thismightbejustaboutthelowest.
9.VisitAPaedophilicWebsite
Theinternetisadarkandscaryplace;weallknowthat.GrandTheftAutoIVsingameinternetis
nodifferent,asevidencedbythiseasteregg.Youwillfindtheabovescreenattheingamewebsite:

completed one of two ways; Subtle or Obvious. Subtle sees the group enter the Depository in
Securicars before escaping in Gauntlet vehicles as a reference of sorts to The Italian Job. The
Obviousroutetasksyouwithblowingaholeinthevaultbeforeflyingitoutwithahelicopter;its
quitethespectacleanditsstillnoteventhegamesfinalmission.Whenallissaidanddone,the
gangsplitsahugepotofmoneyandgoesonwiththeirlives(presumablyleadingtomoretheft,
crimeandkilling).StealingsuchavastquantityofgoldwilldefinitelyhaveputTrevor,Franklinand
MichaelontheFIBsradarbutontopofthattheresplentyofcountsofdestruction,murderand
speedingticketsrackedupinthismission;frankly,themostimportantthingthishighlightsishow
incompetentSanAndreaslawenforcementis.
7.SleepWithAProstitute(ThenBludgeonHer
ToDeath)
ThesecondmissioninGrandTheftAutoIIIhasyoupickingupaprostitutenamedMistythentaking
herbacktoanightclubSexClub7.Itsfairtosaythatfromthispointonwards,everythingabout
gamings perception changed. Prostitutes have since been featured in every single Grand Theft
Auto game; theyre as important to the series as cars or guns. Picking one up in a car and then
slinkingofftosomewheredarkandquietwillcausethecartorockwhileyourcharactershealth
increases;theresnothinggraphicbuttobefair,youdontreallyneedit.Ofcourseprostitutionis
illegalbutyoucancontinueyourspreeifyousowish.Afterthetransactionhasbeenmade,the
prostitutewillgoonhermerryway,butkillingherwillcausethemoneyyouvejustspenttoappear
makingherservicesfree.Feelfreetodosoinbroaddaylighttooasthepolicewillveryrarelycare
unlessitsdonerightinfrontofthem.Despiteneverbeingarequirement,killingprostituteswas
probablyGrandTheftAutosfirstmajorcontroversy.IteventuallyledtothegamesbaninAustralia
(ViceCitywasalsocensoredinthecountryasaresult)andtheserieswillforeverbedefinedinthe
masspublicseyeasThatGameWhereYouSleepWithProstitutesAndThenKillThem.Rockstar
seem to have embraced this too; the mature content in their games has increased dramatically
(whocanforgettheHotCoffeescandal?)ashastheirsales.Justdonttrythisathome.
6. BecomeADrugDealer
Drugs are fairly common in the GTA universe but Chinatown Wars for the DS upped the ante
considerablybyfeaturingdrugdealingasaminigame.Theressixdifferentdrugstopeddle(heroin,
coke,ecstasy,acid,weedanddowners/depressants)anditssurprisinglyindepth;certaingroups
willpayahigherpriceforonedrugwhilesellinganotheratalowerprice;buyingfromonegang
and selling to a different one just makes good business sense. Often your dealings will be
interruptedbythepolice,leadingtoatwostarWantedlevel.Theresactuallyawaytodecrease
thischancethough;destroyingthemanyCCTVcamerasthroughoutthegamewillhelpkeepyour
sidebusinessworkonthesly.Youcanalsoaddthefttoyourrapsheetbystealingdrugvansand
plunderingthemforvaluablelootitturnsoutthatdrugdealersarealotlikepirates.Naturally,
this feature stoked controversy in the mass media; many antidrug charities spoke out about
Rockstarusingnarcoticsasentertainment,therebyglorifyingthem.HowdidRockstarrespondto
this?Theyclaimedthattheyactuallywantedtointroducedrugdealingintotheseriesearlierasit
wasanotherlayerorpieceofthepuzzletokeepyoumotivated.
5.DrinkAndDrive
Liketherestoftheworld,yourGrandTheftAutoprotagonistsliketogoouttoanicebarandget
absolutelyslaughtered.InSanAndreas,drinkingwasstrictlyfordatesaloneandtherewerenoside
effects.GrandTheftAutoIVwasthefirstgamewheretheplayerscharactercouldgetdrunkandit
resultedinsomehilariousmoments.Thecameraswaysaboutasyourcharactertripsandstumbles
around;theeffectworsensdependingonwhoNikohasbeendrinkingwith.Naturally,beingaGTA
game,controversyliesaroundeverycorneranditspossibletogetintoacaranddrivewhiledrunk.
Niko,beingtheresponsibleguythatheis,willremarkthatitsnotagoodideaButwillthengo
aheadanyway.Drivingwhiledrunkisincrediblydifficult;yourvisioniscompromisedandthegame
willactuallysteeryourcartowardsthenearestsolidobjecttoencourageyoutocrash.Ifthepolice
seeyouinthisstate,theyllbeafteryou,escalatingthesituationconsiderably.Thedrinkingeffect
islessenedwithGrandTheftAutoValthoughTrevorcanoftenbefoundintoxicatedinvariousparts
ofSanAndreaswhenyouswitchtohim.AnotherofRockstarsheroesMaxPayneisanalcoholic
too;Imnotcertainthatusingbullettimewhiledrunkisactuallyacrimethough.
4. TortureAnInnocentMan
Aswevealreadyseen,Rockstarisntafraidtooverstepthemarkbyamile.InGrandTheftAutoV,
Michael,TrevorandFranklinhavetodealwithacorruptFIBagentnamedSteveHaineswhoseeks
tosabotagetheInternationalAffairsAgency(aparodyoftheCIA)tosecuremorefundingforhis
owndepartment.HemakesourtriobreakintotheIAAbuildingtokidnapaterroristsuspectnamed
FerdinandKarimovbeforereappearinglatertohandTrevorandMichaelanothermissionturning
into GTA Vs most controversial so far. Its fair to say that torture is a muchdebated subject.
Rockstarevidentlyfeelstronglyaboutthesubjecttoo,whichiswhyGTAVfeaturesanunskippable
segment where Trevor tortures Karimov (now referred to as Mr.K) to gather information about
anotherterroristsuspect.Theresfourdifferenttorturemethodsavailable,andtheyreallpretty
brutal.YoucanwaterboardMr.K(thismethod,morethananyother,isprobablyintendedasadig
at the U.S Government), you can takeawrench to his knee, arm or genitals, you can shock him
withacarbatteryoryoucanextractatoothfromhimusingpliers.Uptofourroundsoftorturecan
be undertaken in this mission (you can simply kill Mr. K to end the mission quicker) but youre
forcedtoatleastgothroughtworounds.Perhapsworstofall,itturnsoutthatMr.Kisactuallyan
innocent man who simply did some home theater work for the terrorist suspect that Haines is
searching for. Trevor opts not to kill him at the conclusion of the mission (though this is only
becausehedoesntlikedoingwhathestold)andinsteadtakeshimtotheairportandtellshimto
leavethecountry.Bitlatefortheniceguyactthough,Trevor.Thismissionhasbeenwidelypanned
forglorifyingtortureandutilisingitforentertainmentpurposes;withRockstarssatiricalintentions
simplygoingtoofarforthemajorityofplayers.

3. BrutallyMurderSomeoneWithAChainsaw

In all honesty, this entrycould just be entitled Anything In Manhunt. Easily Rockstars most
controversial franchise (and really, as weve already established, thats saying something),
Manhunt is a psychological horror game centred around executing enemies stealthily. To put it
bluntly,theseexecutionsarehorrific.Fromsimplestabbingstoclubbingpeoplearoundthehead
withahammer,everyexecutionisbloodyandviolent.Gamersandgorefiendslovedit.Themedia
didnt. The games finale sees protagonist James Earl Cash confronting antagonist Lionel
Starkweather with a chainsaw; naturally, it ends pretty gruesomely as Cash proceeds to
disembowel and behead Starkweather to close the game (if youre not squeamish, check the
footage above). Its incredibly brutal and even now (what with all the death and gore we see in
games, films and television shows), its pretty shocking stuff. According to former Rockstar
employee Jeff Williams, even staff members felt like the game was way overboard. Various U.S
politicianscondemnedthegameforteachingkidshowtokillwhileothershighlightedthehypocrisy
incriticising Manhuntbutnototherformsofentertainment.IntheUK,acopyofthegamewas
seized as evidence in the murder trial of 14 year old Stefan Pakeerah (although it was later
exoneratedofanyresponsibilityforthetragicdeath)andfollowupManhunt2wastwicerefused
aclassificationfromtheBBFC.Foronemomentintime,merelyowningacopyofManhunt2could
havebeendeemedillegalinitself.
2.BeATerrorist
Afreeroamgamewithplanes,bombsandweaponswillalwaysdrawsomecomparisonstoreal
lifeterroristevents.SetthatgameinacitythatresemblesNewYorkandyouresimplymakingit
easier for people. Rockstar has always been criticised for encouraging terrorism in their games
(afterall,youdoplayassomedespicablehumanswhoonlyseemtowanttoheapmiseryanddeath
upon others). However Grand Theft Auto IV was written off by some as a terrorist simulator,
simplybecauseLibertyCityisdesignedtoresembleNewYork.GrandTheftAutoIIIalsohadcontent
cutfollowingthe9/11tragedy;anentirestoryarcfeaturingabossnamedDarkelwascutbecause
of the terrorist nature of his missions (one involved driving an ice cream van around to attract
pedestriansandthenblowingitup).HasagechangedRockstar?Nope.GrandTheftAutoVsmost
controversialmomentcomesfromtheaforementionedmandatorytorturescene,thoughthiswas
more tohighlight the U.S Governments treatment ofterrorist suspects, rather than as a way to
genuinely terrorise people. Of course, Rockstars content could be completely innocent; its the
playersandthecommunitythatwillfindwaystoruinit.AquicksearchthroughGoogleorYouTube
willshowyoureenactmentsofvariouseventsorpeoplesimplygoingonmurderspreesforthe
sakeofit.Againthough,youcouldapplythattonearlyeveryfreeroamgamethesedays;Rockstar
pridethemselvesonofferingupablackmirrorthatreflectspeoplesdarkestdesiresbutitsthe
gamerwhohastotakealook.
1.TieInnocentPeople ToRailTracks
GrandTheftAutointheWildWestmightnothavesoundedlikeagreatideaforagamebutRockstar
absolutelynaileditwithRedDeadRedemption.Itlookedbeautiful,itplayedgreatandthestory(a
taleofredemption,surprisingly)wassuitablyepic.Oneofthekeyfeaturesofthegameinvolved
John Marstons lassowhich he can use to capture andhogtie villains for ransom. Of course, this
being a Rockstar game, you can also hogtie innocents and thats where it all gets a bit murky.
With cars and planes being a rarity back in 1911, horses and trains provide the games main
transportation.Ofcourse,wheretherearetrains,therearetraintracks,andinRDRyoucangofull
stereotypical muahahaing villain and tie someone to them, before sitting back and watching
thetrain decimate everything. If you want to feel extra villainous, try growing a handlebar
moustache and twirl it while laughing manically. Weve already established that Rockstar are an
incredibly wellthoughtoutdevelopment team though; surely they wouldnt encourage this sort
of trainrelated havoc? On the contrary, Red Dead Redemption has an Achievement/Trophy for
hogtyingawoman(yes,itevenspecifiesthatitsawomanforextravillainpoints)tothetracksand
watchingherexplodeintonothing.ItsaptlynamedDastardly,bytheway.Ah,thegoodolddays
oftheWildWestsun,sandandhorrificcrimesagainsthumanityeverywhereyoulooked.
