lty #e#&ers who# I !an learn fro# and !ontri&te to% so that
I !an &e e+ipped to fa!e the !hallenges in the ftre when rnning along the path that leads to
#y goals$ I have set #y professional o&2e!tives to &e a fa!lty #e#&er and resear!her wherever
