Phase I 16 hrs
Reviewof governingEquations of fluiddynamics andrelevant PDE theory, classificationof PDEs andphysical implications, special cases
of Navier-Stokes andtheir classification. Introductionto numerical methods, Properties of numerical solutionmethods: errors, consistency,
accuracy, stability, convergence, conservation.
Lab Components: Introduction to MATLAB and ANSYS Fluent
Phase II 20hrs
Panel methods, Finitewingtheory, Simplifiedhorseshoevortex, Prandtl liftinglinetheory, Swept anddeltawings, Computational methods
for finitewings. Introductiontothefinitedifferenceandfinitevolumediscretizationapproaches.
Lab Components: Computing panel methods and finite wing theory
Phase III 24 hrs
Introduction to grid generation, body conforming grids, algebraic and elliptic grids; 2D unstructured grids. Solution methods for
incompressibleflows; Solutionmethodsfor compressibleflows. Examples: IncompressibleCouetteFlow, Numerical solutionsof Quasi- 1D
nozzleflows, Numerical Solutionof atwodimensional supersonicflow ( Prandtl-Meyer ExpansionWave)
Lab Components: Simulation of incompressible and compressible flow over external objects such as flow over cylinder, flow over
airfoil, flow over nose cone based on Navier Stokes equation
