For special-purpose, custom-designed
buildings the instabus

EIB has long

proved itself to be the ideal answer.
In the residential arena more and
more houseowners are becoming
aware of the advantages of bus tech-
nology which is also allowing
construction companies
to incorporate more
safety, more convenience
and more energy-saving
into the homes they build.
Convenience and flexibility were at the
top of the list for owner Valentin Din-
kelbach when it came to planning the
electrical installations for his house.
The electrical systems must adapt to
my needs and not vice versa. Like
him, many other houseowners are
faced by the question of where to put
switches and socket outlets when
planning their homes. In fact, it is
only after you have moved into your
new home that you really begin to ap-
either has to chase new conduits into
the structure or learn to live with tem-
porary leads. But not in a house with
an instabus EIB system: The bus can
adapt itself to practically anything,
say, when lighting systems need to be
rearranged (Figs. 1a-c), extra moni-
toring functions added or rooms used
for different purposes.
Displays giving plain-text messages
can be placed wherever they are
needed (Fig. 2) so that the owner is
kept fully in the picture at all times.
Basically, that is also why Mr. Dinkel-
bach decided to go for a bus system
in his house:
From displays in the living room or
bedroom he can monitor all the dif-
ferent functions of the system. For
example, he can check whether the
garage door is closed, see what the
outside temperature is, whether the
freezer is running at the right tempe-
rature or if a burglar is trying to get
into the house through the cellar.
When necessary he can use a PC and
the appropriate software to enter text
messages into the system at the dis-
play units which are then triggered by
certain events to be brought up on the
display accompanied by an audible
warning (Fig. 5).
The bus system also controls the
underfloor hot-water heating (Fig. 4)
according to which particular mode
has been preselected such as Open
fire, Frost protection, Normal
or Summer. It allows any un-
necessary consumption of heat to be

lighting setups can be
selected from a single
instabus EIB switch
preciate where such things as sockets,
switches and thermostats should be.
Typical examples are a furniture
unit that gets put against another wall
instead of the one shown in the draw-
ing because it is a nuisance to get up
and lower the blinds every time the
sun shines on it. Or the freezer with
an alarm buzzer that no-one can hear
if the cellar door is closed.
Convenience means freedom to change
The instabus EIB gives electrical in-
stallations flexibility. A house lives
along with its occupants inside it. If I
want to use certain rooms for dif-
ferent purposes I dont want to wait
until the next time I redecorate until I
can install new switches or socket
outlets. Anyone who wants to put in
new or extra wiring later on usually

almost entirely eliminated. And, should
there be any malfunctions, say in the
heating system, the instabus EIB will
detect it immediately long before the
house gets cold.
Lighting programmed as you like it
Various lighting settings, such as
Mealtime, Reading/Working,
Watching TV and Entertaining,
can be stored in the memory module
of the system to be called up at the
press of a button when needed.
For example, as Renate Dinkelbach
and her little girls sit down on the sofa
to watch TV she simply presses the
button marked Watching TV and
the lights are dimmed automatically
to the right level.
If Renate is entertaining guests she
can press another button to access a
different, more appropriate, lighting
setting from the memory.
When he wants to read, Mr. Din-
kelbach only has to press another of
the four buttons to get the right sort
of illumination without having to stir
from his chair (Fig. 1).
The lighting settings stored in the
memory module can be altered at any
time from the 4-button control unit
using the teach-in mode in the same
way as you would change the settings
for volume, colour, brightness or con-
trast on a TV set. The various settings
can be called up either from the fixed
4-button control units at the entrances
and in the seating areas or by means
of an infrared remote-control unit.
All-round convenience and safety
Control of the electrically-operated
window blinds in the living and eating
areas is accessed in conjunction with
the lighting settings. However, it is also
possible to operate the blinds indi-
vidually, in groups or all at the same
time and by means of an infrared
remote-control unit, too. The switches
are placed close to the blind actuators.
The bus as watchkeeper
Homeowners can also use the instabus
EIB system to control outside lights.
All the lights on the house itself and
around the garden can be controlled by
intruder sensors, bus control switches
or a hand-held infrared remote-control
unit. The intruder sensors can be
overridden selectively when people
are using the patio or balcony con-
tinuously so that the lights do not
come on at all if it is daytime or do not

t calculation for the converter and the
motor temperature monitoring using a
temperature model.
Optimized pulse patterns are im-
plemented so that motor utilization is as
high as possible. These guarantee the
highest converter output voltage with
low motor losses. The pulse frequency
can be set between 1.5 kHz and
16 kHz. This further enhances the sys-
tem with regard to motor noise and res-
onance effects.
Vector Control VC
This control version includes, in ad-
dition to V/f control (open-loop), also
eld-oriented control (vector control) for
induction motors. VC offers a high
A damping function, which prevents
the formation of signicant resonance
effects, permits, in conjunction with a
series of other measures, the use of V/f
control up to outputs of 160 kW.
As the FC control version is mainly
used without tachometer, a slip com-
pensation function improves speed
accuracy. It is possible to mount an
analog- or digital tachometer to further
increase the speed accuracy.

the FC version are the ground-fault test,

quency converters (Fig. 1) offer the
user three closed-loop control con-
cepts: FC for voltage-frequency con-
trol, VC for vector control and SC for
servo control (Fig. 2). With one of
these versions, the converter perfor-
mance can be easily adapted to the
particular drive task. Further, the pa-
rameter numbers of the individual
closed-loop versions have been har-
monized with one another, so that a
uniform operator control concept was
able to be achieved. Thus, the same
parameters and terminal functions re-
sult, for all three versions, in the same
responses.
he FC version (Frequency Control) is
the right choice for simple drive tasks
such as pump- and fan drives.
If open-loop speed or stator frequen-
cy control is not adequate for a par-
ticular drive task, as the dynamic
performance or the maximum drive out-
put is too low, then the VC control ver-
sion (Vector Control) is available.
The third closed-loop control version
is especially designed for servo ap-
plications and is designated SC (Servo
Control). This control is most efcient in
connection with permanent-magnet syn-
chronous motors.
Voltage-Frequency Control FC
The FC version uses V/f control
(open-loop), which allows induction-,
synchronous- and reluctance motors to
be operated with average dynamic per-
formance. The V/f characteristic setting
is supported by a motor identication
function, which among other things,
automatically determines the motor
stator resistance and the voltage boost
of the V/f characteristic. Thus, the mo-
tor is ready to be switched-on with only
simple parameterization work.
Electromechanical resonance effects
of induction motors present a challenge
for V/f-controlled drives (open-loop).
These resonance points are generally
below the rated motor speed, therefore
within the speed control range.
