Motorola WBC 700 Portfolio

Resilient. Intelligent. Innovative. And enabling profitable

mobile broadband services
2
A new era in the telecommunication landscape has begun. Your new core
network is different from a few years ago. Subscriber growth means increased
data bandwidth and increased throughput. Value added service applications
mean lower latency, increased security and unmatched Quality of Service levels.
The Evolved Packet Core (EPC) is central to achieving this change; it is the core
network architecture of the 3GPPs LTE standard, which is an evolution of todays
core network. Motorola has engineered and integrated core networks across
multiple technologies, delivering true carrier class performance for the worlds
leading telecommunication operators.
Best-of-Breed Core Architecture
Motorola Wireless Broadband Core 700 (WBC 700) is an award winning best-of-
breed EPC portfolio that enables operators to deliver unmatched reliability, control,
capacity, services and security for the next generation mobile broadband network.
The portfolio comprises the industrys leading mobility management entity
(MME) with enhanced hardware acceleration, advanced session preservation
techniques and embedded security core. The multimedia gateway (GW) is an
intelligent, high performing platform, with distributed architecture, advanced
in-line services, and high availability software techniques. The gateway platform
simultaneously supports todays 2G and 3G GPRS Support nodes (GSN) and LTE
on the same node. Motorolas innovation and product leadership are recognized
in the market place with the following awards:

Lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through product
design and advanced innovative features
Superior Performance: The WBC 700 MME and Gateway deliver superior
performance and industry leading capabilities. Exclusive ATCA design with
hardware acceleration for processing enables increased performance and
throughput. The MME, with a scalable capacity of up to eight million subscribers
and support for 32,000 eNodeBs, is the market leader. The Gateway platform, with
its purpose built distributed architecture, delivers superior throughput capacity.
Common Platform: The WBC 700 Gateway platform simultaneously supports
SGSN, GGSN, S-GW and P-GW. This multi-technology approach allows operators
to meet and exceed todays network demands, with a platform ready for LTE. This
approach also simplifies the core network while reducing OPEX and CAPEX costs.
Scalable and Flexible Architecture: The WBC 700 platforms are purpose built
with distributed architectures for increased scalability and flexibility. They support
a wide range of subscriber data traffic models and operator deployment options
with full redundancy and support for future expansion.
Integrated IP Services: The WBR 700 Gateways integrated IP security capability
significantly reduces overall costs by eliminating additional expenditures for
peer-to-peer detection, content filtering, stateful firewall, intelligent traffic
management and load balancers.
The WBC 700 Gateway simplifies configuration and management, while
increasing service reliability with intelligent services across the network.
Drive revenue growth though reliability and advanced
traffic analysis
Optimized Subscriber Experience: The MME uses a 32-way multi-threaded
packet processor for protocol processing and multi-core blades for session
processing. These features facilitate optimized signaling architecture for highly
parallel streams of IPSEC and Stream Control protocol associations for end user
broadband sessions. The WBC 700 Gateway deploys a mix of high performance
processors and a powerful switch fabric to optimize performance by distributing
processes across all system resources.
Intelligent Packet Classification and Quality of Service (QoS): The WBC
700 Gateways QoS features ensure operators can enable policies to control
subscriber sessions on a per-subscriber/per flow basis. This allows billing based
on class of service, subscriber type, and/or content type.

Six Nines Availability: In addition to standard full hardware and software
redundancy, the WBC 700 Gateway employs high availability software
techniques such as session recovery, fault containment, and state replication
to maintain continuity of service and excellent user experience. Its Inter-Chassis
Session Recovery feature and software delivers 99.9999% reliability against
chassis failure. The WBC 700 MME supports 100% preservation of active
sessions and greater than 90% preservation of process messaging transactions
by leveraging Motorolas advanced packet processor foundation.
Maximize CAPEX investment through future proof technology
and design
The WBC 700 MME leverages hardware acceleration components by
incorporating all necessary future capacity related hardware into the interface
and shelf card, allowing the platform to double its capacity with a single payload
blade upgrade. This allows for easy support of Evolved Multicast Broadcast
Multimedia services (E-MBMS) and complete fixed and wireless convergence.
Network Evolution
The Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN) alliance (which consists of
operators, analysts and infrastructure vendors) identified limitations in current
technologies and recommended LTE as the technology of choice to achieve
higher data throughputs, lower latency and improved quality of service (QoS).
With LTE, operaters can introduce new types of services and establish new
revenue streams to enable a profitable mobile broadband business case.
The 3GPP Release 8 standard for LTE/SAE introduces a core architecture with
a separate data (user) plane and control plane. This separation mandates two
distinct sets of technical requirements for the network.
Control Plane This requires significantly more processing power than
is available in todays core products. In the control plane, the Non-Access
Stratum (NAS) protocol runs between the MME and the UE and is used for
network attachment, authentication, setting up of bearers (PDP contexts) and
mobility management. All NAS messages are ciphered and have their integrity
protected by the MME and UE. These processes, which are not present in
todays networks, increase the processing requirements of the core network
by a factor of 3.3x.

Bearer Plane The LTE E-UTRAN aims to support average subscriber
data rates in the region of 30Mbps with reduced user plane latency of
less than <5ms. This means new challenges for todays core platforms.
Key requirements include support for high throughput, high bandwidth
applications and a larger subscriber base. The platform also needs to support
advanced IP services which are vital for security and traffic management on
the network.
Todays 2G/3G platform, upgraded via software to deliver LTE, will suffer
throughput performance issues and capacity reduction, due to processing
demands for session, protocol and security requirements. Operators need to
deploy a platform that is optimized to deliver the requirements of the LTE control
and bearer planes in order to achieve the true value of LTE and profitably deliver
compelling services and experiences to their customers.

Prepare for LTE
Motorolas WBC 700 Gateway platform simultaneously supports SGSN, GGSN,
Serving and Packet Gateways. It also supports the Evolved Packet Data Gateway
(ePDG) for Wi-Fi access. Deployed today, it offers operators a true
4G-ready platform, increasing current network capacity, throughput and
performance while being fully ready for LTE. Its integrated advanced IP services
also mean operators no longer require additional servers for load balancing,
firewall, packet inspection and content filtering, thereby reducing equipment
footprint and cost of ownership while increasing network capacity.
Core Network Overlay
By deploying a full EPC architecture through the introduction of IP and Motorolas
WBC 700 Gateway platform, an operators move to full LTE is simpler and smoother.
Motorolas MME platform easily integrates into the core network with full support
for all 2G, 3G and CDMA core network functions, and its hardware acceleration
techniques and advanced chipsets provide operators with a true 4G platform.
Motorolas EPC solution supports MME pooling area and complete
independence between MME and Serving Gateway Pooling (as specified in
the standards) as well as identical MME and Serving Gateway Pool boundaries.
The concept of pooling enables the configuration of multiple platforms to work
together and share resources when responding to subscriber demands. This
introduces flexibility, network redundancy and a more efficient architecture.
