AVL PRODUCT DESCRIPTION BOOST RT

BOOST RT

BOOST RT is a real-time capable, system-level, engine simulation tool dedicated for the investigation
of transient operating conditions offline in desktop applications and online in HiL environments. BOOST
RT is the consequent next step to further integrate the well established BOOST 1D Cycle Simulation
tool and CRUISE, the vehicle dynamics, fuel consumption and emission simulation package. BOOST
RT focuses on three main application areas used in the different engine development phases:
Applications
1. Concept Development Phase: BOOST RT supports a fast setup and simulation of engine
design variants without considering all details of pipe gas dynamics to get guidelines on engine
performance.
2. Powertrain Design Phase: BOOST RT engine runs drive cycles fully coupled with a detailed
vehicle model (build in CRUISE) resolving both engine and vehicle dynamics with adequate
level of modeling depth within reasonable computational times.
3. Component, Powertrain, Vehicle Test Phase: BOOST RT engine runs as plant model to
support the development, calibration and testing of engine control functions.
Functionality
BOOST RT is an engine simulation package running in the time domain using transient and
steady-state 0D and quasi-dimensional component models.
Basic flow characteristics are modeled by steady-state approaches and maps
Engine characteristics can be described by two different approaches

AVL PRODUCT DESCRIPTION BOOST RT

1. Crank-angle resolved description of cylinders (including ports) within the framework of time
resolved gas-path, thermal, mechanical and control network components
2. Surrogate engine modeling using Support Vector Machines to predict arbitrary engine
quantities (air delivery, torque, wall heat losses, exhaust enthalpy flow, emissions, fuel
consumption,...) trained on arbitrary data (engine speed, intake pressure, EGR rate,
injected fuel,...) from either test-bed measurements or highly resolved BOOST Cycle
Simulation models

BOOST RT offers dedicated base engine elements to ensure the highest possible flexibility in
assembling modern engines and engine component topologies. The chosen elements and
modeling interface ensures a fast model setup
BOOST RT elements are split into five main groups:
Gas Path: Gas Properties, Plenum,
Air Cleaner, Heat Transfer, Constant
Mass Flow, Engine, Cylinder,
Compressor, Fuel Tank, Wall Film,
Surrogate Engine, Port, Turbine,
Restriction and Ambient

Thermal Network: Solid Wall and
Heat Exchanger

Mechanical Network: Shaft, Single
Ratio Transmission, Mechanical
Consumer, Flange and CRUISE
Vehicle
Control Network:
Characteristic/Map, Function/Formula
Interpreter, PID Controller, Map of
Tables and Surrogate Model
Interface: C-Interface, Matlab DLL
and Matlab API

BOOST RT offers dedicated models for all of the above listed engine components. The main features
are:
Gas Path, Thermal and Mechanical Network

Classic and general species transport supported by appropriate gas properties and species balance
equations
Cylinder heat transfer modeling according to Woschni 1978 and 1990, Hohenberg and AVL 2000
