RADIO FREQUENCY
INFORMATION
The FederalCom m unications
Com m ission (FCC) and the
Canadian Radio and
Telecom m unications Com m ission
(CRTC) establish the frequencies
A M and FM stations m ay use for
their broadcasts.A llow able
frequencies are:
A M 530,5401600,1610 kH z in
10 kH z steps
FM 87.9,88.1107.7,107.9 M hz
in .02 M hz steps
N ot allfrequencies are used in a
given area.
Radio reception factors
Three factors prim arily affect radio
reception:
Distance/strength. The farther
an FM signaltravels,the w eaker
it is.The listenable range ofthe
average FM station is
approxim ately 40 km (24 m iles).
This range can be affected by
signalm odulation.Signal
m odulation is a process radio
stations use to increase their
strength and/or volum e relative
to other stations.
Terrain. H ills,m ountains,and
tallbuildings betw een your
vehicles antenna and the radio
station signalcan cause FM
signalreception problem s.Static
can be caused on A M stations
by pow er lines,electric fences,
traffic lights,and thunderstorm s.

M oving aw ay from the
interfering structure (out ofits

reception to norm al.
Station overload. W eak
stations are som etim es captured
by stronger stations w hen you
pass a broadcast tow er.A
stronger station m ay tem porarily
overtake a w eaker station and
