Course guide for Comm 380 (Advocacy and Social Mobilization) during the first term of academic year 2014-15 at the University of the Philippines Open University
Welcome to COMM380, Advocacy and Social Mobilization course. We will
discuss here contemporary principles in and approaches to advocacy and social mobilization in a changing social environment.
In this course, you will have the opportunity to explore the theoretical foundations of advocacy and social mobilization. You are also expected to gain a clear understanding of the contemporary approaches to advocacy and social mobilization programs and movements, both from the point of view of public and private enterprises.
Specifically, at the end of the course, you should be able to: 1. Examine and articulate the theoretical foundations of advocacy work and social mobilization movements. 2. Discuss how advocacy and social mobilization activities and work might be employed as intervention strategies to meet community needs, create new service delivery systems, and promote social and economic justice. 3. Demonstrate knowledge and skills required in assessing social problems and applying appropriate approaches in mobilizing community interest, opinions, and action in the solution of community problems.
We started the course by looking at concrete examples of advocacy and social mobilization at the global/international and local scope. This approach is in recognition of the fact that you are all engaged in various professions with communication as a major component and you are now grounded on communication theories having taken COMM310 course. You can look at these examples from a critical perspective and even use them to construct your own understanding of advocacy and social mobilization. As we go through the course content, listed below, go back to the two examples and try to situate our discussion in these examples.

I. Class Reporting and Participation in online/academic discussions (30%) This will simulate what we know as class reporting which I am sure many (if not all) of us has had the chance of experiencing when we were in residential instruction. Each student will be assigned a module to report (Please refer to the reporting assignment in a previous section of this course guide). As indicated in the Schedule of Activities, each Module will be allotted one week to start on a Saturday. Assigned reporters will have to post/upload their reports on Day 1 (Saturday) of the reporting week. Reports can be in the form of powerpoint presentation (with notes per slide); video presentation; text with multimedia supplements/hyperlinks.
The report should contain the following: " the relevant concepts covered in the module; " the application of the concepts in the two examples initially discussed (ice bucket challenge and the Yellow Boat of Hope) to concretize your discussion " a personal reflection on how the concepts can be applied to ones context/situation
Other members of the class (Non-reporters) can ask questions, comment, seek clarifications, or even add to the reports by citing additional examples. Reporters will have to answer the questions/clarifications or react to the comments given by fellow learners.
Grading: Reporters will be graded based on the quality of the report and the responses made to the questions/requests for clarifications raised by fellow learners. Non-reporters will be graded based on the quality of discourse. When I say quality, these are the indicators: a. The discourse reflects understanding of the concepts/lessons under discussion b. Reference to literature review in presenting your arguments c. Organization of ideas in the write-up/post and grammar (Concise)
II. Implementing an Online Advocacy and Social Mobilization Program (40%) This will be a class activity.
Discuss among yourselves a social concern which can be a topic of your advocacy and social mobilization program. It can be a concern in one of your organizations, the advocacy part for which can be done online. Take note in the selection of the topic/concern to be addressed, the advocacy and social mobilization program should be considered as intervention strategies to meet !"#$%&'#() +, (-% .-#/#00#"%' 10%" !"#$%&'#()
2014-2015_1 Course Guide COMM380 % community needs, create new service delivery systems, and promote social and economic justice. I will open a Discussion Forum for this purpose under the Virtual Kapehan.
Launch/develop a Facebook site for this and populate with information/communication materials you seem relevant for the campaign/advocacy. Be specific as to what action (mobilization) you want the public to do e.g. the Donation and Ice Bucket Challenge and the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation.
