Early Christian
Historical background
A rapidly growing number of romans rejected polytheism in favor of monotheism but they did not stop
commissioning works of art.
Christians were persecuted minority in the Roman Empire. They were concerned by the growing
popularity of Christianity in the roman army.
Since the early Christian lived in a highly cultured age, it was perfectly logical that they should have
taken advantage of current trends in the figural arts and use them to express their own religious and
spiritual aspirations.
