Students are testing the stopping distance of car in different surfaces.

One of the surface is rough carpet and the

other is smooth vinyl. Which one will have higher stopping distance if the car is released from the same height
at each time? Give reasons for your findings.

What is the velocity of a car released from the top of roller coaster of height 15m? The bottom of the roller
coaster is made of rough concrete with coefficient of friction 0.4. Calculate the time and distance the car will
travel after hitting the bottom.

Which of the following position is safe and why?

Draw the displacement-time, velocity-time and acceleration-time graph of a person jumping up and down on a
flat surface. Explain the energy changes happening during his jump. If the maximum velocity achieved by him is
3m/s what is the kinetic energy and what is the maximum height achieved by him. Explain with graphical
representation the changes in the graphs and the energy if he is jumping on a trampoline.

A trampoline has an elastic constant 20,000N/m. If the mass of a child jumping on it is 20kg what is the
acceleration on the child due to the elastic property of the trampoline. How much does this acceleration will
vary if an adult of mass 40kg jumps on the same trampoline? If both child and the adult jump with the same
initial velocity of 5m/s what is the extension on the trampoline in both situation.

An SUV with mass 2000kg collide with a kangaroo at rest. The mass of kangaroo is 900kg. The time of
interaction is 0.1seconds. The acceleration which mammals can withstand is 4g. If the SUV comes to stop after
the collision what is its initial velocity?

A rock is thrown straight upward off the edge of a balcony that is 5 m above the ground. The rock rises 10 m,
then falls all the way down to the ground below the balcony. What is the rock's displacement?

A ball is thrown straight up with an initial speed of 20 m/s. How high will the ball travel?

Determine the object's total distance travelled and displacement.
Draw the corresponding v- t and a-
t graphs for the situation here and explain in words the motion in each graph

1) A 30 kg shell is fired at an angle of 50 degrees and a speed of 350m/s. At the top of its trajectory it explodes
into three pieces. One 6 kg piece drops straight down while the other two equal sized pieces proceed in the
current direction, one at half the velocity of the other. Determine the range of each of the shell pieces.
2) A scientist has 2.5g of Ra-226. How many grams will decay after 800 years if the half life of Ra-226 is 1600
years.
3) What are isotopes?
4) A radioactive atom emits a particle of radiation. The mass number and atomic number of the atom remain
unchanged. Which could have been emitted?
5) Complete the following
6) A rifle aimed horizontally at shoulder height (1.5 m above the ground) at a target bulls eye 700m away. The
bullet leaves the barrel with a muzzle velocity of 1000m/s?
7) A lovesick lad wants to throw a bag of candy and love notes into the open window of his girlfriends
bedroom 10.0 m above. Assuming it just reaches the window, he throws the love gifts at 60.0
o
to the
ground:
a) At what velocity should she throw the bag?
b) How far from the house is he standing when he throws the bag?

8) A bullet of mass 10g strikes a pendulum bob of mass 1.3kg horizontally, and then becomes embedded in the
bob. The bob is initially at rest, and is suspended by a stiff rod of length 0.6m and negligible mass. The bob is
free to rotate in the vertical direction. What is the minimum value of velocity which causes the bob to
execute a complete vertical circle?

Answers; 8. To make vertical circle h=2l 635m/s 2)0.625g
The total distance traveled by the object is simply the sum of all these areas: 3 + 6 + 4.5 + 2 + 2 = 17.5 m
The displacement is found in a similar fashion, except areas below the x-axis are considered negative: 3 + 6 +
4.5 - 2 - 2 = 9.5 m
v2 = vi2 + 2ay = 0
-2ay = vi2
y = vi2/(-2a) = 202/(-2 * -9.81) = 20.4 m

Or, if -10 is used instead of -9.81:
202/(-2 * -10) = 202/20 = 20 m
Displacement deals only with the initial and final positions of the rock. The rock's initial position is the
balcony, and its final position is the ground 5 m below. So, the rock's displacement is 5 m downward.
