Reasons of choosing the company: The company of my choice is The Raconteur by Maverick where the deal with content and advertising regarding social media channels. On why I chose this company is because it deals with photo and video content but in a totally different perspective. The new style of communication has intrigued me and I would love to explore the different demand of media strategy in social media. Digital advertising is blossoming and internet and social media is the main to channel this artistic art of photo, video and other content. The other reason is Raconteur from Maverick has different perspective in getting their idea and final product done. They use storytelling in conducting their campaign. The main service in Raconteur is analyse the social media image of a company then coming out with strategy and plans in form of story and proceeding with the campaign.

Training Session: Raconteur basically has two main offices which are situated in a residential area. The old office is situated at Jl.Balitung and the new office where Im placed is situated at Senopati. Both this location is within walking distance incase the employees has to travel between offices. Great thing about the office is that it is a semi-D house where the company is trying to create a more relaxing environment for the worker. The interior design of the house is similar to a working space which consists of the main hall, the library, the employees office, a kitchen, a lounge and the manager office. There are several rooms around in which I was staying in one of them. It is very convenient for me to be punctual for my working day. The office also uses natural sunlight in the day to lit up the office as there is a glass roof to allow the sunlight to come in. The homely office setting allows the employee to be more relaxed thus increasing the productivity as well. Below are some of the pictures:
Orientation: The first day for me was relaxing as they showed me around the office and things I can do or use in the office. The IT specialist set up my laptop to the internal server of Maverick where all the projects and work is done in the server in self. Im also given the password for the internet to use during and off office hours. Nia, the associate, gave me a brief introduction on how things work here and the upcoming projects that would need my assistance. The immediate project was to shoot interview video from the recruit program and the edit it to upload it online in the website. I am also briefed about the upcoming project as well. I got to know all the other staffs in both the office. James Norris is my mentor and he as well described the work Ill be handling such as infographics, designing magazines, web development and video designs. Physical Facilities: As I said earlier the office is placed in the house so all the basic facilities is available. The internet is available 24 hours and there also space for employees to relax while doing the work. The library is small and after all its about quality not quantity. The books are relevant to the job description that we have here. Books on marketing, public relation, graphic design, journalism, social media, web design and other is available to read. The employees that deal with creative work mostly work on their laptop and its done via offline in the server. Exchange of information is done through local area network. The desktop is used by employee that does the administration work. The ease of using our own laptop is convenient as we can bring our work load home incase there is near deadlines. The office tables and chair is designed in a minimalistic way to increase the space around the office. The kitchen is equipped with the kitchen ware where the employee can use to prepare their lunch incase we need to stay back for work during lunch time. Raconteur deals with project mostly online and on the internal server so there is not much physical facilities here.
My Resources: I am allowed to use all the facilities in the office which is relevant to my work and my work station is my laptop. The IT specialist as I mentioned earlier set up my laptop to connect on the local area network where in can connect with the Maverick server to catch up with the project and my task. I am also given a table for myself beside James so that he would be able to monitor me and incase I have any doubts, I can always refer to him for help.
Job Specification: As stated in my contract I would be working under both Jonathan Tenggara and James Norris. I will be assisting James on the infographics, magazine, poster and graphic preparation for projects. Besides that, I will prepare video design for project and event that need video production. I will also be participating in campaign organized by Raconteur dealing with the social media aspect of the projects.
Work Details: The work details and flow will be presented in my log book. The task and work done is briefly explained. The various task and work is listed and explained.
Favorable Aspect of Work: The relaxing environment is definitely my favourite aspect of this work. The home office is certainly a great solution for effective productivity. Less stress equals to higher productivity and job can be done by the dateline. Besides, having a weekly meeting on every Tuesday to monitor on progress, the employees also discuss their work and progress through the Facebook and Twitter. This update is in real time and convenient. Proper schedule is given to me for the upcoming projects and task that I will be doing and this will ease the preparation that I need to make daily. The other aspect is that the manager would allow the creative department to have creativity freedom whereby we are not contained but to deliver the work with our input. Brainstorming session is also done before any project to fork in ideas from staffs and other designer. Although I am lacking skills in Photoshop, my supervisor James Norris is always there to answer my question he also delegate task to me based on my current level and allow me to give my input in certain project and based on improvement, more graphic project is given to me to handle. What I love about working at Raconteur is that they treat their interns as their own employee as they trust us to complete clients projects and this is definitely a good challenge for me. Lastly, Im glad that they believe that I could help out to handle both the internal and clients projects as well. Overall View: My training session in fact close to what Ill be doing in the new future. The company I chose is exactly the working environment that I would like to be in. Designing videos, photos and other media on daily basis is in favour with my prospect in the future. The new era is closely related to the new communication era and its closely related to the work that Ill be doing thus ensuring the demand in this field. Raconteur deals with the social media for the clients and comes out with method and strategies for their client for their sale or campaign. In the mean time, there would be a need to prepare media content and that is the time my supervisor will be involved. Posters, banners, photos, flyers, magazines, video promo, interview, montage are just some of the media content that requires our department to handle. My supervisor will prepare a proper schedule for me a give task according to specific timetable and project datelines. Coping up with clients dateline is one of the important aspect in my working area and working in Raconteur as helped me in learning how to planning and get task done before the dateline. In Raconteur I deal with poster, banner, videos and other media content and Im very happy to able to give my creative input. Overall Im able to do my passion as my profession. Here, I also learn the importance of intellectual property and methods to protect ones works, something that I taken grated for years. It is important to copyright every work or project that has my creative input in it. In college, thing was in theory and during my intern Im able to apply the theory and modify it to suit the working environment. The working pace in Raconteur is fast and I had to cope with datelines. My supervisor really helped me out by briefing and brainstorming before we get into the projects. Training Session Analysis: Training session in Raconteur has definitely made full use of my college knowledge. Having to take subjects like PR communication & process has help me know briefly about the PR elements about a company and at Raconteur I manage to have an in-depth look on how PR in the real world really works. Although I was being stationed at the creative department in Raconteur, I manage to see and learn few things about how Raconteur handles the PR for their clients through social media. It is true that the next big channel to communicate PR is through social media such as Facebook and Twitter and working in Raconteur showed me the evidence on how social media PR plays a role for a company. Learning television broadcasting in class has taught me the theory aspect in the technical skill in producing a work. Taking initiative to see how video editing software, effect and graphic design has definitely paid off as I was able to cope with the project that has been given to me. Im glad that I was able to handle the work as I have some basic knowledge on how these softwares work. New Comm. Tech is another subject that when along with my internship process whereby in school and I learnt about web layout, HTML and designs. I had several projects where I have to do a content analysis for a website. Last but not least I think Business Comm is fairly an important class subject that Ive done. It is very important for us to know how to communicate in industry and ways and methods to have communication.
Working in Raconteur opened my eyes in seeing not only the good thing in Media & Communication but also the problem faced in this industry. One common problem Ive seen from my previous part time job and here is that people in the creative department is not specialised in just one area. There is no doubt that multi tasking is a way to go but a videographer cant be a good photographer and vice versa. It is important for employees in creative department to have specific knowledge and with that come collaboration. Collaboration among a specialised team can produce a better workflow and a single person that does everything. Another problem that I witness is this area is the production part of a creative process is taken for granted. For instance if a project contents a creative work, the person that is being involve to produce the content must be present in the meeting with the client. This to help the designer to also listen to what is being expected and how much freedom of creativity can the designer have to producing the content. Besides, another common problem would be lack of tool. A company that is involved in production in multimedia has to be fully equipped with current technology to cater the pace of production these days. Budget of the company has to take multimedia equipment into account when planning. Lack of tools equals to lack of good end product.
In Raconteur, I faced problem such as lack of equipment and lack of workforce in the creative department. Currently there is only one graphic designer and videographer. When ask to shoot a video montage for one of their internal program The Recruit and Anugerah, I had problem such as insufficient batteries, cameras, tripod and lighting. As I said earlier the creative department is sometimes taken for granted. I think companies has to invest in equipments in order to produce a good content especially company that are not fully a production company. It is important for event or PR companies to have a multimedia centre to deal with project that content video and graphics .It can be poster, banner, corporate video, promotional video, documentation video archive and many other useful contents for the clients.
As I mentioned earlier that I had to shoot a video montage for one of their programs and an external project to shoot Anugerah something video documentation, I faced two problems. The two problems are lack of good equipment and workforce. After some planning and discussion, I managed to convince Raconteur to shoot montages using the DSLR camera as it producing high quality video in a low cost. For both the shooting, I used my camera and another Canon DSLR owned by the photographer in Raconteur to record interview, shoot montages and the discussions. Raconteur also managed to get me sufficient batteries and memory card because the only downfall in DSLR shooting is its data keeping and battery power. As for the sound recording, we had an external portable recorder. I also requested to have another employee to tag along with me to handle the data storage for the video to ease the editing process later. As result, we shot the whole two projects using only 2 DSLR cameras, a tripod, 3 memory card and few extra batteries. It was a huge success as the end video quality came out good compared to the previous videos they have done. Raconteur was very happy with the end video as its was a big improvement for their project in term of video shooting. The video was suitable for both archiving and web content. It was uploaded in YouTube and their website page. I am also happy to able to share my ideas and solution during the process on this project. Raconteur also concluded that they would start using DSLR camera to shoot their next video and there has been plan to have a studio just for the creative department in the near future. It is a great step for Raconteur to also focus in their creative department to give their client a full solution in their PR strategy that requires creative content.
Evaluation: Working in Raconteur even though it is only for a short period of time definitely tough and equipped me with knowledge and experience. I would take my training in Raconteur as a crash course where I learnt a lot of new methods and workflow and apply it in my task to a very short period of time. Being able to absorb new method and guidance in a short time has definitely prepared me for the real working experience because the fast pace of this industry in real life situation. The two main elements that equipped me are the polished skills and knowledge in creative software and better exposure to working environment. Throughout my training in Raconteur digital creative division, I was being exposed to software and workflows that uses tools such as Adobe Creative Suites, cameras, print technology and social media itself. The training helps me in terms of using the software in a way that would save time if there is any short timeline for a project. Learning the shortcuts in Photoshop has definitely taught me to get simple projects done fast. Under the supervision of James, I was able to ask him any question I wanted and Im glad that he always gave me a simple solution how to fix a problem. Another experience I learnt in this training experience is never be afraid to ask or making mistake. The only way for getting a better understanding in using certain software is to make mistake and ask questions. Having a different view from another person is would make a design less monotonous and has more vibrancies. A teams idea is always better than a single mans idea. I use Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and Photoshop on daily basis and I found the best way to be professional in this software is to use it and practice. In this month long of using the software, can definitely see improvement in my skills and thanks to the guidance from the creative team, Im able to learn more. The second important element I learnt is the exposure and demand in the industry. Almost all of the projects that Ive been doing demand a very short period of time. In reality clients can be nice and some of them might not be nice to you, but as a professional, we have to learn to take criticism and continue to improve ourselves. Deadline was one of the hardest things to cope in this industry. People are expecting you to finish video and creative content in short period of time and it is very challenging and sometime I had to stay up late just to finish the projects. The importance of planning and executing a video project for a short period of time is a valuable lesson that Ive learnt in this industry. I also learnt various design and web application procedure and method. Participating in their brainstorming session gave me an inside on our generating ideas functions in a creative team. Its about collaboration and thinking out of the box. The cultural difference was also a challenge for me as I had to learn what was allowed and was is not and surprisingly, Indonesias media is much more mature in term of transparency. Lastly, this training has been useful is building my confidence and maturity in dealing with people and my work. In college and I learnt to be punctual and I admit I have made some mistakes here and there but in the working industry, there is less room for mistakes. I am glad that I learnt to be punctual and effective during my training there and I hope the testimonial letter from my supervisor will portray my contribution and hard work for their creative team. I am now more confident knowing that I can blend in with different culture and work together with them to complete an objective. Coping with client and working with colleague as a team to finish a project I the best part of this training. I would recommend any of the new students in Stamford Media School to try working with the Raconteur. I am very happy and never regretted my decision to do my training in Jakarta. It was an eye opening internship where I manage to learn what the outside creative industry demands and how to cope with a completely different environment. Im proud to say that Im much more matured in how I approach and make my creative decisions. One would learn more when getting out of their comfort zone and I did that and never regretted the decision I made.
