Preparing for Your Performance Appraisal

Being well prepared for your performance appraisal will help you and your
supervisor accurately reflect on your performance over the past year and set goals
for the next year.
This collection of resources is designed to help you prepare for your performance
appraisal. First, assess your readiness and then use any additional tools as helpful.

Assess Your Readiness
The following statements descri*e actions you can ta1e to ensure a productive and
constructive performance appraisal process. $hile you don2t need to complete
everything *elow for success, how many of these practices do you currently follow3

$riting Your !elf Assessment
What is a Self Assessment?
A self assessment is an employee2s narrative description of accomplishments
related to their 7o* o*7ectives.
Purpose
The purpose of an employee self assessment is to assist employees and supervisors
in preparing for performance evaluations. Being as1ed to complete a self
assessment invites you to *e part of a discussion a*out your performance over the
past year. Your self assessment can help you to reflect on your performance in the
past year and to document your accomplishments and their impact on your unit. 't
is also an opportunity to communicate with your supervisor a*out your
understanding of your 7o* duties and responsi*ilities, performance standards and
expectations, and your accomplishments.
Preparation
As you prepare to write your self assessment, *egin *y reviewing
documentation a*out your wor1 such as your 7o* description, wor1
o*7ectives, and department goals and mission.
'f you 1eep a performance log to trac1 ma7or accomplishments and wor1
throughout the year, review your log to help you reconstruct your
performance over the past year. 'f not, ta1e time to review your calendar and
other records of your wor1.
Reflect on the purpose of your 7o* and how it contri*utes to the mission of
your organi=ational unit.
Writing Your Self Assessment

Review your 7o* description and wor1 documents again to *e sure you have
addressed all of the items and priorities.
Tips
