President's Message

We had an exciting summer at the Richmond Branch
starting with our Bi-Annual Member Appreciation and
Recognition Event at the Isley Brewing Company,
followed by a Joint Social with local Branches of
WTS, VASITE, and ASHE, a meeting held at the
Tredegar Center, and most recently a Membership
Event at the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The
Richmond Flying Squirrels game was held onThursday
August 7
th
against the Binghamton Mets. It was a
great networking event for our ASCE members, and it
was a packed stadium with fireworks on the agenda.
Be on the lookout for more networking events like
this in the future, and we hope to see you there!
Unfortunately (or fortunately for any Northerners out there) we are approaching the
end of summer, but that means a new school year and a new Board transition in the
Richmond Branch. I want to thank our departing Board Members for their years of
service to the Branch. Amy Bird served as our Past President and Caleb Lange as our
Vice President, and we are sad to see them go. Caleb he has moved to Fredericksburg,
VA to accept a new position within his company, so congratulations and good luck to
him! There is no rest for Amy as she is transitioning to Chair of the Richmond Joint
Engineers Council. We wish both of them all the best, and I cannot say enough how
invaluable their time has been with our Branch. I would also like to welcome our new
Board members including Chris Friend as Co-Younger Member Chair, Carolyn Desrochers
as Co-Younger Member Chair, Loai El-Gazairly as the Government Relations Chair, Ryan
Abalos as Co-Education Chair, and Jeremy Kraft as the Membership Chair. I encourage
you to get to know our Board by visiting our website at ASCERichmond.org under the
"HOME" Tab. There you will find the contact information for each Board member if you

October 4th through October 5th
(6:30 pm - 9 am)

DuPont is sponsoring the 15th Annual Girls in Science Camp In through a partnership with the
Science Museum of Virginia and the Society of Women Engineers. Every year approximately 150
middle school girls participate in the overnight event designed to promote an interest in science
and engineering.

30 women volunteers are needed on Saturday, October 4th from 6-11 pm to help with the
event.

Volunteers will help with logistics and run activities for groups of ~20 people (students &
chaperones). Hands-on activities allow the girls to understand circuits and to create parallel
circuit bracelets with LEDs.

Training will be given prior to the event (Date/Time TBA). All activities are easy to execute and
supplies will be provided. A technical background is not required.
Please use the attached flyer to post in your office or to distribute to anyone interested in
participating in this year's program. NOTE: All volunteers must be 19 or older or accompanied by
an adult.

To volunteer: Please contact Irene Meglathery atIrene.F.Meglathery@dupont.com or 804-383-
4829 by September 26th.

If you know of a middle school girl who would like to attend, please call the Science Museum of
Virginia at (804) 864-1400 or 800-659-1727 to register. Thanks to a generous grant from DuPont,
the cost for the program is only $10 per girl! For every four girls, one adult chaperone is required
and admitted free. This program fills up quickly, so please register as soon as possible.
