'he term is a Sans&rit compound consistin! of sadhy, meanin! 9union:, or more specifically the union or 6unctions of day and ni!ht #hich ta&es place in the mornin! or evenin! t#ili!ht,and vandanammeanin! #orship. .n addition to da#n and dus&, noon is considered the third 6uncture of the day, and hence meditations and prayers are performed daily at those times. But, why do Sandhya at this these times only? .t is these times that one is in an empty stomach #hich is a condition for any spiritual e%ercise. 'he term sadhy is also used by itself in the sense of 9daily practice: to refer to the performance of these devotions at the openin! and closin! of the day. 'hese are havin! their lords as Bhoodevi, ,aruna, 2!ni, .ndra and ,ayu, #ho are the preceptors for these panchabhootas. 2s #e are made up of <anchabhootas, #e have to pray to these lords to !ive us health, peace, happiness etc. and, therefore, pray to them daily. 'he duties en6oined in us to#ards these devas are called 1eva (unam or debt to 1evas.
