ASCE Richmond Branch Newsletter

Volume5 Issue 1 October2012

President's Message

One of the most rewarding aspects of being involved in
ASCE, for me personally, has been involvement in
educational outreach events. These events have given me
the chance to work directly with students of all ages, and
it has always been great to see how excited the kids get
and to be able to help out the next generation of
engineers.

As I'm sure many of you have seen, engineering careers
have been consistently ranked high for rewarding careers,
job availability, and monetary compensation. Yet, it always seems that it is
difficult to get students interested in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM) programs. Through ASCE, we are able to help reach out
to the students and inspire them to pursue these types of careers.

In the past few years, the Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest has gotten
progressively larger, the Chesterfield Science Fair has grown to a multi-day
event with competitions and activities, the University of Virginia Chapter
has expanded their group and brought their competitions to a higher level,
and countless other progressive educational outreach events have been
successful in the region. The fact that these activities are growing is
attributed to the educators and volunteers who are inspiring these students
and providing hands on opportunities to experience STEM outside of the
classroom. We plan on continuing to offer support for these events, as well
as any new opportunities that arise.

This year, our branch is fortunate enough to have three very excited
educational outreach chairs. Ashley, Caleb and Josiah are coming up with
new ways to improve our current programs, and introducing new ideas to
reach more students. As we continue to contribute to this effort, I hope you
will continue to support ASCE's efforts and help send our educational
outreach program to higher levels.

I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you to consider helping us reach the
next level. If you are available on October 11th, please join us and play in
our golf tournament to benefit our scholarship and educational outreach
funds. This is a fun day for everyone involved, and all of the proceeds go
directly to the students. If you are unavailable on the 11th, or are not a

golfer, there are many other ways to get involved! More information can be
found on our website, www.ascerichmond.org.

Also, we will soon be starting our fundraising drive for our Popsicle Stick
Bridge Contest. This contest had over 200 students participate last year, and
we are expecting even more this February! We are hoping to raise enough
funds to buy an additional testing apparatus to prevent us from limiting the
number of students who can enter. I understand that funds are tight right
now, so if contributing monetarily is not an option, we are always looking
for volunteers to help out with events throughout the year. We hope you'll
join us and look forward to seeing you soon!

involved, or suggestions for improvements, please feel free to contact me at

October Branch Meeting- High Bridge StatePark

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (VDCR) selected
STV for the challenge of transforming a nearly 100-year-old abandoned,
historic steel viaduct railroad bridge spanning 2,419 feet and towering 120
feet over the Appomattox River in Prince Edward and Cumberland Counties,
VA. Abandoned for seven years, High Bridge is now the centerpiece and final
link of a 31-mile rails-to-trails pathway for hikers, bikers, and horseback
riders in High Bridge Trail State Park which allows visitors to not only safely
walk across the bridge, but also take in the pre-Civil War era history of a
site more than 120-feet above the Appomattox River.

Join Ron Briggs, STV Project Manager, for a discussion about some unique
challenges in converting this historic railroad bridge as well as some of the
very unique history of this project site and how STV incorporated this into
the design of the structure.

Local News and Projects

CongratulationsASCE Richmond Branch!

Recently, theASCE Richmond Branch won 8 awards at the ASCE Virginia
Section annual banquet! A summary of our honorees can be found below.
We'd like to thank everyone involved and all of our branch members for
everything they put into this program.

Educational Outreach - Brooke Young
Brooke took on the task of heading up the Richmond Branch Educational
Outreach chair and did a terrific job with all of the responsibilities. Under
her guidance, the Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest grew to a record number of
participants, and we were able to further connect with the students at the
University of Virginia.

Public Relations - Austin Clark, PE
In addition to planning and hosting the Government Meet and Greet, Austin
helped to make the public aware of how the engineering community can be
involved in influencing the government via an information session prior to
the Meet and Greet.

Engineers Without Borders - VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University)
Chapter
The VCU Chapter of Engineers Without Borders has been very active in the
past year. The chapter has completed two visits to Bolivia to aid in
providing a village with drinking water. In addition to attending one of the
Richmond Branch's meetings to educate our members on their projects, they
have been actively engaging the engineering community around VCU and
Richmond to bring awareness and support to their cause.

Employer Support - Dewberry (Richmond Office)
Dewberry's Richmond Office has been continuously very supportive of the
Richmond Branch of ASCE. In addition to two current board members coming
from Dewberry, whenever an event needs support or participation, they
always help to meet the need. Over the past year Dewberry employees have
been active at branch meetings, the Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest, judging
the Chesterfield Science Fair, speaking with the UVA Chapter of ASCE, and
various other events.

Newsletter -Melanie Leckey

10/15/2012 http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=v8jx5dkab&v=001TEa7HUw8hRGa...
Melanie stepped in to fill the position and has revamped the newsletter to a
format that can be accessed without having to open attachments. There has
been much positive feedback on our communications committee, and how
well it has been integrated with the development of our new website.

Diversity - Richmond Branch
The Richmond Branch was awarded a Diversity Award based on our
application for the Outstanding Branch Award. It was awarded due to the
Richmond Branch having a high percentage of female board members,
accommodating all people by having events at locations that are ADA
accessible, and involving members of all ages in events.

Government Relations - Amanda Harmon, PE
Amanda has helped organize and attract attendees for the annual
Government Meet and Greet for multiple years. With her help, the event
has grown in size and class with more Virginia legislative members attending
than ever before.

Website - Kevin O'Neill
The Richmond ASCE website has been revamped and maintained by Kevin
for nearly a year. The new website is streamlined and includes more
information that is easily accessible for members. Additionally, Kevin aided
in allowing the branch to receive all payments online via the website.
