1. Overview

A programmable cam switch detects an angle via an absolute encoder rather than through control via a
mechanical cam and is an electronic cam that turns output ON/OFF in accordance with the angle set.

This product has the following features:

1) Models can be selected in accordance with the
scale of control.

There are 3 models as distinguished by the
number of output points: FC-81F-C-1 with 8 points,
FC-161F-C-1 with 16 points, and FC-321F-C-1
with 32 points.

2) Stage replacement is easily performed.

8-bank (FC-161F-C-1) and 10-bank (FC-321F-C-
1) program registration is possible, and selection
of a given program with bank input is possible.

3) Fine adjustment of the angle for ON/OFF output
while the device is running is possible.

Fine adjustment of the angle for ON/OFF output
while the device is running is possible without
stopping machinery in adjustment mode.

4) External home position writing is possible.

Home position correction with remote operation and while the device is running is possible via external
home position input.

5) There are convenient special functions.

* Pulse output settings (except the FC-81F-C-1)
There are pulse output settings to set what pulse to output in 1 revolution besides functions to set
output to ON/OFF in the range of the angle of revolution (divided output).
* Timing
These functions automatically correct the mechanical response delay proportionate to the speed of
revolution (except the FC-81F-C-1).
* Copying (except the FC-81F-C-1)
These functions save, replay, and check programs between cam switches and between banks.
* Protect settings
Extremely detailed protect settings can be entered for output settings.

6) There are communications functions (except the FC-81F-C-1)*

An RS-232C communications port is provided, and settings with a computer or programmable controller
and an activation monitor can be used.

7) There are protect functions to prevent operational errors.

These functions prevent rewriting of programs via operational errors of an operator by means of turning
protect input ON.

8) Angle/Speed of revolution displays are easily switched.

The angle displays and speed of revolution display are easily switched only by pressing the Display

4-2. Precautions upon Mounting

(1) Provide surroundings so that ventilation and space for maintenance are sufficient.
(2) Regulate the temperature so that ambient temperature does not exceed - 10 to +50C.
(3) Avoid installation in the following locations:
* Where ambient temperature exceeds - 10 to +50C.
* Where there is condensation caused by sudden temperature changes.
* Where ambient humidity exceeds 85%.
* Where dust, iron particles, and corrosive gas are present.
* Where the unit is directly subjected to vibrations and impact.
* Where the unit is subjected to direct sunlight
(4) The encoder shaft is retained by precision ball bearings. Use caution since an excessive load on the
shaft will reduce the accuracy and lifetime of the shaft. In addition, do not subject it to impact such as
striking the shaft when mounting the encoder.

Mounting

(1) Insert the FC into the mounting hole from the front of the panel.
(2) Insert the hooked section (b in the diagram) of the mounting bracket into the groove (a in the diagram)
under the projection on the back of the FC and slide it in the direction of the panel.
(3) Fix the mounting bracket to the FC with a machine screw (c in the diagram).

4-3-2. Precautions upon Wiring

(1) Keep the cam switch and its wiring away from any noise sources or power lines. In addition, use noise
filters for noise sources.
(2) Keep the input line, output line, and power line for the cam switch separate and do not route these lines
over the cam switch.
(3) Perform wiring to keep the cable for the absolute encoder separate from other control lines and power
lines.
(4) Provide a point to ground the control panel for the cam switch input common (I.C) and ground it near
the control panel.
Shielded wire for the encoder cable is not connected to the encoder itself or the encoder 0V.
The encoder's 0V terminal and shield are connected to the input common (I.C) via connection of the
connector for the encoder cable to the cam switch.

Connect the machine and control panel with a cable having a nominal area for a conductor of 2-5.5 mm
2
.

*Emergency stop circuit
Form an emergency stop circuit with an external relay circuit so as to keep cam switch malfunctions and
irregular operations from leading to irregular operations for the system as a whole.

*Interlock circuit
Form an interlock circuit externally when controlling reciprocal operations via cam switch output or when
taking into account accidents and damage to machinery due to irregular operations for the cam switch.

*Precautions with respect to fuses
Insert an appropriate fuse between the load power source and output common (OC) for protection of
external equipment and the cam switch itself.

*Measures to handle noise

Use caution with regard to the following points when using equipment or components that produce
electrical noise in the area around the device:

* Install the cam switch and its wiring separate from noise sources to the extent possible.
* Place the power source and ground in separate systems.
* Insert a noise filter in the power source for the equipment that is the noise source.
* Eliminate noise produced by relays and types of switches with elements for condenser and surge
absorption to the extent possible.

Connect a surge killer in parallel with a relay, magnet, bulb, etc. in an AC circuit.

*Precautions with respect to inrush current

A lamp load such as an incandescent bulb causes a large inrush current to flow when ON. When
operating a lamp load, use a lamp with less than 1/10 of the rated output current.
In addition, flow dark current to the lamp or provide control resistance.

*Precautions with respect to the inductive load

Connect a surge killer or diode in parallel with the load when connecting an inductive load to the output.
In addition, do not connect an inductive load in parallel with the input.

5-5. Cam Output/RUN Output

1) Cam Output
*Output operation according to the ON and OFF angles at the output area setting.
*Turning ON startup input in RUN mode or adjustment mode enables output operations.

(1) Output operations and output response time
Setting: When 30 degrees ON / 80 degrees OFF

(2) Control input and cam output (The FC-81F-C-1 does not have bank input).

When switching banks during operation and startup input is OFFON

Switching banks will be effective with the rising edge of the startup input. Accordingly, output
operations will be executed with the settings for the old bank number even when switching bank
input while the startup input is ON.

2) RUN Output
*RUN output will be ON during normal operation in run mode or in adjustment mode. When an
error occurs, RUN output will be turned OFF by the CPU irregularity (there is no relationship to
startup input).

6. Special Functions
6-1. Timing (FC-161F/321F-C-1 only)

This function sets the output ON/OFF angle ahead further in proportion to the speed of revolution for the
encoder. This function is enabled for correction of mechanical systems delay.

In a conventional cam switch, output area setting is performed in response to the speed of individual
revolutions for each bank and is handled by switching banks, though correction of mechanical systems
delay in response to the speed of revolutions in 1 output area setting can be automatically performed
via timing.

1) Timing settings (set with the special function 0)

Outputs 0-7 have timing Setting of timing is performed individually with respect to outputs 0-7.
The speed of revolution for the encoder is set for an n-degree angle (correction) at n rpm.

<2>

<1>

<1> Speed of timing revolution: Minimum unit 10 rpm
Sets the stipulated speed of revolution with respect to an angle to set as the timing angle.

<2> Timing angle units: Minimum unit Minimum resolution (0.5 of a degree with a resolution of 720 and 1
degree with a resolution of 360)
Sets the angle to advance (correct) with the speed of revolution to set as the speed of timing
revolution.

2) Timing operations

(1) Setting timing calculates the timing proportional constant K in the cam switch.
Timing proportional constant K (degrees/rpm) = Timing angle/ Speed of timing revolution

(2) The device measures the speed of revolution every 166.6 ms and calculates the correction angle with
the measured speed of revolution.
Correction angle = Measured speed of revolution Timing proportional constant K

(3) The output ON width (angle) is synchronized with the revolution of the encoder (change for a
resolution of 1) in units for a resolution of 1 so that it does not change, and correction of the output
angle nears the correction angle.

(4) The output angle when correction reaches the correction angle is
Output angle = Output area setting angle - Correction angle
and this will be the output operation as performed with setting of timing.

Output area settings: 30 degrees ON/80 degrees OFF
Timing settings: timing angle 30 degrees/speed of timing revolution 300 rpm

The output angle when correction with timing is
complete with respect to the speed of revolution will
be as shown in the graph on the left.

3) Notes
(1) Output settings (output area settings and pulse output settings)

*Timing will not function for output settings when there is no OFF width of more than a resolution of 2.
More than 1 degree for a resolution of 720
More than 2 degrees for a resolution of 360

(2) Timing (correction) delay with respect to variation in the speed of revolution

*Correction with respect to the speed of revolution for the encoder will be delayed due to the speed of
revolution measurement cycle and correction operations.
*Guidelines for the number of encoder revolutions needed to complete correction are as follows:

number of revolutions = off
Off angle width for output area settings
Speed of revolution for the encoder
Timing proportional constant

(3) Output response time and response speed of revolution

*Response speed of revolution and output response time for outputs 0-7 will change as a result of set
points for timing.

Maximum response revolution speed
rpm
Set points for timing
Output response time
(outputs 0-7)
Resolution of 720 Resolution of 360
1 less than 305 s 500 1000
2 less than 315 s 450 900
3 less than 330 s 400 800
4 less than 350 s 350 700
5 less than 370 s 300 600
6 less than 385 s 250 500
7 less than 415 s 250 500
8 less than 420 s 200 400

(4) Output when encoder revolution stops

The device will be forced to perform output operation with an output area setting of 0 degrees for the
correction angle when the speed of revolution for the encoder slows and stops. However, encoder
stoppage will be detected at a speed of revolution of 0 rpm, so there will be variation in the time for
the speed of revolution measurement cycle of 166.6 ms. Output will vary after a maximum of 333.3
ms from when revolutions stop.

(5) Adjustment of timing settings (adjustment while the device is running)

Adjusting the settings for the timing speed of revolution or timing angle to 0 will cause timing to stop
regardless of the current output status and provide output without timing settings.

33
6-2. Pulse Output Setting (FC-161F/321F-C-1 only)

This function sets what pulse output for 1 revolution to use without turning output ON/OFF in the range of
the revolution angle. (divided output)
The number of pulses that can be set will differ according to the encoder resolution. Outputs to set with this
function with respect to area output settings are know as pulse output settings.

1) Setting (set with the special function 1)

* Output area settings are automatically set via setting of the ON start angle (the output ON angle at the
pulse starting point) and the number of pulses.
* The number of pulses that can be set via resolution is displayed in the table below.

: Setting possible : Setting not possible
Resolution Resolution Number of
pulses

5 45
6 60
8 72
9 90
10 120
12 180

2) Output operation

This operation is the same as for output area settings. Output will be turned ON/OFF in accordance
with the set pulse output settings.

Sample setting: ON start angle = 1 degree / number of pulses = 60 / resolution = 360

3) Notes

* When output area settings are present, pulse output setting is not possible. Perform setting after
erasing output area settings.
* Adjustment in adjustment mode for pulse output settings is not possible.
* When there is no pulse width of more than a resolution of 2, timing is not possible even if timing settings
are entered.
Resolution of 360: Timing is not performed with a setting of 180 pulses.
Resolution of 720: Timing is not performed with a setting of 360 pulses.

7. Communications Functions
(For details, refer to the separate FC Series Communications Reference Manual).

1) System configuration

*FC can communicate as a master only with the copy function.

2) Communications specifications

Item Specification
Link format 1:1 only
Transmission format Half-duplex asynchronous (8-bit transmission, even parity, 1 stop bit)
Transmission RS-232C
Transmission distance under 3 m
Transmission speed 9600bps
Error check Parity
Protocol FC-only

3) Communications protocol
This protocol (means of communication) is an FC-only protocol and is the protocol used by the slave to
respond to queries/requests (task codes) from the master.

The FC only has slave functions and responds to queries/requests (task codes) from the master. The
FC normally awaits receipt of queries/requests and the FC is not able to start communications.
However, the FC operating will, when copying between FCs, be a master when FCs are connected.
