The red t-shirts of the Haddon-
field Education Association stood
out among the crowd at the Board
of Education meeting on Aug. 28.
Teachers and a few parents came
out to support each other over
their concerns that teachers have
been without a contract since it
expired June 30 and a settlement
has still not been reached.
Right now, we are working
without a contract, which is quite
a burden on our members in
terms of the financial burden in-
volved and the extra anxiety wor-
rying about it, said Corinne
Welsh, co-president of the HEA
and a high school English teacher.
The main reason we are here
tonight is to bring the communi-
tys attention and the boards at-
tention to what our situation has

Active Heroes, a 501c3 National
charity is hosting the Carry The
Fallen event across America, in-
cluding Haddonfield, to help re-
duce veteran suicide. The Carry
the Fallen event is a team ruck
march event where participants
can choose between three, six, 12
or 22 hour long trails to set their
own difficulty. The event builds
camaraderie while participants
can raise funds to help build re-
gional military family retreat
centers, the first of which is locat-
ed in Shepherdsville, Ky.
The Philadelphia/South Jersey
Carry The Fallen event will take
place on Sept. 6 at 7 a.m. The
starting point will be at Haddon
Fire Company, 15 N. Haddon Ave.,
in Haddonfield, and follow a trail
or road for several hours. Partici-
pants are encouraged to arrive at
the starting point by 6:30 a.m. so
that opening ceremonies can
commence promptly at 6:45 a.m.
The Carry The Fallen event will
end at Haddon Fire Company as
well. Participants will earn a mil-
itary patch for completing the
course once they have raised $100
for Active Heroes.
Twenty-two veterans a day
commit suicide due to many trig-
gering points, including post
traumatic stress and substance
abuse. Active Heroes is working
to reduce veteran suicide with
team events such as the Carry the
Fallen. The ruck march event has
already had thousands of veter-
ans, military families and mili-
tary supporters participate who
have been impacted greatly.
When a veteran or military
family member is struggling
mentally, Active Heroes has a
dozen of our team members wrap
their arms around the individ-
ual, said founder of Active He-
roes, Troy Yocum. The Carry
The Fallen event is growing and
becoming a national movement to
raise awareness about veterans
suicide. Team arent just doing
something small with these
hikes, donations are building a
first of a kind retreat center that
will be an ultimate place of heal-
ing for veterans that will last for
generations.
The Carry The Fallen event
started in 2012 as a small hike that
initially raised $17,000 for Active
Heroes. Now in 2014, the event has
raised more than $300,000 for Ac-
tive Heroes for the military family
retreat center. Donations have
been used to purchase 144 acres in
Shepherdsville, Ky., and equip-
ment for the retreat, including a
tractor, front loader, bush-hog,
four lawn mowers, landscaping,
statues and camping supplies. In
April of 2014, Active Heroes wel-
comed the first-ever group of vet-
erans and families with the Ken-
tucky National Guard Resiliency
training. Future goals at the first
retreat location include cabins,
welcome center and activities for
all families members. Future
goals for Active Heroes is to build
retreat centers in several states
across America to impact greater
numbers of struggling military
families.

tive Heroes and to donate, visit

The Camden County Freeholder Board
appointed members to its recently estab-
lished Addiction Awareness Task Force to
assist it in promoting awareness, education
and resources.
The task force is made up of students,
parents, teachers, civic organizations, med-
ical professionals, public health providers,
law enforcement and religious leaders
just to name a few said Freeholder Direc-
tor Louis Cappelli, Jr. We did not limit
who comprises the task force since this is
an issue that touches every area of our
community.
The freeholder board appointed 14 indi-
viduals to the task force by resolution at
its meeting on Aug. 20 in Winslow Town-
ship.
Earlier this year, we held a summit to
address the scourge of heroin and other
drugs that are ripping apart our families
and killing our residents, Cappelli said.
As a result of that community gathering,
we received more than a dozen resumes
from individuals interested in becoming
members of the task force and taking on
this epidemic.
The task force will be charged with in-
creasing awareness of prescription opiate
and heroin abuse and addiction, aimed at
reducing the demand for heroin and pre-
scription drugs. They will also assist in the
creation of programs to help educate resi-
dents of the resources available to prevent
and treat addiction, and support the devel-
opment of additional resources to end the
abuse of heroin and prescription drugs.
The task force members will serve as li-
aisons to state and local community aware-
ness groups as well as non-profit groups
and drug addiction service providers,
Cappelli said. As an elected official opiate
addiction is one of my biggest concerns.
Heroin and opiates have become a grow-
ing public safety and health crisis creating
devastating effects on the region, the state
and the nation in the last five years. These
narcotics are ubiquitous in every commu-
nity in Camden County and usage is on the
rise. In a two-hour period in March this
year the county saw 15 heroin overdoses.
As a county we know that no one is im-
Haddonfield resident appointed to county task force

N
ew Jerseys trial run if you
can call it that with red light
cameras didnt go so well. For
drivers who ran red lights, it went
swimmingly, but for the state not so
much.
Last week, word came down that
some drivers who were caught on cam-
era running red lights were never in-
formed of the fines they faced because
of a technical glitch in the system. The
state Judiciary, as a result, asked local
courts to throw out the infractions all
17,000 of them.
In New Jersey, red light camera in-
fractions result in an $85 fine, but no
points on a drivers license. At $85 a
pop, thats $1,445,000 in lost revenue, all
because of a technical glitch from a
company that supposedly specializes
in this.
State lawmakers are angry, and
rightfully so.
Said Assemblyman Declan OScan-
lon, of Monmouth County: These
companies incessantly tout the sup-
posed accuracy and consistency of
their systems when the only thing
consistent about the camera company
representatives is their blatant misrep-
resentation of what the equipment
does and how accurately it does it.
People make mistakes, but this is a
big mistake by American Traffic Solu-
tions, which runs half of the states in-
tersections with red light cameras.
Lets just switch to the other compa-
ny that runs our red light cameras,
you might say. Well, the CEO of that
other company, Redflex, was just in-
dicted on federal corruption charges
for allegedly bribing Chicago officials.
Not to mention, a former Redflex exec-
utive also accused the company of pay-
ing bribes to government officials in 13
states, including New Jersey.
Seems to us that these red light cam-
eras, or at least the companies that
were hired to run them, need to be re-
moved, or at least replaced. Theres no
sense in paying for a service thats ei-
ther ineffective or, worse, possibly ob-
tained through illegal means.
We in New Jersey do enough wrong
ourselves that we dont need an outside
company to come in and screw things
up for us; were plenty good at that our-
selves, thank you very much.
The contract for red light cameras
expires in December, and it would be
best if the state didnt renew the agree-
ment, not until it studies its full results
and finds a new company or two to pro-
vide the service.
in our opinion
State should red light cameras

Special collection days protect

the environment
Each year, Camden
County residents keep
more than 400,000
pounds of hazardous
material from the
county waste stream by
participating in our
Special Household
Waste and Electronics
Collection Program.
These convenient drive-through disposal
sites are held several times a year through-
out the county.
The next Freeholder-sponsored House-
hold Hazardous Waste Collection Day will
be held on Sept. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. at the Pennsauken Landfill, located at
96000 River Road in Pennsauken Town-
ship.
We all can do our part to keep the envi-
ronment healthy by bringing oil-based
paints, solvents, thinners, pesticides, her-
bicides, gasoline, kerosene, polishes, pho-
tographic chemicals, automotive batteries,
antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid,
other car products, pool chemicals and
cleaning fluids for disposal.
This program provides one of the easi-
est and most convenient ways for all resi-
dents to chip in when it comes to creating
a better environment for us all. It is a pri-
ority of the Freeholder Board to provide
this service to residents. By disposing of
this material properly we keep it out of our
waste stream and prevent it from making
its way to our waterways.
On Sept. 27, we will have our next
Household Electronics Collection Day.
Drop off your outdated and unused items
from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Camden
County Public Works Complex, 2311 Egg
Harbor Road in Lindenwold.
From televisions to computers, many
products that used to be solid waste are
now E-waste and can no longer be put
curbside to be picked up on trash day.
State law prohibits mu-
nicipalities from picking
up these items in the
curbside trash, so this is
the perfect opportunity
for residents to properly
dispose of unwanted tel-
evisions and computer
equipment. Recycling
these items will prevent
harmful materials such as lead, mercury,
cadmium and chromium from being re-
leased into the environment.
Items that will be collected at no charge
include: computers, keyboards, VCRs,
scanners, DVD players, tape players, mon-
itors, stereo equipment, typewriters, print-
ers, TVs, laptops, modems,
telecommunication equipment, fax ma-
chines, adios, answering machines and
telephones.
With such rapid advancements in tech-
nology, Im sure there are residents out
there with electronics piling up multiple
computers or phones for example. If you
bring those items to this free event, every-
thing will either be refurbished for future
use or recycled to help protect the environ-
ment.
For a complete list of what to bring, and
for upcoming recycling events, visit
www.camdencounty.com.
In addition to this special collection, the
Camden County Pollution Control Author-
ity collects electric waste at the
Pennsauken Landfill weekdays from 7:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
If you have any items that are in ques-
tion, please call the Division of Environ-
mental Affairs at (856) 858-5241. If you
have any other questions about County
services, please call me at (856) 225-5466, or

U.S. Drug Enforcement Adminis-
tration as a main hub for heroin
distribution in the Mid-Atlantic
states.
New Jersey data shows a
steady rise in prescription drug
abuse in recent years. There were
8,300 admissions to state-certified
substance-abuse treatment pro-
grams due to prescription drug
abuse in 2012, a 200 percent in-
crease over the previous five
years, according to the task force
report.

Haddonfield Plays & Players
presents An Inspector Calls by J.
B. Priestley from Thursday, Sept.
11, through Saturday, Sept. 27.
In 1912 England, the Birling
family hosts a lavish dinner party
to celebrate their daughter's en-
gagement.
A knock on the door brings a
determined police inspector, in-
vestigating the death of a young
girl.
What starts as an evening of
celebration in a close-knit family
steadily deteriorates as the in-
spector continues his probing
questions.
As the night wears on, the
stunned family begins to unearth
secrets that slowly unravel the
mystery surrounding the girl's
death.
But it is only after the inspec-
tor leaves that they discover the
final twist in the tale.
J. B. Priestley's classic thriller
of mystery and suspense is a
timeless ghost story that asks
many more questions than it an-
swers.

been and to try to come to a fair
resolution as quickly as we can.
Andrew Berlin, vice president
of the Board of Education, spoke
before the citizens comments,
first complimenting the teachers
and saying how much the board
values them before explaining the
process of the negotiations and
their mid-August meeting with a
mediator that lasted until 1:30
a.m. However, a settlement was
not made at that time.
All I can say is that the board
is very interested in being able to
move forward quickly and are
very, very willing and looking for-
ward to continuing, Berlin said.
Parents at the board meeting
wished for a speedy conclusion as
well, asking for the contract to be
settled before school starts on
Sept. 3, as they are concerned this
will affect their childrens educa-
tion negatively. Parents are fear-
ful the teachers focus will be not
on education, but on how they
will make ends meet along with
other issues.
I am asking you, both sides, to
settle this quickly because I dont
want to see this as a distraction
throughout the year because I
know it can become a distrac-
tion, said Kelli Colflesh, a moth-
er of three Haddonfield Middle
School students who is a teacher
herself. Im the middle man. I'm
a parent. I live in the district. I
know my taxes eventually are
going to go up, but I know what I
am getting by paying these taxes
and living in town. You get what
you pay for. And what I am get-
ting for my kids is quality educa-
tion, and I want these teachers to
stay.
Colflesh believed the small
turnout of parents was because
many are not aware of the con-
tract negotiations.
I dont think people are really
aware of it. I am a teacher myself
and I was not aware, said
Colflesh, who learned about the
expired contract earlier in the
day.
After all parents had spoken,
Jennifer Gallogly, a first-grade
teacher for Central School, spoke
on the behalf of the teachers.
We are asking for a fair and
equitable contract similar to our
peers in districts like ours. That
is the real truth. And even though
we continue to outperform every
district in this state, except for
Chatham, you continue to punish
us, when in fact we should be re-
warded, she said. We would
never treat your children that
way. Shame on you school board,
shame on you.
With that, the teachers all
stood up and walked out of the
meeting. After they left, David
Siedell, a member of the Board of
Education, commended the
board.
I want to say thank you to the
committee that continues to nego-
tiate with the school. I think it is a
challenging environment, and I
think you are doing great work,
he said. And the comments there
aside, I don't think that you have
anything to be ashamed of. I
think that you are all working
very hard to find an equitable and
honorable settlement for both
sides.
After the meeting, Berlin and
Superintendent Richard P. Perry
explained that the negotiations
are making progress. They said
they, too, are hopeful for a good
conclusion and would like it as
much as anyone else.
This negotiating team, board
of education, has been extremely
committed and willing to settle
into this contract. We have a lot of
talented and caring people on this
committee, Perry said. And just
as the teachers have been show-
ing their passion, the passion is
also on the other side of the table
with the board's committee. They
are just as passionate, and we
care about the school district, and
the teachers and the students.
And we want to settle this as soon
as possible, too.
The next board of education
meeting will be held on Thursday,
Sept. 11. If a contract is not
agreed upon by then, the HEA
will once again be there and they
are asking for more people to sup-
port a settlement.
At the Sept. 11 board meeting,
we are doing quite a bit more.
Knowing that it is the summer
and Labor Day weekend, a lot of
people aren't necessarily here. So
the Sept. 11 meeting, we'd like to
particularly have people there be-
cause pretty much our entire
membership will be there, Welsh
said. I think there will be a lot
more information and happen-
ings on that particular night.
We're trying to get some people to
bring a little bit more to light.
In other news:
Haddonfield Memorial High
School was ranked as the second
best in the state in New Jersey
Monthly magazine and ranked
238 out of more than 27,000 high
schools in the nation.
The opening day for teachers
is Tuesday, Sept. 2, and for stu-
dents is Wednesday, Sept. 3.
The district has hired 28 new
faculty members, who were visit-
ed by Mayor Jeff Kasko at their
new teacher orientation.
