THE WATCHWORDS OF THE SEASON

(ABSTRACT) PRINTS | Screen-
prints and digital prints give you a lar-
ger-than-life view within your own four
walls this season. A diverse array of
abstract motifs incorporating text, ani-
mal and human forms add the perfect
nishing touch to any room.
B
BRASS | Brass is the name given to
alloys of copper and zinc. Its a metal
slightly harder than copper, with a golden
shimmer. Much more affordable than
gold, its popular in jewellery-making, but
also for deco objects in the home.

GREY | Meet the coolest colour of
the year. Darker than white, lighter than
black, colourless yet still evocative -
more than 50 shades of grey are on our
list this year. Whether dove grey, an-
thracite or ash grey, each tone works
effortlessly with the brighter pops in
your home and your wardrobe.

JACQUARD | In 1805, Joseph-
Marie Jacquard invented a new device
that made it possible to control indivi-
dual warp threads on looms. For the
rst time, it was possible to produce
larger and more complex patterns in
textiles. Hand-knit and crocheted texti-
les can also be prettied with such pat-
terns, even today. Jacquard textiles are
all over the place this autumn, adding
extra luxe to everyday clothing.

KNAPSACK | A cross between a
tote back and a backpack, its not only
athletes who carry these around any-
more. A knapsack is an easy and comfy
yet chic way to carry all the essentials
42 around with you. In the coming season,
you can nd leather versions, patterned
versions, quilted versions - just about
any design you could think of, in fact.

MARBLE | Marble has been sourced
in Europe since the 7th century BCE,
but its history goes back way further.
It was a popular sculpting material in
ancient times, particularly marble found
in Carrara. In the year 2014 marb-
le is used in jewellery-making and its
unique grain provides inspiration for
dyeing textiles using batik.

QUILTING | Formerly quilting was
mostly used in a practical way, adding
extra warmth to blankets, vests or ja-
ckets. But since it has been redisco-
vered by the fashion world, quilting is
everywhere. It adds a decorative touch
to sweaters, jackets and bags when
laid over solid coloured fabrics.

SCANDINAVI AN DESIGN |
Designers Alvar Aalto and Arne Jacob-
sen are considered the forefathers of
the Scandinavian furnishing style which
has enjoyed worldwide popularity since
the 1950s. The functionality and mini-
malism which are hallmarks of Scandi-
navian design were inspired by a need
for everyday beauty and affordability.
SUCCULENTS | Tillandsia, other-
wise known as air plants, are ideal for
gardeners without green ngers. They
are perennial and easy to care for,
needing only to be sprayed with wa-
ter. They look great in macrame plant
hangers, or in standing geometric plan-
ters, breathing new life into your living
space.

TRIANGLE | The humble triangle has
a long tradition as a meaningful symbol:
it represents the Holy Trinity, the Eye of
Providence, or the might of reason. In
both equilateral and isosceles form, its
making a comeback as the logo of Ge-
neration Hipster, and is often worn as a
jewellery pendant or as a print.
