Taping: Piece A is too large to print on one page & needs to be taped together. Piece is marked.

Approximate Finished Dimensions: 14" wide x 11.5” high x 3.75” deep (36cm x 29cm x 10cm)

Seam Allowance: 3/8" (or edge of presser foot). The 3/8" allowance is included in the pattern pieces.

Cut on Fold: Some pattern pieces need to be placed on fold when cutting. The pieces are marked place on foldalong the side that needs to be on the fold.

Recommended Fabric: This pattern is written for medium weight quilting cottons.

½ yard lining fabric

1 ¾ yards 22" wide sew-in interfacing

Decorative button for flap (optional)

1.25"-1.5" piece of ¾" wide VELCRO

1. Cut Pieces

Note: The two halves of piece A need to be taped together where indicated. Piece E is a template only--no fabric is cut.

2. Interface

a) Place the corresponding interfacing piece on the WRONG side of the following pieces:

(2) lining B (note: 1 lining B is NOT interfaced)

b) Smooth the interfacing pieces in place on the WRONG side of the fabric, and pin if desired. Tip: Pin the A pieces along the sides only.

3. Handles

b) Lay (1) piece D WRONG side up on your work surface.

c) Center the template piece E on the WRONG side of the D piece. Align the center guide marks at the top and bottom of piece E so they follow the grain of the fabric.

d) Trace around E, drawing the handle outline directly on the fabric.

f) Repeat steps b - e for the remaining (3) D pieces.

m) Sew around the handle outline, stitching directly on the circle drawn in step 3.d., on all (4) A/D pieces.

n) Trim the center from all (4) handles, leaving a 1/4"- 3/8" allowance.

o) Clip curves around the center of all (4) handles.

p) Press the stitching of (1) handle to shrink & set thread.

q) Push piece D toward the center of the handle by pressing the seam between A & D.

r) From the WRONG side of A, reach through and pull D through handle center. Tip: You may find it easier to combine steps r & s, and press one small section of D to the wrong side of A at a time.

s) Press D in place on the WRONG side of A.

u) Repeat steps p - t for remaining (3) handles.

v) Topstitch around all (4) handle centers using a 1/4" - 3/8" allowance.

4. Darts

a) Mark darts on the WRONG side of all (4) A pieces.

b) Sew darts in place on the WRONG side of all (4) A pieces.

c) Press darts to set & shrink thread.

d) Clip extra fabric from darts if desired.

5. Exterior Pocket

b) Match up edges and pin in place.

c) Sew around the B pieces, leaving a 2.5" - 3" (7cm) opening at the top for turning the pocket RIGHT side out. Tip: Sew the opening closed first. Click here for more info & photos.

d) Trim corners.

h) Press the pocket to neaten the seams. Tip: Insert scissor tips through the opening and gently push out corners and curves.

j) Topstitch at 1/4" across upper edge of pocket.

k) Pull apart the two halves of the VELCRO piece.

l) Center one half of the VELCRO piece so the top edge is about 0.75" (2cm) below the top of the pocket.

m) Stitch the VELCRO in place.

n) Center the completed pocket RIGHT side up on (1) focus fabric A piece, with the bottom of the pocket about 2.5" from the bottom of piece A.

Center the remaining VELCRO half on the RIGHT side of lining piece C. The bottom of the VELCRO piece is about 1" from the bottom edge of piece C.

Sew the VELCRO piece in place.

Place focus fabric C and lining C RIGHT sides together.

Match edges and pin in place.

Sew around both C pieces, leaving a 2.5" - 3" (7cm) opening along the top. Tip: Sew the opening closed first. Click here for more info & photos.

l) Align the flap over the front pocket, lining up the VELCRO tabs and then straightening the top of the flap. If the VELCRO tabs don't line up perfectly, that is ok. It is more important to make sure the flap is one straight. The VELCRO pieces only need to touch each other somewhat to stick together.

a) Place (2) lining fabric B pieces RIGHT sides together (1 B piece is interfaced, and 1 is not).

b) Match up edges and pin in place.

k) Sew the pocket in place around the sides and bottom, using a 1/4" allowance. Tip: To help keep the pocket flat and from gaping open, sew a few stitches toward the center on each side of the pocket at the top.

l) Sew around the pocket a second time at 1/8".

a) Place the (2) focus fabric A pieces RIGHT sides together.

b) Match up darts, and then match the sides. Pin in place.

c) Sew around the sides and bottom.

d) Clip curves.

e) Press stitching to set & shrink thread.

f) Press both side seams open flat at the top.

9. Lining Bag Shell

a) Place the (2) lining fabric A pieces RIGHT sides together.

b) Match up sides and bottom and pin in place.

c) Sew around the sides and bottom.

d) Clip curves.

e) Press stitching to set & shrink thread.

f) Press both side seams open flat at the top.

10. Attach Bag Shells

a) Turn focus fabric bag shell RIGHT side out.

b) With the interior & exterior pockets on opposite sides, insert the focus fabric shell INSIDE the lining shell. The fabrics of the shells are now RIGHT sides together.

c) Match the sides seams and pin in place.

h) Pull bag shells apart.

i) Turn the bag RIGHT side out through one of the handles.

j) Tuck the lining shell down inside the focus fabric shell.

k) Press the top seam. Tip: If you have a sleeve board, it is helpful for pressing the top of this bag.

11. Finishing

b) Pin around the handle using just a couple pins (fewer chances of poking yourself ;0]).

c) Sew the handles together using a slip stitch to attach the focus fabric & lining D layers (the two innermost layers of the handle).

d) Repeat a - c for second handle.

e) Neaten the seam around the top of the bag and pin in place. Tip: If some parts of the top seam have slipped down, massage them back into place by rolling the seam between your fingers.

f) Topstitch at 1/4" around the top of the bag.

g) Trim any stray threads.

h) Sew button to the front of the flap, if desired.
