Introduction
Fishing is a popular recreational and economic activity for many throughout the
Caribbean especially along the coastlines. In Trinidad there are two (2) types of
fishing; Deep Sea and Inshore Fishing. Usually, after the fishermen returns to
shore they go to the Fishing Depots to sell their catch. There are many locations for
fishing, one of the more popular is Orange Valley which was investigated for the
Geography S.B.A.
The Aim of the Study
The aim of the study is to find out the Benefits and Importance of fishing to the
Community of Orange Valley.
Location of the Study
Orange Valley, a popular fishing area lies on the West coast of Trinidad. This is a
place with a very small population located in the County of Caroni. Its
Geographical coordinates are 102700North, 612900 West. The areas that
surround Orange Valley are Waterloo (4.4km) , Brickfield (6.9km), Couva
(8.7km), Chaguanas (17.4km), Phoenix Park (15.4km), St. Marys (12.3km) and is
approximately 7km from the Point Lisas Industrial Estate.
Methodology
How data was collected?
Information was obtained by going on a field trip (where primary and secondary
data was obtained) to the actual site where photos were taken, field sketches drawn
and data was collected. The study conducted was through interviews with five (5)
different fishermen. Recordings were made of the statements said and put together.

A field study was done on Wednesday 26
th
June, 2013 between 8:05 a.m. and
10:25 a.m.
Where the data was collected?
The data was collected at the Orange Valley Fish Market, Orange Valley Trinidad
W.I.
