A report on the July gathering.
Another excellent evening of music at Bijou. The club is for all levels of ability. It is for
beginners in jazz and seasoned players. It is the place to gain the necessary experience of
playing in a live situation. Also, the guitar is such a visual instrument and a lot of knowledge
can be gained by watching more experienced players and observing fingerboard patterns,
i.e. chord and improvisational devices. When I first took up the guitar I would travel
anywhere to watch and listen to guitar players in the hope I could pick up something by ear
or visually! There is always something new to learn!
Our friends from the Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society were with us again, Adrian Ingram
and Darren Dutson-Bromley and they got the evevning off to a good start. With Dave Turner
on double bass they played "Lady Be Good", "Blusette" and "Close Your Eyes".
With some great solo guitar Dave Faulkner was up next and he entertained us

with rendisions of "Moon River", "Georgia" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me".

The evening continued with a few jazz standards by Ray Brooker and Tony Cordes and they
played "Mitch's Lament", a tune composed by Herb Ellis, "After You've Gone", "Who's Sorry
Now" and "Out Of Nowhere". Next up were Kev Taylor-Cox accompanied by Darren
Dutson-Bromley and D T on bass and they played "Night In Tunisia" and Yardbird Suite".

Next Tony Cordes joined me with D T on double bass to perform a few jazz standards.
(Tony is an extremely fine Freddie Green style player who can really swing). We played

" Girl Talk", "I Thought About You" and "Time After Time". Curtis Yolp then joined me in a
duo to play Wes Mongomery's "Four on Six" and Jerome Kern's "Yesterday". Curtis
then played a solo rendition of "The Girl From Ipanema".
To finish a very musical evening Adrian Ingram was joined by Dave Faulkner with Darren
on bass guitar, (an Asbory bass which has silicon strings and a very short scale), and they
played "Blue Bossa" and "Tenor Maddness".

My thanks to Keith Foddy for some of the photos.
My apologies if I've left anyone out.

Review of Jack Wilkins Birthday Party at the

Fellow Guitarists Fete Jack Wilkins at 70th Birthday Bash
A true guitarists guitarist, Jack Wilkins got a little help from his friends in the six-string
community at a memorable event at New Yorks Jazz Standard on July 1, organized by
promoter and guitar aficionado Charles Carlini, in celebration of Wilkins 70th birthday
(which actually fell on June 3).
An inveterate swinger whose fluid, single-note lines, rhythmic comping style and
imaginative chordal approach have distinguished his playing since his days in the Buddy
Rich Orchestra during the early 70s, Wilkins is a master of shimmering arpeggios and
ringing harmonics, a technique pioneered by the late Lenny Breau. While his fretboard
prowess is on par with his celebrated contemporaries such as Pat Martino and Larry
Coryell, aged 69 and 71 respectively, Wilkins has stayed under the radar in terms of
audience recognition since the release of his debut record, 1973s Windows (Mainstream).
He remains highly regarded within the inner circle of elite jazz guitarists, seven of whom
were on hand to honor their talented colleague on this special night.
Wilkins kicked off the proceedings in a trio setting with bassist Andy McKee and drummer
Billy Drummond, performing a boppish take on Out Of Nowhere and a gorgeous Stars
Fell On Alabama. Howard Alden next brought out his seven-string guitar to join the trio on
a romp through Charlie Parkers Confirmation that brought out the shred factor of both
guitarists.
The quartet then left the stage to make way for Gene Bertoncini, whose brilliant,
harmonically advanced rendition of Laura on nylon-string acoustic provided a cleansing
breath after the pyrotechnics of Alden and Wilkins.
The biggest surprise and triumph of the evening was the first public performance by
guitarist Joe Diorio since a stroke in April 2005 that left his entire left side paralyzed,
including his fretting hand. Through sheer willpower and daily rehabilitation, the 77-year-old
guitarist has learned how to walk again, and use his arm and hand. Miraculously, he was
able to not only play a sublime rendition of Stella By Starlight in an intimate duo setting
with his young protg and right-hand man, Christopher Morrison, but also delve into some
daring melodic invention on the standard.
Before playing, Diorio told the audience, All the guardian angels are not in heaven. Theres
one here tonight and I wouldve never made it without hermy wife, Tina. He also offered
this humorous aside: I cant play as fast as Jack or Howard. I think they take a little

something to play that fast, if you know what I mean.
Diorio caressed each note of Stella like a starving man who suddenly found himself
seated at a banquet. Following his heartfelt performance, the guitarist received a standing
ovation from the packed house.
Returning to the burn, Wilkins and Jimmy Bruno went toe-to-toe on an uptempo rendition of
All The Things You Are, with sax-like chops ablaze (Wilkins playing Jimmy Raney to
Brunos Billy Bean). Aside from their respective hot solos, the two great guitarists created
beautifully interwoven contrapuntal lines that caused emcee Carlini to announce after the
tune was over, Thank you Jimmy and Jack for that rendition of Ode To Bach.
Kindred spirits John Abercrombie and Vic Juris followed with an adventurous rendition of
Alone Together that featured a brilliant bass solo from McKee. Larry Coryell then joined
Abercrombie and Wilkins for the swinging finale, How Deep Is The Ocean, which
culminated in rapid-fire exchanges of eights.
For the second set, Harvie Swartz replaced McKee on bass, joining Drummond and Wilkins
for Taking A Chance On Love, a gorgeous, harmonics-laden Heres That Rainy Day and
a rendition of Christopher Cross Arthurs Theme (Best That You Can Do), with Wilkins
throwing in Wes Montgomery-styled octaves.
Diorio was even more expressive on his one featured tune in the second set, and Bruno was
incendiary alongside Wilkins on There Will Never Be Another You, which featured more
exhilarating exchanges of fleet-fingered eights at the tag.
Abercrombie and Juris turned in a delicious version of Yesterdays that had the latter
blowing over the changes with masterful abandon.
The audience was packed with guitaristsJerome Harris, Kenny Wessel, Amanda Monaco,
Sheryl Bailey, Rez Abbasi, Joe Giglio and Bobby Rose, whos famous for his collaborations
with Martino. All rose as one to cheer on the birthday boy during this rare six-string summit.
Bill Milkowski.

I've included it again as I feel it is a very important
subject.
GUITARISTS! BE GOOD ACCOMPANISTS!
by Trefor Owen
CHORD KNOWLEDGE IS ESSENTIAL FOR GUITARISTS OF ANY STYLE!
There are many aspects to becoming a complete jazz guitarist.
The guitarist as an accompanist is an important but sadly neglected one.
There are many points of view on this subject, but whatever your viewpoint one
thing has to be remembered and that is:

"What is your playing situation at the time"?
e g Are you playing in a quintet or quartet consisting of two harmonic
instruments, (piano and guitar or two guitars), bass and drums?
Are you playing in a quartet where the guitar is the harmonic main-stay?
Are you playing in a duo, (guitar & sax or two guitars)?
EACH SITUATION MEANS THAT YOU HAVE TO ADAPT TO WHAT IS REQUIRED AT
THE TIME!
The following is my overview of the Art of Accompaniment.
The guitar, like the piano, is a harmonic instrument, and is used extensively not only as a
solo voice but, because of its harmonic nature, as a means of accompaniment.
When playing in a Jazz quartet, (e.g. horn, guitar, bass and drums), the guitarist for most of
the time will be playing chords, thereby accompanying. The guitarist in this situation is the
harmonic mainstay of the band. Guitarists in general have a weakness in this area. The
number of hours spent practising accompaniment, compared to single line technique, are
few.
To become a good accompanist, the guitarist must develop the ability to play a good four in
the bar rhythm, (Freddie Green style), which for today's player is almost a forgotten art. I
believe that every guitarist should be able to create a solid pulse. In doing so you are
dealing with time. Time is a very neglected area of music.
To play four in the bar correctly and make it swing takes a lot of patient practise!
Also, if you are a beginner in jazz, your facility will probably limit you to playing no
more than four in the bar rhythm!
Having the ability to create a pulse by playing even time, i.e. knowing the value of a quarter
note, (crotchet), is not only important to the accompanist, but also to the soloist, as knowing
where the underlying pulse is means you can correctly divide and sub-divide time into
eighth and sixteenth notes etc. Because of the percussive nature of the instrument, this is
an area where I believe guitarists have a weakness, but is another subject.
Some guitarists are good line players but poor chord players. It is important for each area
of study to develop evenly, (parallel studies). A good practice procedure will allow this to
happen. Imagine a giant jig-saw puzzle with pieces spread out all over a table. Each piece
is an area of study. The object is to create a complete picture, but if one piece is missing
this cannot be achieved.
The art of accompanying is often best achieved through simplicity. Occasionally a chord has
to be played to maintain the nature of the melody or to create a desired effect, therefore an
extended or altered chord is adopted, but more often than not the bare essentials (triads)
are all that are required.
I have several studies relating to the Art of Accompaniment, please see my website
www.treforowen.com.
