uptotheadministratortodeterminewhichvolumesareneededforacompletebackupset.
Forexample,thecompletebackupsetforanExchangeServerwithseparatedatabase
volumesandlogvolumesforastoragegrouprequiresthemanualselectionofallvolumes
andlogsforthestoragegroup.Therefore,theadministratormustknowtheexactlayout
andlocationofallstoragegroupcomponentstocreateausablebackupset.
TheLocalVolumesoptionisprimarilyintendedforbackingupandrestoringvolumefile
andprintenvironmentswherethefilesareflatthatis,thefilesarenotinatransactional
databaselikeenvironment.Serversthatcontainsharedfilesorhomedirectoriescan
leveragetheLocalVolumesbackupsbecausetherestorepointsforlocalvolumescanbe
easilyexposed,allowinganadministratortorecoverfiles.
Note: ResettingtheWindowsIOstructureisnecessaryonlyifyoualsowantto
makethenewvolumeaclusterresource.Youcanrecoverthevolumeonanodeof

location.Bydefault,snapshotsinVSSforSharedFolderstakeplaceat7:00a.m.and12:00
p.m.,andshadowcopiesarereplacedasrequiredbytheamountoffreediskspaceonthe
volume.Thesnapshottimescanbeadjusted,butthesnapshotsshouldrunnomorethan
onceevery60minutes.
AnadvantagethatVSSforSharedFoldersprovidesistheabilityforWindowsXPand
WindowsVistaclientstorecoverfilesfromashadowcopywithoutadministrator
intervention.BycombiningReplayManagerandsomecustomscriptingusingtheDell

isprocessor,memory,anddiskintensive,thisloadisbettersuitedforanonproduction
serversothatverificationdoesnotimpactmissioncriticaloperations.Notealsothat
althoughitispossibletoruntheVerificationServiceoneverysnapshotthatistaken,it
maybemorefeasibletoconsiderverifyingonlyonebackupsetperdaytoprevent

TheRestorefunctionprovidestheeasiestmethodforrecoveringaStorageGroup.By
selectingtherestorepointandthenclickingRestoreBackupSet,theRestoreoperation
accessestherequestedrestorepointandcopiesthetransactionlogsanddatabases
containedwithinthebackupsetbacktotheproductionvolumes.UsingRestore
requiresadismountoftheexistingStorageGroupanddatabasessincetheRestore
replacesallStorageGroupcomponents.Dependingonthesizeofthedatabase,thiscan
beatimeconsumingoperationasdataiscopiedfromonevolumetoanother.Thisone
clickapproachiseasyforadministratorstouse;howeverRestoreprovidesonlyapoint

machinesthathaveasinglevirtualmachinediskfile(.vmdk)orthathavemultiple.vmdk

recoveryandmostefficientuseofrawstorage.
Restore Action
Insteadofexposingthedatastoreforlargescaleorrapidimagelevelrecovery,theRestore
actionautomaticallydeletestheexistingvirtualmachinesbeingrestoredandthenrestores
thevirtualmachinesindividuallybyusingacopyoperationfromaViewvolumebackto
itsoriginallocation.TheRestoreactionisonlysupportedbytheVMwareVirtualMachines
backupextensionandisfullyautomated.
BecauseRestoreisabulkcopyoperation,availableblocksarewrittentoasnewaccording
tothestorageprofileappliedtothevolume.UsingtheStorageCenterdefaults,thevirtual
machinesarecopiedintoTier1storageregardlessofwheretheblocksexistedpreviously.
Themainbenefitofthismethodisthatitprovidesautomatedvirtualmachinerecoveryat
theexpenseofstorageefficiencyandRecoveryTimeObjective(RTO).

AnydatawrittenafterthesnapshotoccurredandbeforethevolumeReplaywascreated
willnotbeapplicationordataconsistent.Rather,thedatawillbecrashconsistent.
IftheapplicationneedstoberecoveredwithVSSconsistency,followthestepsdescribed
inRestoreDatawithVSSConsistencyonpage80toreverttothepreviousvSphere
snapshotandthendeletethevSpheresnapshotusingthevSphereClient.
Ifapplicationordataconsistencyisnotrequiredfordisasterrecoverypurposes,the
virtualmachinesattherecoverysitemaybeimmediatelypoweredoninavSphere
snapshotstate.However,itisnotadvisabletoallowvirtualmachinestocontinue
runningforextendedperiodsoftimeinasnapshotstate.ThevSpheresnapshotsfor
eachvirtualmachineshouldbecommittedanddeletedassoonaspossible.
Storage vMotion
vSphereenablestheabilityofavirtualmachinetomigratebetweenhostsusingvMotion
andbetweenstorageusingStoragevMotion.vMotionwillnotcreateanyissuesforReplay
ManageraslongasallvSpherehostsarezonedandmappedtothenecessaryvolumes,
however,therearesomeusageconsiderations.
ReplayManagerjobsusingtheVMwareVirtualMachinesbackupextensionarenot
impactedbyStoragevMotionaslongastheStoragevMotiondestinationisaStorage
CenterconfiguredinReplayManager.EverytimeaReplayManagerjobusingthis
extensionisrun,ReplayManagerwillupdatethevirtualmachinesfilelocation(s)as
necessarybeforeperformingthejob.TheReplayManagerjobwillbeupdatedaccordingly
andnoactionwillberequiredoftheadministrator.
Storage DRS
vSphereStorageDRS(alsoknownasSDRS)leveragestheStoragevMotionfeaturewhen
configuredforfullyautomatedmode.
VMware Tools
vSpheresnapshotsleverageandrelyontheVMwareToolsinstallationinsideoftheguest
virtualmachineforVSSintegrationtoobtainapplicationanddataconsistentsnapshots.A
VMwareToolsfailurewilllikelyresultinthefailureofaReplayManagerjoband/orwill
negativelyaffectthenecessaryapplicationanddataconsistencydesiredinaReplay.
Note: Thismustbedonebeforethevirtualmachineispoweredonautomaticallyby
SRMormanuallythroughhumanintervention.
Caution: DonotusetheVMwareDatastoresbackupextensionifyouareusing
