implementation.__

Background Information

Students have researched cyber safety on cybersafety.gov.au,
Students have already created a storyboard to design an animation to educate a 10yr old student
at SJGS about cyber safety.
Students have previously used Scratch, editing sprites, changing background, and using basic
movement.

Teaching/Learning Purpose(s) (written in terms of outcomes):

8.9 Develop and modify programs with user interfaces involving branching, repetition or iteration and subprograms
in a general-purpose programming language (p.71)

To develop an animation using the Scratch user interfaces

Use Scratch subprograms to edit character movement and interaction.

Implement background changes into the animation.

Preparation:

A basic 2 page slideshow presentation has been prepared to show the students during the
lesson, containing information to help them understand what is required of them to achieve
during the lesson.

I have familiarised myself with Scratch so that if the students get stuck during the lesson, I
will know how to assist them appropriately.

My fellow student teacher (A) and I (K) will take turns throughout the lesson. We have
broken the lesson up into 5 sections: Introduction, Recap, Instruction, Activity, and
Conclusion.
I will take the lead for the Introduction and Instruction, while A will take the lead for the
Recap and Conclusion. During the Activity, both of us will equally monitor and assist
students as required.

Learning Experiences:

1. How will I engage the learners?

Introduction: The students will line up outside the classroom at the start of the lesson, I will
instruct the students to come in and take a seat at the desks.
I will introduce myself and A, and then instruct the students to participate in an icebreaker by
telling us their name and what they want to be when they grow up.

Recap: A will recap the topic of cyber safety by asking 3 questions, which will engage the
students with the lesson and gauge whether the class understood their previous work.
1. Raising hands, what are some things you know about cyber safety?
2. What are some ways you can stay safe online?
3. Who do you ask if you are unsure if something is safe or not?
Next, A will ask by a show of hands who has completed their storyboard for their animation.
A will recap the project that they are to create an animation, to teach a 10yr old child at the
school about cyber safety, by using Scratch.
A will ask the class Who remembers how to make the sprite move around the screen?. A
will select a student who knows how to demonstrate the action on the teachers computer
which will be shown on the class projector, while A explains what the student is doing to the
class. The student, or another if the first cant complete the action, will then also demonstrate
to the class, while A is explaining the procedure, will then demonstrate how to transition
backgrounds (stage).

2. Student tasks and activities (what will the students do to achieve the lesson purpose(s)?

Instruction: I will then explain to the students Today you will be starting your animations.
When you logon to the computers you will need to open your storyboard and open Scratch.
You will be expected to do 3 things today. First, is to have your sprite (character) moving
around the stage. Second, you will have 2 characters interacting with each other, for example
talking to each other. And thirdly, you need to include a background transition in your
animation. These things are listed up here [pointing to projector screen] on the screen and we
will leave it up for you throughout the lesson. Does anyone have any questions before we
start?

Activity: I will send the students to the computers to logon, open their storyboards and Scratch
to begin their work.
A and I will both walk around monitoring the students and offer help and advice as required, as
well as remind students to stay on task if they get distracted.

5. Conclusion (how do you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson
purpose(s)?

Conclusion: 15 minutes before the end of the lesson we will give the students notice
that they have only 5 more minutes to work. 10 minutes before the end of the lesson,
A will address the whole class, saying Can I have everyones attention please?
Screens off and eyes to the front. A will wait for all students to comply with the
instruction, speaking to and reminding any student who isnt paying attention, while
praising those students who comply quickly and quietly.
A will ask the students what they were able to achieve in the lesson, using the 3 points
of character movement, interaction and background transition to judge how successful
the lesson was.
A will inform the students they will be continuing the project in the next lesson.
A will instruct the students to save their work and log off the computers and then
stand behind theirs chairs ready to go to their next class.
When all students are ready and it is time to go, A will dismiss the students.

Assessment and evaluation: (How do you know the students have achieved the
learning purpose(s). Evaluate your own performance)

The lesson will be assessed according to how well the students are able to complete
the given tasks of programming their characters to move around the stage, interacting
with another character and programming a background transition.
My performance can be assessed by whether the students understand what is required
of them and whether they are engaged in the lesson to the extent that they are able to
complete the tasks set.
While many students may start the activity with full understanding there will likely be
some who are still unsure of what to do. As the students begin to work it will be my
role to find the students who appear to be struggling and work with them to one on
one and clarify any point they may have misunderstood.
Also, students who are talking off topic and not working will need to be reminded to
get back on task.
If I am able to keep the students on task for the majority of the time they are doing the
activity then most of the students should be able to achieve the 3 tasks set.
