Youd be forgiven for thinking youd seen everything Bethesdas frozen masterpiece had to offer
beingitsbeentwowholeyearssincetheinitialrelease.Butwiththatbeingsaid,weallknewwhen
exploringthegamesvastlandscapesthattherewerebitsandpiecesweweremissingalongthe
waythatoverarchingfeelingthatyoudneverseeeverythingtheworldhadinit.Featuringoneof
the best missiongenerating gameplay systems ever put in an RPG, Skyrim has always cobbled
together random interactions for the sake of making you visit far off locations you didntrealise
had something worthwhile to offer. However, this time round weve put together a list of
sightsyoull have to seek out yourself, as theyre the ones that would only make themselves
knownaftereveryinchofthegamehasbeenthoroughlycombedover.Everythingfromoldschool
gamereferences,moviequotes,fairytalesandrealworldfolkloreispresenthere,withthefeeling
that even after youve read whats contained within theres probably still something else out
there nobodys found yet. So don your Daedric armour and dive back in, as we challenge even
thosethathavealreadyputmanyhundredsofhoursintothegametonotbesurprisedatwhats
hidinginthefarthestcornersoftheland.
16. DragonbornInWonderland
Starting off with one of the most common references but only if you were able to locate The
MindofMadnesssidequest.LocatedinsideSolitude,asyoujourneyintothedepthsofPelagius
mind youll find many esoteric and off the wall lines of dialogue, but the most striking visual
accompaniment to the whole thing is when you come across this little Mad Hatter tribute.
Featuring food thats actually edible and a Sheogorath character who talks only in barely
understandablejibberish,youcanhangoutinthislittleareaforquitesometimebreathingitallin
beforecarryingonwithwhatyouresupposedtobedoing.
15.TheMinecraftMt.EverestPickaxe
Startingoutwithoneofthemosttalkedaboutsecretsinthegame;notbecauseofitsverynature
as a tuckedaway collectible, but more because it relates to an eery real life story. You see,
theNotchpickaxethatsleftstickingoutthetopoftheThroatoftheWorldmountainisadirect
referencetotwothings:FirstlythecreatorofMinecraftMarcusNotchPersson,whoalreadymany
willrememberpushingtheiconicMinecraftpickaxeintopopcultureasastapletoolintheseries.
Secondlythough,manythinktheNotchedPickaxeisinreferencetoclimbersGeorgeMalloryand
Andrew Irvine who went missing when scaling Mt. Everest back in 1924. Although Irvines body
waseventuallyrecoveredin1999,Malloryremainsmissingsomewhereupinthehillswiththe
only remnant of their combined efforts being a pickaxe stuck in the side of the mountain. Very
spookyindeed.
14.Pac-Man Lives!
BetyoudidntexpecttoseeoldpizzafaceinSkyrimhmm?Youcanactuallycreateaversionofthe
abovesceneyourselfifyoureadabhandatrearrangingobjectstorepresentPacManchasinga
line of yellow pellets. However, if you travel to Endons House in Markarth youll find the above
foodstuffslaidoutinsuchawaythatitcanonlybeanodtotheoriginalpillmuncherhimself,albeit
inafarlessanimatedstatethanthenatural2Dversion.
13.StarTreksWideArms
AsyoudexpectthecrewofgameprogrammersatBethesdaaremostrighteousbunchofnerds,
droppinginareferencetothemechaofallthingsgeekular;StarTrek.Itsonethatonlythemost
devotedoffanswillunderstandduetoitsotherwiseobscurenature,butweresuretheintention
wasinthere.So,ifyoutakethetriptoIvarsteadsInnyoullcomeacrossoneTembaWideArm,a
large lady whos in need of your help. However her name is actually derived from a certain Star
Trek:TheNextGenerationepisode,whereanancientraceofaliensregalethecrewwithastory
aboutTembawithhisarmswide.Ofcoursethesimilaritiesendthereasyoullbeofffighting
bears in no time to help her out of her predicament, which is definitely not something the
Enterprisecreweverhadtodealwith.
12.TheRoomOfDeath
Hiddendeepunderground,awayfromallthedragons,mammothsanddemonsisaweirdrave
likeroomfullofhalfnakedbodies.Asyoudo.Okaysothisoneiskindofterrifying,especiallywhen
yourealisethatallthebodiesinsidethisplacearenotablecharactersyouveprobablytalkedtoor
been on a quest with. However, rather than appear here as they were in the main game theyll
havehadalltheiritemsunequipped,floppingaroundnexttoyouinwhatcanbecomeanentire
seaofbodiesifsomanyhavediedinthemaingame.ThisluxuryisonlyaccessibleonthePCversion
ofthegameasyouneedtotinkerwithsomecommandprompts,buttobehonestarentyouglad?
Ifyoudsomehowstumbleduponthisplaceinaregularplaythroughitsenoughtomakeyourun
forthehills.
11.SnowWhiteAndTheSevenDwarves
Timeforsomefairytaleadventuring,andclearlysomeoneatBethesdawasaSnowWhitefan,being
that if you head to Blackreach and then to the War Quarters youll come across seven beds all
encirclingasmallflame.Inadditiontothis,thechamberleadsthroughtoamuchlargerbedonthe
connecting side, completing the reference. That being said though, why create this reference in
the dank aquariumesque surroundings of Blackreach? Its about as far as you can get from the
otherwisewhimsicalnatureoftheoriginalfairytale.Stillcool,though.
10.KingLeonidasSlain Sabre-ToothCat
Provingthatthereferencesherearefarandwide,Bethesdaincludedoneto2006Spartanfuelled
actionromp300, being that if you head west of Karthwasten and go halfway up the mountain
youllcomeacrossthisslainsabretoothtiger,laidtorestinbetweentwootherclifffaces.Sadly
youllhavetodoafairbitmoresearchingtocomeacrossalivingtigertodobattlewith(orgetyour
face mauled off in the process), but in addition theres also a skeleton of who we assume is
supposedtorepresentKingLeonidasjustinfrontofthefallencreature.Althoughhesdefinitelyin
muchworseshapethanhewasinthefilm.
9.LordOfTheReferences
Thousandsof usfeltaLOTRsizedtwingewhenchoosingsidesandtakingthefight toeitherthe
StormcloaksortheImperialsmostlythankstoasuitablyHowardShoresizedscoreunderpinning
everything. Of course this is exactly what Bethesda were going for, and following the battle
dependingonwhereyourallegianceslieeitherHadvarorRalofwillmentionthattheyhavekilled
morethanyouastheywerecounting.Asthebattlethathasjustended,itsaclearreferenceto
thecommentssharedbyLegolasandGimlithroughouttheseries.Notonlythatthough,Gollums
iconicMypreciousphrasemakesanappearancewhenyoutraveltoseeMoirathehagravenat
WitchmistGrove.Asyourquestistoretrievearingfromher,shecanbeheardsayingSmeagols
iconicphraseasthetwoofyoudobattle.
8.ALannister.DoesntBelongHere
AlthoughtheGameofThronesTVshowhasbecomesomethingofaculturalbehemoth,theSong
ofIceandFirenovelsfarpredateSkyrim,insteadmostlikelybeingsomethingthatmembersofthe
teamwerereadingastheycodedvariouspartsofthegame.So,ifyoumanagetosurvivetheCidhna
Mine Thonar SilverBlood will remove his family ring and present it to you, uttering the
Lannisteriffic words A SilverBlood always pays his debts. Sure this phrase has become more
synonymouswiththelikesofPeterDinklageandhisincrediblyenjoyablecharacterTyrionLannister,
itwasalsousedinthebooks,thereforeitsnosurpriseitshowedupsomewhereinthefantastical
worldofSkyrim.
7.ExcalibursLadyOfTheLake
The first of two King Arthurreferences, and one that if youre unfamiliar with the idea of an
underwater mistress presenting our hero with a sword in an outstretched arm, it probably just
struckyouasoneofSkyrimsmanyhilariousglitches.Howeverbeingthatthesetpieceisplainto
seeineveryonesversionofthegame,youneedonlyjourneynortheastofBleakwindBasintocome
acrossityourself.Theswordisremovable,butlikealltheotherweaponsyoucanacquirethrough
theseeastereggsitprobablywontreplaceyoursignatureweaponifyourefarintothegame.
6.SwordInTheStone
Inadditiontothepreviouspoint,amoreinstantlyrecognisablesymbolthatconnotesthelegend
of King Arthur is the sword in the stone the removal of which is something that Bethesda are
morethanhappytoletyoutakeacrackat.Althoughtherearenobenefitstoremovingtheblade,
ifyouvisitRebelsCairnandlocatethesword,youcantakeitawaywithyou.Tobehonestitllgo
nicelywiththe#3onourlist
5.TheShawshankRedemptionBarter
Justtoroundoutthelistofreferencesspanningallcornersofthemediaspectrum,theresaline
of dialogue spoken while inside the Winterfold college thats almost a direct quote from Tim
Robbins Andy Dufresne character from Shawshank. As in the film our hero is trying to obtain
certainitemstobetterhelphiminhisquest,andwhenconversingwithEnthironeofyourdialogue
options will be I understand youre an elf who knows how to get things, which immediately
connotes the similar line from the movie. Sadly Enthir isnt voiced by Morgan Freeman though,
maybesomethingforSkyrim2?
4.TheChooseYourOwnAdventureBook
KolbAndTheDragon
The level of detail in Skyrim was always astounding. From that first reveal of the mountainous
landscapethatunfurledbeforeyouasyoutookoffdownacliffsidetoarandommission,tothe
game having an actual library of titles you can literally sit and read through, its no surprise
BethesdaaretakingtheirsweettimewithFallout4.Speakingofthesetextsthough,oneKolbAnd
TheDungeonisabonafideChooseYourOwnAdventurebook,meaningthatinbetweenaspatof
dragonslaying you can sit down and indulge in a little literature. Found at multiple spots
throughout the game, Kolbs story is a one filled with certain death and sadness, with only one
endingactuallyturningoutremotelypositively.Ofcourseyourefreetojustlookupthetextand
saveyourselfthebotheroftrackingdownthebookingame.
3.StarWarsHothSet-piece
This could be something of a stretch for some, but going off just how easily the above scenario
resemblesthatofLukeSkywalkersactionsonHothinEmpireStrikesBack,wethinkitsstillaneat
find.ManywillrememberthesceneintheWampaCavewhereLukedanglesprecariouslyfromthe
ceiling, willing himself to get his lightsaber to come to him yet here we see some hapless
individualwhoclearlywasntsolucky.Thereisaswordyoucangraboffthegroundtouseyourself
too, but aside from carrying it under your ownlabel of That Star Wars Sword it has no other
specialpropertiesjustdothelightsabernoiseyourself!
2.TheHeadlessHorseman
ChancesaresomeofyoucameacrossthisspiritversionoftheHeadlessHorsemanbackwhenyou
were first exploring Skyrim, yet reconciled it to just some crazy thing you see when roaming
aroundinthedeadofnight.HoweveralthoughtheHorsemanisaveryflightysort,ifyoucantrack
himlongenoughyoullfinallycomeacrossadilapidatedgravesite,completewithahugeamount
ofloottogetstuckinto.Sadlytheresnodialogueoptionsorbossencountersthough,despitemany
ofusthinkingthatpursuinghimacrosshalfoftheentiremapwoulddeliversuchathing.
1.ThreeBillyGoatsGruffFinding The
Troll
ArdentOblivionplayersmayalreadyrecallacertainsuicidaltrollthatcouldbefoundunderneath
abridgeinthatgame,althoughthistimearoundwedontgeta(actuallyprettyfunny)suicidenote
accompanyingthebody.Asaquickreminderorrevealtothosewhoneverfoundthatinitialeaster
egg,heresthenotethatwasfoundonhiscorpse:
