Rally Day
Sunday School Promotion Rally Day
will be held on September 7. The theme
is Celebrate Son-day School! All chil-
dren, youth, adults and Sunday School
Teachers are to meet in the sanctuary at
9:30 a. m.
10 Reasons
to bring your child to Sunday School
While sleeping late can be nice, have you considered the benefits of
Sunday School attendance for your child? Here are 10 reasons to
make it a priority in your family.
1. Age Targeted Teaching: Where else can your kids get Biblical instruction
thats focused toward their developmental abilities?
2. Friends: In Sunday School, your child will build positive
friendships with their peers by discovering Gods word together.
3. Its Fun: Sunday School is not Disney Land, but our teachers do work hard
to teach the Bible in ways that are relevant and fun for kids.
4. Spiritual Mentors: A dedicated teacher can be a Christian role model who
supports you and helps inspire the faith of your child.
5. Systematic Bible Learning: Our curriculum is designed to give a broad
foundation, so children will understand how all of the parts of Scripture
point to Christ.
6. Praying Teachers: Our teachers consistently pray for your childs faith to
grow. Coming to Sunday School gives another occasion for God to answer
those requests.
7. Big Reward For a Small Investment: If youre already coming to church,
just come a little earlier. That one change will equal over 800 hours of
additional Christian teaching before your child graduates.
8. Send the Right Message: Making Sunday School a priority shows your
kids that Gods Word really does matter more than pillow-time
9. Adult Bible Fellowship: While the children enjoy their class, you can
fellowship with other adults in your own Bible Study Group.
10. Youll Be On Time: Families who come to Sunday School always get to
worship on time. Its the easiest way to avoid being late!

Are You Looking for a Circle of Friends? A Small Group May Be the Answer.
Here at Denbigh United we have several Small Groups and are eager to start more. A Small
Group is a group of 6-12 people who meet weekly or every other week for Bible study/discussion,
prayer, fellowship and service. Deep and abiding friendships can grow in these groups as believers
study Gods Word and support one another.
Our existing groups are listed below. If you are interested in an existing group or in being a
part of a new group, please contact Deborah Dail or Tim Jacoby.

Sunday evenings (every other week) from 6:30-8 p.m. This group meets at the church and
childcare is provided. The facilitator is Kristi Spivey, and the group is currently studying
Managing Life. For information, call Kristi at (757) 814-9538.

Sunday evenings (every other week) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. In September, the group meets
September 14 and 28. This group discusses state, national and world current events in the
context of the Presbyterian faith. This group meets at the home of Dale and Keith Pennell.
For more information, contact Dale Pennell at (757) 303-7762.

Monday evenings (every week) at 7:30 p.m. This group meets at the home of Tim and
Debbie Jacoby. The group is discussing Whats So Amazing About Grace? For more
information, contact Tim Jacoby at (412) 720-4808.
Adult I Sunday School Class
The fall quarter begins September 7 at 9:15 in the Conference Room. Jay
Dunn will be teaching this class. Hope will be our study theme with readings
in Jeremiah, Habakkuk, Psalms, Job, Ezekiel, and Isaiah. All adults interested
in Bible study are welcome to come.

Ladies Discussion Group
This group is studying Spiritual Discipline. If you are interested in joining us,
please contact Amy Schmidt at ahschmidt50@yahoo.com. This class meets at
9:15 on Sunday mornings in the Parlor.
Living as a Committed Christian in the
Kingdom in the 21st Century Class
The Discussion Group on Living as a Committed Christian in the 21st Cen-
tury led by Mike Langrehr continues to meet in the Library. No books, no
reading, just a discussion of local and world events from a Christian perspec-
tive.

THRIVE Peninsula formerly
D.U.C.O. (Denbigh United Christian
Outreach) is in critical need of food
supplies. Each week the need is
greater than the week before. We
thank you in advance for all of your
support. You may bring your food do-
nations to church and place them on
the kitchen counter where they are
picked up and taken to D.U.C.O. each
week.
JUST A
REMINDER

Articles for the October Digest are due in
the office by 9:00 a.m. on Monday, Sep-
tember 22. Any announcement you wish
to have in the Sunday bulletin must be
called in, emailed, or delivered to the of-
fice by noon on Thursdays with the ex-
ception of the summer months (June,
July and August) when the deadline will
be Wednesdays at noon.
THANK YOU !
Did you miss a recent Sunday at church and
wish you could go back and hear the sermon, or
maybe you were there and are just trying to
remember what was said? Well fear not, you are
in luck! Just go to our website
www.denbighpres.org, look on the left side for
2014 Sermons, and find the Sunday you may
have missed. There are both audio and text
versions for most sermons, which you can
download or stream online. Also, a full
recording of the entire service can be obtained if
you make a request through the church office.
Older sermons are archived and can also be
made available if you are looking for a particular
one as well.

Thank you to Ken Bowers for developing the schedule again this year.
As some of you may know, DUPC conducts a Monday morning worship service at The Gardens
at Warwick Forest four times a year. Please join us on September 29 at 10:00 a.m. for the next
services. The Gardens is a Riverside Hospital continuing care facility. Depending on their physi-
cal condition, those in residence may attend the chapel service or watch the live televised program
from the comfort of their rooms. This month, over twenty DUPC members participated in the
worship service as greeters, in singing, as comforters, and in general support of this outreach. It
is a true blessing to see the impact we have on those who may not otherwise have a worship ex-
perience. Are you interested in helping? Participation in this rewarding effort is made easy.
Come and sing, greet, pass out bulletins, or act as a worship leader. For information, please call
Rusty Norton at 757-814-1091 (C) or send an email to rustynorton@denbighpres.org.
Blessings to all, Rusty

ously helping THRIVE Peninsula feed our neighbors in need via its pantry ministry.

Distribution of Second Presbyterian Church Contents
When SPC and DPC merged to become DUPC we were charged with the task of emptying out SPC.
We put considerable thought and prayer into deciding the best methods of distributing the contents of
our church. With the approval of our Session, this is how we proceeded.

We prepared a list of historical artifacts and memorabilia we would like to transfer to DUPC.
This was accomplished with the aid of the aesthetics task force.
We met with various DPC committees to decide which items could be used at DUPC.
We offered members of SPC the opportunity to acquire items not moved to DUPC. Written
requests were submitted. Members were asked to make a donation to DUPC when they
acquired an item.
We met with Bruce Robinson who marked items that he would like to see moved to Haiti.
Those that were not needed at DUPC or chosen by SPC members were set aside to be sent
later to Haiti.
Some items were needed by local groups and charities, such as Thrive Peninsula. These were
distributed before the yard sale.
The remaining items plus items donated by church members were sold at a yard sale on July
26
th
. The profits, $2,740.43, were placed in DUPCs Operating Fund.
All remaining items were picked up by the Boys & Girls Club Thrift Store.
We thank all those who have helped in this process. We strove to make the best decisions for all indi-
viduals and groups. Many individuals from both DPC and SPC worked many hours behind the
scenes. It is with great sadness that we leave our church, but we are grateful for the warm reception
in our new church.

Our 2014 Haiti Mission Team re-
turned safely on July 21. While in Haiti,
our six-member team of Sandi Mu-
rawski, Dawn Moss, Vicky White, Ma-
son Murawski, Anneliese Collins and
Deborah Dail led two Bible Camps at
Myet and Raymond. A total of 18 chil-
dren professed faith in Christ at the Bi-
ble camps. Thanks to the generosity of
the DUPC family, all the children at
both Bible Camps received breakfast
and lunch each day of the camp. Ap-
proximately 120 children, plus helpers,
received the nutritional meals.
Thank you for supporting the
team financially and prayerfully. The
team members will share their experi-
ences in an upcoming worship service.

Thank you to all who supplied food and others for the money to buy some of the items.
Enough money was collected to also donate seven $10.00 gas cards to the clinic. Some of
their clients dont have gas money to get to the clinic. Much appreciation to Janet and
Bill Morrison and Peggy and Don Harvey for buying, picking up, heating and delivering
the meal to the clinic!

Our Summer Outreach Ministry began on June 30 and ended August 29. On
Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week, our team ministered to 2025 chil-
dren by having reading and math enrichment classes, recreation, life lessons, and
field trips. Each day the children received a healthy lunch here at church and a bag
lunch to take home for the following day. Our Summer Outreach Ministry team
would like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers who tutored, provided leader-
ship to children, transported the children to and from church, prepared lunches
served here and the bag lunches. We know that the lessons learned in our ministry
will help to carry our children successfully through the coming school year.
Local Mission Outreach Families & Pauls Ministry
We would like to thank all who donated school supplies and money. Your generosity
enabled us to help 27 children with school supplies from Kindergarten, Elementary,
Middle and High School. Thank you so much for your support to help these children
to have the materials they need to get a good education.
Many Blessings, Connie Ames Hunt
Preschool News

Its time for the new school year to begin, and it has been quite a
summer! The Boy Scouts have been hard at work on our playground get-
ting it ready for the children and it looks beautiful!

Our new students will have their first day of school on September 8.
We currently have openings in our 2 year old class and in our 4 day and 3
day 4 year old classes. If you know anyone who might be interested in
one of these classes, please share our information.

As the new preschool director, I am looking forward to this new ad-
venture. I hope you will have the time this year to stop by for a chapel
program or one of our other special events, like the Halloween parade.
The children are sure to put a smile on your face and I would love to meet
you!
Tammy Castagna, Preschool Director

Playground Beautification

Kindergarten through 5th Grade students are studying from a new curriculum called Grow, Proclaim,
Serve! Each child will come to know the wonders of God's love with lessons from the Bible.

Unit 1- In the Beginning ~ Psalm 104:24
Lord, you have done so many things! You made them all so wisely! The is earth is full of your crea-
tions!

Unit 2-Beginning of God's People ~ Psalm 100:3
Know that the Lord is God-he made us; we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his own
pasture.

Unit 3- Hope for God's People ~ Jeremiah 29:11
I know the plans I have in mind for you, declares the Lord.

Middle and High School classes will be studying Picture This!
See the Word come alive in pictures!
We are providing Childrens Church for students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Children will be
excused from the sanctuary after the childrens sermon. Parents are asked to pick up children from
room 5 after the worship service. Students will learn about worship, engage in worship and learn a
Bible lesson. Volunteers are needed for this ministry to continue on a weekly basis.

Faith Weaver Friends is our Wednesday night Children's Ministry at Den-
bigh United Presbyterian Church. Faith Weaver Friends begins September
17 at 5:45 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.

The evening will begin with a Gathering Time in the Sanctuary followed by
dinner. Then we will break into age-appropriate groups for activities.

The cost is $15.00 per child for each term. If you have more than one child
involved, the other children pay only $10.00 for each term not to exceed
$30.00 per family. Scholarships are available.

We still need some volunteers to help set the tables between 2:00 and 4:00
p.m. and we also need drivers. If you can help in anyway please contact
Liz Marshall at 757-877-2048.

Bullying protection???

It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of
attack or intimidation by other students.
(Source: National Education Association.)

1 in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying.
71% of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school.
(Source: makebeatsnotbeatdowns.org)

If you are concerned about bullying make sure to attend a panel discus-
sion presented by the Peacemaking Committee of the Presbytery of Eastern
Virginia. Different aspects of the issue will be discussed by a police officer,
a psychiatrist, a school principal, and a minister. In addition, there will be
break-out sessions to explore ways to address bullying as a faith-based com-
munity.
The panel discussion is Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 8:30 A.M. -
3:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, VA. You can find
registration and more in-depth information online at the PEVA website.

you for the food, cards, visits and everything
else you have done for us.
