EDUCATION
o Pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in
Finance
o Choosing Gonzaga University allowed me to fulfill two of the goals that I had
been working so hard to fulfill. Not only did Gonzaga offer me a prestigious
and solid business finance program to attend, it also allowed me to pursue
my aspirations in competitive golf. Being accepted as a member of the
Gonzaga Mens golf team was a tremendous honor because it has allowed
me to compete in the NCAA, Division I West Coast Conference. Blending my
passion for golf with a degree in Business finance fits in perfectly with my
goal of a career in the golf industry. I have come a long way to become a
Zag. I live in the other side of the country near Toronto, Ontario in Canada.
While there are several Canadian universities that are known to be centers of
excellence for business education, few of them could offer me the golf
experience and opportunities that an American university could offer. Being a
Zag also aligns with all of those things that I have come to value growing up;
the sense of community and giving back, a commitment to God and the focus
on excellence through education.
o My choice to major in Business Administration is one that I made early on in
high school. I have always been fascinated with the world of business and
have held a specific interest in the economy and in the financial markets. My
teachers always commented on my math skills especially when it came to
statistical analysis so business finance always seemed like a logical choice for
me. Majoring in Business Administration will give me an excellent foundation
for a career in the golf industry allowing me to combine my two passions in
life. While it is every amateur golfers dream to make it to the PGA level of
golf, I have had to be realistic and know that I need something solid to fall
back on if I am unable to pursue this dream. A background in Business
Administration will allow me to enter several different areas of the golf
industry including golf course management, the golf equipment market or
tourism.
o A concentration in Business Finance opens the door to other opportunities
that I have always been interested in including banking, financial investing
and financial advising. Knowledge of finance will be invaluable as I pursue my
own career in golf or if I pursue a career in the larger corporations in both the
private and public sectors.

Lessons from the Core Curriculum Courses:
The core curriculum has created a solid foundation of learning for me that has
opened my eyes to a wide variety of topics and concepts. Not only have I been exposed
to the fundamental topics such as University level math, Communication, English
Composition and English literature, I have also been exposed to topics such as Religion
and Philosophy that have allowed me to look at the world and at humanity in a different
way.
The math course taught me to apply math concepts to real world situations, which
made the concepts come alive and make sense. The Communication course helped me
with my anxiety for public speaking and allowed me to develop strategies to share my
ideas with others in an interesting, clear and concise manner. The English Composition
course tapped into a creative side that I did not realize I had and taught me several
different forums for creating and showcasing my work. The English Literature course
allowed me to read more critically, interpret what I was reading with a keen eye and
opened the door to some beautifully written literature, poems and short stories that I
had never read before. The religion courses allowed me to explore the history of
Christianity as well as gain a more insightful understanding of other religions and faiths
Sean Carlino 3
around the world. As the history of these faiths was explored, the stories of
perseverance, bravery and unimaginable suffering were both captivating and humbling.
The philosophy courses exposed me to the thinking of some of the greatest minds known
to man throughout history and forced me to reflect inward about my own beliefs, values
and guiding principles to which I aim to live my everyday life.

The Challenges of the Core Curriculum:
Not all of the core courses came easily to me. I took three of these courses through
online distance education classes. I earned my credits in Applied Calculus, English
Composition and English Literature in this manner. Learning through distance education
may sound easy but it proved to be quite challenging. It taught me to be very disciplined,
organized and accountable. While I am a strong math student, I still found the online
Applied Calculus course to be difficult because there were many circumstances where I
had to rely on my own means to learn concepts. While the instructors were very helpful,
it was up to me to solidify my learning. While this method of learning was very
challenging, it was also very rewarding because it taught me to persevere and to rely on
my own means to learn. While the English Composition and English Literature courses
were also a lot of work they were also rewarding because I feel I produced some of the
best English work I have ever done. Historically, I have not always been a strong English
student but the sheer volume of reading and writing that we did helped to improve my
skills tremendously. While it was time consuming, especially during the summer months,
to do these online courses, I am very proud of my accomplishment of successfully
completing these courses through distance education.

Important Concepts, Skills and Ethical Practices from the Core Courses:
These courses pushed me to look at the bigger picture, to think outside of the box and
to contemplate how our individual actions can make a difference not only in our own
communities but in other communities as well. The culmination of what I have learned in
my core curriculum courses has changed my way of thinking. As a more critical thinker, I
am open to exploring different ideas and considering a variety of concepts about topics. I
am a more self-directed learner so that if I do not have an answer, I have developed the
means to know how to discover it. I have learned to be proud of my religious faith, to
stand up for what I believe in and to respect the faiths of others through open-
mindedness, understanding and discussion. I am more aware of my own values and
ethical practices, realizing that all choices have consequences. It has forced me to look at
how I want to live, how I want others to perceive me and what principles I want to stand
up for. To live honestly, to work diligently, to believe in ones faith, to open ones mind
and to not be judgmental are some of my guiding principles that the core courses have
helped me to define.

Contribution

The variety of experiences I have had in my golfing career, education, community and
work experiences allows me to offer a unique mix of skills to my future employers. I
have set very clear goals for myself at a young age and have worked diligently and
tirelessly to achieve these goals. Playing competitive golf for so many years has taught
me self-reliance, teamwork, mental focus and working under pressure. These are all
very important traits to have in the work force. I have strived to maintain a high GPA
and have set high expectations for my achievements. My community and volunteer
experience has shown my commitment to giving back to the community and my faith. I
have taken on the challenges of learning in a variety of settings outside of my country
and have had to learn to function independently with limited supports and resources.
The lessons I learned from my core curriculum opened my eyes to new topics, concepts
and ways of thinking. It fostered a willingness to explore issues in a more
comprehensive and critical manner and to seek out truths from a variety of sources. I
have become a self-directed learner and have explored a variety of religions as well as
the philosophies of some of the greatest minds known to man. I have formulated my
own standards and goals of daily living and have learned to respect the ideas and ways
of thinking of others. At the risk of sounding clich, I believe I am a well-rounded
student with a solid education and with upstanding personal and work ethics that would
be of interest to my future employer.
