The International Reading Association celebrates International Literacy Day on September 8 with its Lift off to Literacy campaign.
http://www.reading.org/international-literacy-day-2014 3 A Tribute to Virginia State Reading Association Past President Dr. Betty H. Yarborough passed away August 13, 2014
Betty Yarborough helped to establish the Virginia State Reading Association in 1968, and became the first president. Dr. Yarborough served as president of VSRA from June 1968 to March 1969. In 1988 the Betty Yarborough Award was established to recognize councils with exemplary membership growth. During 24 years in Chesapeake Public Schools as a teacher and administrator, then more than 20 at Old Dominion as a professor of elementary education, Dr. Yarborough was a sympathetic friend to all, young or old, who had trouble reading or spelling. Yarborough first gained national and even international attention in 1967, when she used a $1.5 million grant to found an experimental elementary school in Chesapeake that was not divided into grade levels and that did not issue letter grades. Children of some limitations, she said, did better in the non-graded environment. After coming to ODU in 1972, her research in reading and spelling gained national attention. She led workshops on the subjects across the nation and co-authored a series of childrens books on spelling. Yarborough founded the Center for Adult Illiteracy, which over a period of about three years helped more than 150 adults read. She retired in 1992, yet maintained an office on campus where she continued to help troubled readers and spellers for many years.
The Exemplary Reading Program Award is sponsored by the International Reading Association to recognize outstanding reading and language arts programs at all grade levels (elementary, middle, and high school). Its purpose is to call the publics attention to outstanding programs in schools throughout North America. Virginia can choose one winning school. The program has five objectives: (1) to improve literacy in our society, (2) to recognize school staffs who demonstrate excellence in reading and literacy programs, (3) to encourage the development and refinement of exemplary reading/language arts programs, (4) to report to the public noteworthy efforts to improve reading/language arts, and (5) to disseminate specific information about high-quality programs so that other professionals can use it to improve their own instructional efforts. 1here are many ouLsLandlng readlng programs ln our area, and Lhe Lxemplary 8eadlng rogram Award CommlLLee would love Lo revlew appllcaLlons and vlslL schools so LhaL we could present the award during next years VSRA Conference in Roanoke. The Shenandoah Valley Reading Council has enjoyed partnering with local Habitat organizations over the past few years. At the time of house dedication, SVRC provides a bookshelf and age appropriate books for the children moving into their new home. This summer Harrisonburg Mennonite church joined our love of promoting reading and has donated some very special items to our next waiting family. As part of their Bible School program the children raised money to provide books for 3 children and helped take part in the building of 3 bookshelves. One for each child. Now we wait for the house to be complete and then can present the family with these gifts. If your school or church would be interested in a Habitat project of books and bookshelves please contact Lisa Roeschley at lroeschley@rockingham.k12.va.us
