TransScriptstheinterdisciplinaryonlinejournalintheHumanitiesandSocialSciencesbasedatthe
UniversityofCalifornia,Irvineinvitesgraduatestudentstosubmittheirworkforpublication.The
themeofourfourthvolumewillbeConstructing(Dis)Ability.
Whoisableandwhoisdisabled?Whodecides,andbaseduponwhatcriteria?Inexploringthe
multipleandintersectingmatricesofpowerthesequestionsevoke,itbecomesclearthatdiscoursesof
abilityareasubiquitousastheyareoverlooked,asproteanastheyareembedded.
Ontheonehand,werecognizethecommondistinctionbetweenimpairmentanddisabilityadvanced
bydisabilitystudiesscholarsandcodifiedinW.H.O.,U.N.,U.S.,andU.K.disabilitylaws.This
distinctionpositsimpairmentastherealityofphysical,emotional,orcognitivedifference,and
disabilityasthesocialunderstandingandimplicationsofthatdifference.Ontheotherhand,we
acknowledgethatabilityis,inmanyways,aselasticaconceptasdisability,andencouragesubmissions
thatproblematizebothsidesofthebinary,aswellasthebinaryitself.
Theagingprocessandaleatoryeventsalikerenderimpairmentanearcertaintyforthemajorityofthe
population.Theexperienceofdisabilityistoacertainextentblindtoprivilege.However,itisin
examiningdisabilitythatsomeofthemostintransigentsocialjusticeissuescometothefore.Whatit
meanstobedisablediscontingentonquestionsofaccess,beitaccesstohealthcare,education,
politicalrepresentationorthejudicialsystem.IntheUnitedStatesandaroundtheworld,race,class,
andgenderoftenfunctionasgatekeepers,eitherfacilitatingorrestrictingthataccess.
Whilethefieldofdisabilitystudiescontinuestogaintractionwithintheacademy,TransScripts
understandsabilityasalensofanalysisthatresistscompartmentalization.Accordingly,weencourage
scholarsfromawiderangeofbackgroundstocontributetheirideas.Weappreciateandwillconsider
piecesthatspeaknotonlytothesocialconstructionofdisability,butalsotothematerialand
politicalconsequencesofthatconstruction.Oureditorialcollectivewillreadsubmissionsfrom
disciplinesincluding(butnotlimitedto):history,arthistory,literature,philosophy,theology,psychology,
education,politicalscience,anthropology,sociology,informatics,publicpolicy,publichealth,and
bioethics.Wealsoeagerlyseektheperspectivesofscholarsworkinginfatstudies,queerstudies,
womensandgenderstudies,filmandvisualstudies,urbanstudies,scienceandtechnologystudies,
culturalstudies,andcriticalracestudies.Wearehappytoconsidercoauthoredsubmissions,and
especiallywelcomefacultygraduatestudentcollaborations.

may,butcertainlyneednot,addresstheexampleslistedabove.Aswebelievethatscholarshipfroma
varietyofapproachescanhelpinformcontemporaryunderstandings,submissionsneednotconformto
anydisciplinary,methodological,temporal,orothercriteria.Theyneedonlybeoriginal,well
researched,andproperlycited.Englishlanguagecontributionsfromalluniversitiesinallcountrieswillbe
considered.

includingeditorialpiecesandscholarlyarticles.PastcontributorshaveincludedtienneBalibar,
HortenseSpillers,LeeEdelman,RoderickFerguson,andTempleGrandin,
SubmissionGuidelinesandReviewProcess
Thedeadlineforsubmissionis10January2014.AllsubmissionsshouldbewritteninEnglish.Thetotal
wordcountshouldbebetween3,000and12,000words,includingfootnotes.Explanatoryfootnotes
shouldbekepttoaminimum.SubmissionsshouldemploytheMLAstyleofcitation(forfurther
informationonthejournalssubmissionguidelinesandmissionstatement,seethejournalwebsiteat
