Mutual Recognition of Credits with the University of Cincinnati
An opportunity to earn two Masters degrees typically in one year
for students admitted to the Postgraduate Scheme in Engineering in 2014-15

The Postgraduate Scheme in Engineering (Pg Scheme) of PolyU is actively working with the
University of Cincinnati@ for an arrangement on mutual recognition of credits. Under the
proposed arrangement, students joining the Pg Scheme in 2014-15 can apply to enroll
concurrently for a Master of Engineering (MEng) programme offered by the University of
Cincinnati. The tentative arrangement is outlined below.
(a) PolyU is the administrative host of this mutual recognition of credits scheme and
students interested in this scheme need to apply to the University of Cincinnati
through PolyU. In September 2014, the Pg Scheme will nominate applicants to the
University of Cincinnati based on their first degree or other equivalent qualifications. No
GRE is required. The minimum English language requirement for admissions to the
University of Cincinnati is as follows:
(i) A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 for the Internet-based
test, 550 for the paper-based test, or 213 for the computer-based test; OR
(ii) An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing
System (IELTS), OR
(iii) the equivalent qualifications.
(b) Successful applicants are expected to study a minimum of 5 subjects (i.e a total of 15
credits) in PolyU and a minimum of 6 subjects (i.e. a total of 18 credits) at the University of
Cincinnati and both universities will recognize the credits earned from their counterparts
(subject to satisfying a stipulated level of attainment). The shortest period for completion
of the two awards is one year. Typically, a student can study 5 subjects at PolyU in the
first semester and then another 6 subjects at the University of Cincinnati in the Spring
semester.
(c) Upon completion of a total of 11 subjects, and subject to satisfying the academic
regulations of the universities concerned, students can qualify for two masters degrees;
one from PolyU (MSc) and one from the University of Cincinnati (MEng) in the following
disciplines. Both degrees are recognized by the Ministry of Education in China.

(d) The University of Cincinnati will award the MEng degree to the students who satisfy their
graduation requirement, which is typically some required subjects and up to 4 subjects
completed at the PolyU Pg Scheme with a grade of B or above. Students do not need to
obtain the PolyU MSc before they qualify for the MEng degree from the University of
Cincinnati. Likewise a student can obtain the PolyU MSc degree by studying 5 subjects at
PolyU and credit transfer 5 subjects from the University of Cincinnati, irrespective of
whether he/she has obtained the MEng degree from the University of Cincinnati.
(e) Tuition fee paid for subjects taken at the PolyU Pg Scheme is based on the number of
credits taken. In 2014/15, the tuition fee is HK$4,000 per credit or HK$ 12,000 for a 3-credit
subject for non-local students. While the tuition fee for one credit is US$ 1,285, the flat fees
for up to 18 credits in any one single semester at the University of Cincinnati is US $7,886.
In case the Capstone project is extended to the Summer Semester for students who join the
University of Cincinnati in Spring, no addition tuition fees will be charged for the
Capstone project. In addition to the afore-mentioned costs, students have to pay for the
accommodation, health insurances and other daily expenses during their stay in the
respective universities. For details of the up-to-date costing required at the University of
Cincinnati, applicants can find it from http://financialaid.uc.edu/fees/costs14.html.
