ORL vs. Video Feed
Why should ORL be reduced to a minimum?
Strong fluctuations in laser output power;
Distortions in analog video signals (multipath
interference (MPI));
Higher bit-per-error rate (BER) in digital systems;
Potential permanent damage to the laser.
Important: Measure ORL in the
same direction as the
transmission of the 1550 nm
video signal.

Total Link Loss & Reflectance OTDR
Testing from the optical network terminal (ONT) provides an OTDR trace
that is easier to interpret.
Chosen 1625 for many reasons 1) single wavelength time saving !! 2)
Future troubleshooting lot easier (benchmarking), 3) in and out service
test possible

How does an OTDR Work?
Pulse versus resolution and dynamic range
Short Pulse : more resolution but less energy
Long Pulse width: more energy but less resolution
10 us pulse
20 us pulse
Short pulses will give a better resolution but less dynamic range:
OTDR specifications & limitations
- Pulse width vs. Dead zones and Dynamic range
Long pulses will give a better dynamic range but less resolution:

Macrobends
Using a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to Locate Macrobends
Dont forget:
1. Maximum distance reach (straight fiber) is approximately 5 km
2. Through a 1 x 4 splitter = 4 times weaker
3. Through a 1 x 8 splitter = 8 times weaker
4. Through a 1 x 4 and 1 x 8 splitter =
32 times weaker

Sxx does not provide full fiber characterization (fixed pulse

PPM-350 to verify optical signals.
OTDR to localize break.
Increased BER / slow data rate
If a signal level is out of the transmission window (above or under), BER
may increase.
The PPM-350 is the best tool to monitor each signal level.
OTDRs can be used to localize fault.
Macrobendings
A VFL can be used to find and correct macrobends in splice trays.
OTDRs can be used to detect and localize problem.
Bad Connectors
A fiber probe can be used to find and clean dirty connectors.
