The Right to not be

tortured or treated
inhumanly
By Jamille and Emma
Article 5
Article 5 dictates that all humans should not be
subjected to cruel or inhuman punishment or
torture of any kind. It also dictates that no human
should be subjected to degrading treatment.
The UN General Assembly thought it was necessary
to include article 5 into the universal declaration of
rights because humans should not be subjected to
any kind of torture or inhumane punishment from
other living humans.
Violation of Article 5
Here are some examples of violations to article 5.

USA in 2008, George W. Bush, authorized the CIA to hold 270 prisoners in
Guantanamo Bay, in Cuba. The prisoners didnt receive a trial, and were
tortured by Water-Boarding which simulates drowning. They did this
despite its violation of international law.

Darfur Physical violence and abduction are rampant with aid from other
countries cut off. Women were the main targets of unrestrained assaults,
with over 200 rapes in displaced persons camps. There was no effort made
by the authorities to punish the attackers.

DRC (Congo)- Acts of torture and violence are regularly committed by
armed groups and Government security services. These acts of injustice
include beatings, stabbings and rapes of the victims in custody. In 2007 the
presidential guard and special services police division captured and
tortured several victims labelled as critics of the government.
Historical violation of article 5
The Holocaust is a major example of violating article 5
of the universal declaration of human rights.
1933 to 1945 is when World War 2 occurred, in this
time the holocaust took place. In this time over 6
million Jewish people were tortured and killed and
many more sent to concentration and death camps.
The abusers were the Nazi Party and others who
joined in to hurt and kill the Jewish people. The
aftermath of the holocaust concluded of many Jewish
people with diseases and malnutrition . The Jewish
were haunted by what they had seen, what they had
to do, who they lost and feared to return to their
former homes, where they were taken.

How does article 5 relate to our
society now?
Article 5 relates to our currently society by the justice system we
have and the laws we have in place to make sure we dont violate
article 5.
In Australia we make sure that article 5 is not violated by having
free speech and not being tortured or murdered by the
government. Everyone gets a trial. We have a democracy, so no
one gets abused if they speak out about our government. The
leader of Australia cannot decide who lives and who dies in our
country. Everyone gets to vote, women and men. And it is illegal
to commit a crime against someone because they are a specific
race, have a specific religion and because of their gender.
