TIANZONG SI-11
Heavenly Gathering
LOCATION
On the scapula, in a tender depression one
third of the distance from the midpoint of
the inferior border of the scapular spine to the inferior
angle of the scapula.
LOCATION NOTE
In practice it may be difficult to palpate the inferior angle of
the scapula. An alternative method of location is to draw an
equilateral triangle with Jianzhen SI-9 and Naoshu SI-10,
after first ensuring that the patients shoulder is relaxed.
NEEDLING
Perpendicular or oblique insertion 0.5 to 1.5 cun.
ACTIONS
Activates the channel and alleviates pain
Moves qi and unbinds the chest and lateral costal region
Benefits the breasts
INDICATIONS
Heaviness and pain of the shoulder, pain of the
scapula, pain and inability to raise the elbow and

arm, pain of the elbow, swelling of the cheek and
submandibular region.
Fullness of the chest and lateral costal region, cough,
pain and swelling of the breast, breast abscess, insuf-
ficient lactation.
COMMENTARY
The indications of Tianzong SI-11 reflect both its location
and its ability to move qi and unbind the chest. It is an
important point for pain of the scapular region whether
due to sprain, painful obstruction, overuse, poor posture,
Liver qi stagnation or referred pain from Gall Bladder
disease, in which cases it is usually found to be acutely
tender on palpation. Lying behind the breast, it is also
used in combination with points such as Shaoze SI-1 and
Shanzhong REN-17 for a wide variety of disorders of the
breast including pain, lumps and insufficient lactation.
COMBINATIONS
Pain of the shoulder and arm: Tianzong SI-11 and
Wangu SI-4 (Supplementing Life).
Pain of the arm: Tianzong SI-11, Jianliao SJ-14 and
Yanggu SI-5 (Supplementing Life).
