Important Upcoming Dates
May Branch Meeting - Cranes for Engineers
May 22nd, 12:00 PM, Westwood Club

President's Message

Good morning to you, as the calendar turns to
May I am reminded my term as Branch
President is nearing completion. This year
has flown by as we have hosted many
exciting events. I would like to say thank
you to a wonderful Board who made these
events possible and successful. Caleb Lange was instrumental in
planning our speaker series and from my perspective did a
wonderful job. Two speakers that I enjoyed the most were Dr. Jim
Smith, UVA professor and founder of PUREMadi, and Dr. Noah
Goodall, VCTIR research scientist who presented on wireless
communication between vehicles. My goal for the year was to
provide speakers that appealed to the largest portion of our
membership.

Several other events we hosted were the Engineer's Night Out last
summer at Iron Bridge Sport Park, attending a Flying Squirrels game, and
the Popsicle Bridge Contest during Engineer's week. Our largest event
which we normally hold in the fall we moved to the spring to increase
attendance and to eliminate conflict with other golf tournaments. I
thought was well attended in both instances and would like to thank
Caleb and Ashley Johnson for planning these successful events. Through
the golf tournaments we are able to sponsor our annual college
scholarship and fund our educational outreach opportunities such as the
Popsicle Bridge Contest.

We have openings for several positions beginning in August on our Board.
If you are interested please email me, ALClark@TranSystems.com,
for more information.

May Branch Meeting - Cranes for Engineers

When: Thursday, May 22nd, 2014 @ 12:00 PM
Cost: $25
PDH: 1 credit

A crane can be one of the most useful pieces of equipment on your
jobsite. However, they can also be the lead story on the evening
news. In recent years, cranes have been involved in major incidents
that have resulted in injuries, deaths, millions in damage to equipment,
and severe impacts on project schedules. This program is intended for
the non-crane specialist, to help identify some of the warnings signs that
things may not be going well. It takes a quick look at common crane
types, setup and stability, rigging, and operator/ controlling contractor
responsibilities. If you would like to expand your knowledge of cranes,
this program may help you.

About the presenter:

Curtis Childress is the Safety Director for Froehling & Robertson. He was
previously the National Construction Training Manager for St Paul/
