The Information Professional's Guide to Search and Discovery
8-9 October 2014, Rydges Sydney Central
AGENDA
The advent of technology and the web has meant that there is a lot more interest nowadays in information, such as email
and unstructured data, scattered throughout an organisation (and externally). This immensity of information is called big
data, and the main challenge is in finding valuable needles of business information in that vast haystack of data - and that
is where search technologies can help.

refreshments)

8.00 Registration and refreshments

Enterprise-wide Information Management:
Breaking down data silos and lessons learnt
Dr Chi Nguyen, Digital Information Manager;
Dr Neil Fraser, Director of Strategic Planning &
Information, Macquarie University
About the workshop:
In most universities it is not uncommon to see
information separated into various silos": records
data - ofen in physical paper fles, administration
and backofce fles, students and staf information,
research datasets, and reporting and analytics data
- ofen in Excel spreadsheets and various custom
made databases. Managing these disparate sources
of information is a daunting task especially given the
legislative requirements around compliance, privacy
and security that the university, as a public institution,
must comply to. More importantly, the ability to
search and utilise key information in a timely manner
has become more and more critical in areas such as
strategic planning, marketing, and commercialisation
of research outputs.
In this workshop we will present tools and strategies
for managing these disparate information sources
based on our experience at Macquarie University.
Topics that we will cover include:
Digitisation - how to turn 10 million pages of physical
paper records into fully indexed and searchable
electronic records.
Enabling universal web accessibility and persistent
unique identifer for all individual pieces of
information
Metadata - design and repository support for
enrichment of metadata to digital assets, and automatic
metadata extraction tools
Search - enabling user search across millions of assets
while preserving user security and access control
constraints.
Datamarts" - data warehouse design and technology
to support reporting and visualisation of key business
critical information.
Strategic planning with unstructured text analytics
