backupsusingtheMicrosoftVolumeShadowCopyServices(VSS).Therearetwotypesof
VSSbackups:
Copybackupbacksupallfiles,includingallapplicationandlogfilesontheselected
volume(s).Allinformationonwhichfileswerechangedordeletedispreserved;
therefore,copybackupsdonotaffectthesequenceofincrementalanddifferential
backupsthatmighthappenindependentofthecopybackup.
Fullbackupmaytruncatetransactionallogfilesafterthebackupfinishesdependingon
theapplication.Oncealltransactionsfromalogareappliedtothedatabase,the
databasesetsacheckpoint(oramarker)tothelastcommittedtransaction.Oncethe
checkpointisset,thelogsthathavebeenappliedmaybetruncated,ordeleted.

createaseparatebackupsetforcomponentsthatarelikelytobedeleted,moved,or

renamingsourcecomponentsrequiresthecreationofanewbackupset:

Onceabackupsetiscreated,componentscannotbeaddedordeleted.Createnew
backupsetstoaccommodatechangedcomponents.
Renamingsourcecomponentsbreaksassociationofsourcedataandbackupset

Guidelines for Backup Jobs
ReplayManagerqueuesamaximumof10jobsatatime.Forthisreason,donotsubmit
morethan10backupjobs(usingaschedule,ascript,ormanually)atatime.
Ifthequeuereachesmorethanfivejobs,warningeventsareloggedintheWindows
EventLog.
Ifthequeuereaches10jobs,theexcessjobsarediscardedandanerrorstatusisposted
totheWindowsEventLogindicatingthatthequeuehasstoppedacceptingjobs.
ReplayManagerdoesnotcheckthenumberofsimultaneouslyscheduledjobswhen

Transport-to-Server Scenarios
Transportingarestorepointacrossdifferentoperatingsystemversionsispossibleonly
whenthefilesystemfeaturesofthesourceserverarecompatiblewiththetargetserver.
Whenpossible,ReplayManagerExplorerpreventsanadministratorfromtransportinga
restorepointtoanincompatibletargetserverbygrayingoutincompatibleserversinthe
ChooseTargetServerdialogbox.However,ifReplayManagerExplorerdoesnothave

UsingtheLocalVolumesoption,anadministratorcanuseVSStocreatebackupsof
applicationswithoutusingaReplayManagerapplicationspecificextension;however,itis
uptotheadministratortodeterminewhichvolumesareneededforacompletebackupset.
Forexample,thecompletebackupsetforanExchangeServerwithseparatedatabase
volumesandlogvolumesforastoragegrouprequiresthemanualselectionofallvolumes
andlogsforthestoragegroup.Therefore,theadministratormustknowtheexactlayout
andlocationofallstoragegroupcomponentstocreateausablebackupset.
TheLocalVolumesoptionisprimarilyintendedforbackingupandrestoringvolumefile
andprintenvironmentswherethefilesareflatthatis,thefilesarenotinatransactional
databaselikeenvironment.Serversthatcontainsharedfilesorhomedirectoriescan
leveragetheLocalVolumesbackupsbecausetherestorepointsforlocalvolumescanbe
easilyexposed,allowinganadministratortorecoverfiles.
Note: ResettingtheWindowsIOstructureisnecessaryonlyifyoualsowantto
makethenewvolumeaclusterresource.Youcanrecoverthevolumeonanodeof
aclusterwithoutresettingtheIOstructureandstilluseitasanonclustereddisk.

Insteadofexposingthedatastoreforlargescaleorrapidimagelevelrecovery,theRestore
actionautomaticallydeletestheexistingvirtualmachinesbeingrestoredandthenrestores
thevirtualmachinesindividuallybyusingacopyoperationfromaViewvolumebackto
itsoriginallocation.TheRestoreactionisonlysupportedbytheVMwareVirtualMachines
backupextensionandisfullyautomated.
BecauseRestoreisabulkcopyoperation,availableblocksarewrittentoasnewaccording
tothestorageprofileappliedtothevolume.UsingtheStorageCenterdefaults,thevirtual

VMwareSiteRecoveryManager(SRM)providesanautomateddisasterrecoverysolution
forvSpherevirtualizeddatacenters.WhenintegratedwithDellCompellentStorage
Center,ReplaysareusedbySRMtoregisterandpoweronvirtualmachinesduringthe
recoveryprocessattheremotesiteandassuchReplayseffectivelyrepresenttheRecovery

impactedbyStoragevMotionaslongastheStoragevMotiondestinationisaStorage
CenterconfiguredinReplayManager.EverytimeaReplayManagerjobusingthis
