The Mystery of the Saving Cross

T
he Gospel today focuses on the Cross
as the symbol of Gods forgiving love.
For God so loved the world that
He gave His only Son. . . that whosoever
believes in Him shall have eternal life.
(John 3:16).
The Cross of Jesus, our Lord, has many
meanings. It signifies the inhumanity of
man as shown in the inhuman acts of men
and in the dehumanizing situations they
create as experienced by Jesus Himself
during His passion and death in the hands
of the unbelieving Jews. However, the
Cross also shows the humanity of God who
experienced suffering and death for his
love for the world.
The Cross of Jesus also symbolizes
sufferings salvific value. In Christian
spirituality, suffering is a reaction to pain
whereby the believer, in this case the
sufferer, offers God his sacrifice of praise.
This shows how the creature or sufferer
offers his pain to his Creator, while the
value of suffering is that the believer who
suffers in his pain unites himself with
Christ in His sufferings and in the process,
becoming more like Christ.
God knows the world is marked
indelibly, often brutally, by sin: but God
loves this world in which too often evil
dominates and prevails over good. And He
wants to save this world, thus, He sent His
only Son so that sinful men and women
might find light.
In their journey in the desert, the
Israelites who complained against God and
Moses were bitten by poisonous snakes
and died. But those who looked up to
the bronze serpent set up by Moses on a
standard, lived. (cf Numbers 21)
So, also anyone in this evil world who
looks up to Jesus lifted up on the Cross and
believes in Him, will have eternal life. Thus,
we can truly say that the Cross of Christ
symbolizes eternal life as God wills that
everyone shall be saved.
And for us, followers and believers of
Jesus, the Cross should mean that we have
to accept that evil exists in this world, and
we have to show our love and concern
for this sinful world by making Christs
compassionate, life-giving and universal
Love present.
This Love of Christ will be concretely
demonstrated in 2015 when Pope Francis,
the Vicar or Representative of Christ here
on earth, comes to the Philippines this
January 15-19, 2015. This Apostolic visit
tells the world how Christ in the person of
His Vicar manifests His compassionate, life-
giving and universal love for us, Filipinos,
especially for those who suffered much
and are still suffering in the aftermath of
typhoon Yolanda. We need to realize that
the coming of Pope Francis is not only for
the Roman Catholics, but for all believers
and unbelievers of Jesus, alike. In this visit,
the Pope challenges each and every one
of us to be merciful and compassionate,
especially to our suffering brothers and
sisters. We pray that this mercy and
compassion translates to an awareness
about Jesuss loving care for them, and
thus give meaning to their lives. We pray
that this awareness of Christs care will
make them persevere and endure in their
suffering, and thus hopefully move them
to put their trust in God. In this way, their
suffering becomes more life giving.
Again, when we look up to the Cross of
Christ, we are reminded of the inhumanity
of man and the humanity of God, the value
and meaning of suffering and Gods will
to save everyone. But God respects our
freedom of choice: to look towards the Cross
or go away from it, to embrace suffering or
abhor it, to be life-giving or not.

Isa sang mga daku nga sala sang

ginatawag sa Ingles nga "detraction" ukon
ang pagsugid sang matuod nga kapaltahan

he JPYM held its Sports Fest 2014
Opening Program last September
6, 2014, Saturday. Twelve teams
participated: Brgy. Simon Ledesma, Taft
North, San Vicente, Tabuc Suba-Ilaya,
Benedicto, Tabuc Suba-Proper, Calubihan
and Taytay Zone 2, Bakhaw, Democracia,
San Roque and Cuartero. The Acolytes and
Himig Katedral Choir also participated.
In the morning, we had a Symposium
on Drug Addiction. The speakers were Ms.
Jo Agudo, Ma. Lucy Sinay, P/Supt. Gilbert
Gorrero, Alfredo Villanueva, and Paul
Ledesma, PDEA Regional director. They are
the members of the Iloilo City Task Force of
Anti Drug Abused Education. They gave us
valuable information about drug addiction.
We learned that we must not just say no
to drugs but we need to stay away from
it. Director Paul Ledesma explained to us
the legal consequences of drug addiction.
An intermission number was given by the
Campus Youth Ministry members. The
most interesting part was the Open Forum.
Questions were raised by the participants
like: Sa isa ka barangay, may balay nga
ginahimo nga drug den. Sang ginsugid
na sa pulis naghatag lang sila advice nga
hulaton lang nga nagadrug session gid sila.
Eksakto bala ini ukon sala?; Ngaa ang mga
nadakpan kag napreso after mga 3 months
makagwa man gihapon sa prisohan?;
Kon mag-raid kamo sang drug den diin
nagakadto ang mga items nga nakuha
nyo?; kag, Ngaa ang mga gagmay lang nga
drug pushers ang ginadakop ninyo, indi ang
mga drug lords?. Some questions were not
sang iban, tungod sa mga huring-huring
kag mga pabati-bati, nga nagabunga sang
suspetsa, pangduhadoha, rash judgment,
kag ang pagbasulay nga wala man lang sing
matuod nga basehan.
Agud malikawan ini tanan, maayo
gid nga aton dumdumon ang pila ka
mga importante nga butang: Una, ang
kamatuoran isa ka malahalon nga bagay
nga dapat tipigan. Gani, may obligasyon ang
tanan nga mangin tampad kag magsugid
sang matuod. Ang mas mabug-at nga rason
agud mahilway sa sini nga obligasyon
amo ang obligasyon sa paghigugma.
Ikaduha, dapat kita magmangin tampad
kag magsugid sang kamatuoran sa mga
tawo nga may kinamatarong sa sini nga
katampad kag kamatuoran. Indi gid man
tanan nga mga tawo ang dapat sugiran
sang bug-os nga kamatuoran, ilabi na gid
kon ini nga mga tawo mahilig magkutso-
kutso, ukon mahalitan man lang ang iban
kon sugiran sang kamatuoran. Ikatlo,
ang kaayuhan sang kalabanan, kon kaisa
nagapamilit nga isugid ang kamatuoran,
bisan pa ini makahalit sa mga abyan kag
kaparyentihan, ilabi na gid ang pagpanaksi
sini sa husgado.
Ayhan ang labing daku nga
panghangkat nahanungod sa kamatuoran
amo ang sa patag sang mass media. Una,
ang pangabuhian sang propaganda kag
komersyo nga ang una nga katuyuan amo
ang pagbaligya sang isa ka produkto nga
nagaganyat nga ipahayag ang mga bagay
nga amo ang makapatigayon sini, bisan
pa nga ina nga pagpahayag indi suno sa
kamatuoran. Ikaduha, ang mga peryodiko,
radyo, kag telebisyon amo ang tig-una nga
ginahalinan sang impormasyon para sa
ordinaryo nga Pilipino. Gani ang mass
media may katungdanan nga magmangin
tampad, matuod, balanse kag may pagtahud
sa kamatuoran sa ila pagbantala sang mga
balita. Dapat man sila maghagan-hagan kag
balanse sa ila paghukom sa iban.
Sa katapusan, bilang mga Pilipino nga
Katoliko, ginatawag kita nga mangin saksi
kay Ginuong Jesukristo sa tanan nga mga
tawo. Bilang sumulunod ni Kristo nga amo
ang kamatuoran mismo, suno kay San Pablo
sa iya sulat kay Timoteo, "Indi kamo dapat
magkahuya sa inyo pagpanaksi sa Ginuo."
T
he conversation with the members
of the Parish Pastoral Secretariat last
September 10 was grace-filled. I was
able to listen to their many experiences
in establishing and strengthening the
Magagmay nga Kristianong Katilingban in
the different barangays within our parish.
Listening to them, I had a glimpse of their
struggles and difficulties. This gave me the
realization that these pastoral workers are
really giving a lot of service to the parish.
They are making a lot of sacrifices so that
the MKK will thrive and move forward. I
realized that I must always include them
in my prayers as a sign of my gratitude to
them.
What struck me most during the
conversation was their openness in
revealing their need for break or rest,
as the pastoral work may be arduous at
times. For me, its more than the needed
break. Its more than the needed respite.
I told them that perhaps, More than
the break, what they are seeking is the
meaning of what they are doing.
As I continue to reflect upon our
sharing, I realized that meaning is
important as it gives sense to our existence
and purpose. It revitalizes and empowers
us to do something because we know the
reason of what we are doing.
C
stands for CHRIST. It is Christ we are
bringing to the people we serve. St.
Paul would say, "...For we do not preach
ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and
ourselves as your slaves for the sake of
Jesus" (2Cor 4,5). As we continue to bring
Christ to our people, may we recognize that
we are encountering Christ in them too.
H
stands for HOPE. The situation in the
barangays may be difficult but let us
remember that we are Gods workers in His
vineyard. As Gods co-laborers, let us give
our best efforts as a sign of our lively hope.
There must be no room for discouragement.
Rather, we rely on God with the hope that
all shall be well.
A
stands for ASSURANCE. God assures
us of His presence, of His constant
accompaniment. He is our strength, our
firm foundation. Hence, we should not be
afraid as God promises to be with us always.
When we find pastoral work burdensome,
Using the word CHARM as an acronym,
perhaps these insights can be helpful
for everyone, especially to our Churchs
leaders seeking for meaning in their
pastoral work.
God invites us to come to Him and He will
give us rest (cf. Mt. 11, 28).
R
stands for RESPECT. Respect to people
and their pacing is very important.
When we show respect to people we meet,
we establish an harmonious relationship
with them which can be beneficial in
actualizing the programs we intend to do.
And lastly,
M
stands for MISSION. In the words of
Pope Francis, We are all missionary
disciples. We participate and share in
Christs mission to build Gods Kingdom
among us. Christ must be at the heart of this
mission and not us. At the end of the day,
may we always anchor ourselves in Him in
prayer to renewour sense of mission.
CHARM. Christ, Hope, Assurance,
Respect and Mission. As we celebrate today
the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, may we
fnd lifes meaning and purpose in the light of
the Cross of Christ. ato page 3

entertained because of time constraint. We
took our lunch and prepared for the parade
around the Jaro Plaza. The Jaro National
High Schools Tribu Salognon drummers
gave more life to our parade.
We started our afternoon program with
a doxology by the Brgy. Benedicto Youth
Ministry Members. They interpreted the
song, I See You Lord. Then, Fr. Nathaniel
Gentizon, Youth Director said the opening
remarks wherein he thanked the young
people for their enthusiastic participation
and encourage them to be part of the
solution rather than of the problem on
drug addiction. Glenn Micheal Puga led
the Torch Run while Pearl Joy Majarucon,
the new Assistant Worship Coordinator,
led the Sportsmanship Oath. Our youth
participants cheered as the Mr. and Ms.
JPYM Exemplars candidates walked and
showed their beauty inside and out during
the production number and sports attire
portions of the search. Group teams
showed off their skills in Three-Point shot,
Free Throw, Assist and Dribbling. Team
Cuartero got the highest score and was
declared winner.
The most awaited part of the program
was the Cheer Dance Competition. Four
teams participated. Brgy. Tabuc Suba Ilaya
Youth Ministry was awarded as Champion;
Brgy. Simon Ledesma Youth Ministry as
First place; Brgy. Bakhaw Youth Ministry
as second place; and Brgy. Benedicto Youth
Ministry got the third place.
Through the JPYM Sports Fest,
we witness the unity and cooperation
of our talented young people as they
enthusiastically participated in the activity.
All the Brgy. Youth Coordinators and their
Assistants made good in organizing their
members. The Jaro Parish Youth Ministry
Council members express deepest thanks
especially to those who generously offered
financial help and prayed for good weather
and for the success of the event. The Sports
Fest 2014 has been fruitful and meaningful
because of God who is the center of our
service and passion. To God be all the Glory
and Love!
I was the chef during the time of
Msgr. Sin, our beloved parish priest.
Every time I went upstairs, a saying
posted on the wall of the convent
catches my attention. It says Small
minds discuss people. Big minds
discuss events. I was wondering what
it meant. Then Msgr. Sin explained to me
the meaning. Small ideas discuss people
is equivalent to making tsismis while
big ideas discuss events, cover a wider
scope with intelligent ideas. What is
being discussed by people are big events
of great importance in life. This saying
remained in my memory which taught
me a good lesson to live by.

he one-month session
of our Parish Faith
Formation Program on
Mariology is about to end. We
learned that Mariology is the
study of the life of the Blessed
Virgin Mary. It centers mainly
on the Catholic ecclesiological
movement in theology,
emphasizing the role of Mary
in the Church.
The sessions were very
meaningful and interesting.
We were enlightened of some
doctrines which we thought
are, but are not. We were
introduced to some new
terms such as Virgin Birth,
in the state of Sanctifying
Grace, Special Intervention,
Anticipation, Perpetual
Virginity, and Proto
Evangelium of St. James.

devotees is that the Blessed
Virgin Mary was, is and will
always be our Loving Mother
and Intercessor.

Philippines for the 6

Asian Youth
Day in Daejeon, South Korea.
The Asian Youth Day (AYD) is a
weeklong event organized by the Youth
Desk of the Office of the Laity and Family
of the Federation of Asian Bishops
Conference (FABC). It brings together
Catholic youths from all over Asia for
fellowship and spiritual growth.
The recent AYD is actually the 6
th

one. The 1
st
AYD was held in Hua Hin,
Thailand in 1999; the 2
nd
one was in
Taipei, Taiwan in 2001; the 3
rd
was in
Bangalore, India in 2003; the 4
th
was
in Hong Kong, China in 2006; and the
5
th
was in Imus, Philippines last 2009.
Hosted by the Diocese of Daejeon, South
Korea under the leadership of Most Rev.
Lazzaro You Heungsik, the 6
th
AYD was
indeed an experience very difficult to
forget, for it was in essence a moment of
communion with God for the individual
person, and with one another as
brothers and sisters in Asia.
Guided by the theme, Asian Youth!
Wake Up! The Glory of the Martyrs Shines
on You, we gathered to remember the
roots of our faith, to re-discover the faith
that we may have lost, and to walk along
with Jesus and the Martyrs as witnesses
in todays world.
This years Asian Youth Day was
especially blessed and significant
because of the presence of the Holy
Father, Pope Francis. It is actually the
first AYD to be graced by the personal
presence the Pope. Hence, the Catholic
Bishops Conference of Korea (CBCK)
really put their best foot forward for this
celebration. All Catholics, and perhaps
even non-Catholics, put their act
together in order to present to everyone
I couldnt help crying the first time
I saw the Pope in person. It is really
different when you see him in television.
For me, that was a tremendous grace! I
was so thankful that I was there - seeing
and listening to the Vicar of Christ
despite the many limitations and
challenges which I experienced prior to
the AYD. Indeed, my participation in the
AYD was really Gods will because He
Himself made the way for me to be there.
I hope and pray that with this once-in-
a-lifetime experience, my ministry as a
priest will be a reflection of what Pope
Francis assures the young the Churchs
love, support and accompaniment!
As to the Koreans, they really felt the
love of the Holy Father. Their country is
the first country to be visited by the Holy
Father in Asia. Many are praying that his
apostolic visit will pave the way for the
reconciliation of North and South Korea;
enkindle the faith, hope and charity
of the young who may be influenced
by materialism, consumerism and
hedonism; and bring back to the
embrace of our Catholic Church those
who are astray from the sheep-fold of
Catholicism.
Finally, I would like to thank His
Grace, Most Rev. Angel N. Lagdameo, D.D.,
and Rev. Fr. Rafael Luis Clavel, Director of
Jaro Archdiocesan Commission on Youth
for recommending to the Episcopal
Commission on Youth (ECY) me and my
companion, Ms. Elaine Grace Capalla, a
youth minister from Our lady of Pillar
Parish, MH. Del Pilar Jaro, Iloilo City.

us to lovingly and continuously journey
with our young people. Believing in their
goodness and capacity, let us empower
our youth to become joyful proclaimers
of the Gospel.

I believe that the Koreans best was not just
in their capacity to systematically organize a
big event nor in their wonderful performances
during the festival which amazed many of
us, but their best was shown through their
generosity especially of the young people
who volunteered from the Days in the Diocese
(August 10-12) and AYD Proper (13-17) and
treated us with magnanimity even when they
were already tired and exhausted. There
was never a time that they have spoken rude
or harsh words. Instead, they were always
smiling and ready to listen, accommodate, and
respond to the needs of a particular person
at a particular moment. Organizing a big
event like that and making it very orderly and
meaningful is a tough work, but the Koreans
just did it. Everything was great because of
their love, prayer, cooperation and unity.
Thus, by the time we went back to our
respective arch/dioceses, all of us have a common
feeling: we miss one anothers company! (I really
miss my group mates!) The AYD has just given
us many opportunities to get to know other
young people from other Asian countries and get
acquainted their situation, on how they live their
faith even amidst trials and persecutions. Indeed,
we had wonderful moments in establishing
and strengthening our relationships with one
another with Jesus in our midst in the spirit of
communion and solidarity. As early as now, we
even look forward to the next AYD in the year
2017 in Indonesia.
My sharing with you of my AYD experience
wouldnt be substantially complete without
telling you of the effects of the presence of the
Holy Father, Pope Francis, to me and to others,
especially to the Koreans. His presence was
indeed a great blessing for it signifies the
whole Churchs love and support for the young
whom, the Holy Father in his homily during the
culminating Mass, considers are not just the
future of the Church but her present.

Live! Love! Learn!
T
his is the time to join hands and
move together as one, towards a
new dawn- building a community of
love and brotherhood giving no time for
vices, crimes abuses and selfish ambition
to destroy our future.
This is the time for prayers and honest
labor the time to come down from
our high perch and take the hand of one
another a real Christianity in action.
It is very beautiful and touching to
know that the owners of the Sacred Heart
School at the Felix Gorriceta Avenue at
Balabag, Pavia, are not only interested
in the education of our children, but are
philanthropists, who had a school chapel
built, and a hospital for women and
children.
I can say that they are devout Catholics
who inject God in everything they do.
Humble and friendly, they welcomed
hundreds of people last Monday, who
attended the Mass for the Blessed Virgins
birthday, the celebration of the fourth
anniversary of the schools foundation,
and the Ground-Breaking ceremony of the
hospital.
That get-together was a real picture
of community building, cooperation and
exemplary relationship.
The Mass was officiated by Msgr.
Sosonte Catalua of the seminary, assisted
by six priests. The choir was composed of
senior seminarians. Nuns from the Mensa
Domine of Pavia, led by Sr. Ma. Edralyn
T. Tocol, were also there. Students from
different schools, wearing school uniforms
were also present. Offerings of different
kinds were done by adults and children.
Hundreds received Holy Communion.
After the religious group, the
government sector led by Mayor Mike
Gorriceta some councilors barangay
kagawads and other personnel, composed
the political group.
Some commercial groups also graced
the occasion traders from the city and
some neighboring towns.
The Principal, Mrs. Mendoza, and the
teachers became voluntary usherettes who
made everybody comfortable and friendly.
I was touched when I saw everybody
enjoying and rubbing elbows with one
another comfortably. We need occasions
like this; where educational institutions,
government personnel, commercial
groups, social sectors and religious groups
join hands in making our community a
beautiful and prosperous place especially
in relationships.
When Mrs. Mendoza gave time to me, I
told her that if we could give value formation
seminars to the students they could become
adept at leadership and become assets in
community building. We planned to meet
sometime this week to discuss the seminar,
the process, the lectures and relationships
This formation seminar which I gave to
the pupils of the Pototan Pilot Elementary
School when I was teaching there, gave
beautiful results and Mr. Vicente Luntao,
our District Supervisor, had a grotto built
beside the stage because he was impressed
by our pupils, who prayed the Rosary every
afternoon after classes. Student leadership
and cooperation especially during extra-
curricular activities, was obvious and
strong.
October is the month of the Holy
Rosary. May this devotion spread to all
communities. With the Blessed Virgin Mary
as our intercessor, we will soon experience
a positive change in our lives a grace that
we will feel as we go on with our earthly
mission.

Weeks ago, I found myself looking at
the picture of the old parochial house with
a heavy heart. It is different now! Every
time I am at the cathedral to participate
in a Mass or even when just passing by,
it is the picture of the newly constructed
building I imagine. I am so glad and
excited to think I will be seeing, it soon.
I also believe many are with me always
hoping and praying donations will come
pouring in to hasten and make possible
the completion of our project. Are you still
there benevolent hearts?
I believe building a new parochial
house is the next necessary project after
the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral. If you
have given your loving support to the
church years ago, why not continue your
much needed generosity for the parochial
house?
We are all aware how big a project
the parochial house construction is, but
with our continued support and prayers, I
believe it can be realized soon. The project
is greatly dependent on your generosity.
Let us do our best to make this one more
dream of the Parish come true.

CL Staff Celebrates Mama Marys B-day
S
eptember 8 is a special day to all Catholics
because it is Mama Marys birthday. It
is also doubly special to the CL editorial
team because all our weekly efforts at putting
out the Candle Light for all our parishioners are
dedicated to her, our Mother, our Light and our
energy.
To celebrate her birthday and to give honor
to her, the CL Staff attended the 5:30 pm Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass celebrated by Fr. Nathaniel
Gentizon. During the incensation within the
Mass, we offered flowers at the Altar in her
honor. Tata Joy happily took pictures. After
the Mass, Fr. Nat, our editor-in-chief, led the
CL Staff - Doc Bing, Armand, Anna Shiela, Bogs,
Fe, Ching, Lalaine, and Albert - towards the
Boardwalk complex to dine at the Punot Resto.
Evelyn went with Fr. Ronalds pastoral ministry
group. The celebration was exuberantly enjoyed
by everyone. It was an occasion for us to give
honor to Mama Mary as token of praise and
thanksgiving for her obedient Fiat to God the
Father. We do remember that her Fiat opened
the gateway for the birth of her Son, our Lord,
Jesus Christ, our promised Messiah, the Savior
of Mankind.
With Mama Marys birthday, we also
remember our hope and desire to imitate her life,
to be like her, and to instill in our consciousness
her vocation, which is to be obedient to the
will of our Father in Heaven. We are thankful
to her for inspiring us to dedicate to her all our
efforts at Candle Light. Our sacrifices, our time
and resources spent are light in comparison to
the indescribable joy and blessings we receive
as part of the Candle Light editorial team. To all
our readers, we enjoin you to pray with us in her
honor for her Son, for Candle Light, our weekly
link with Mary, and Marys weekly link with us.
