PREFACE
Media is playing vital role in educating and informing people besides providing
entertainment. All India radio is now reaching the majority of people dwelling in every nook and
corner of the country and hence we can say that Radio has truly matured as a medium of
communication and is growing in every way possible. Improvements in technology, competition
and an increased reach of the Radio are all factors responsible for the growth of the Radio.
Radio is being used extensively as a medium of communication and advertising, with bigger
opportunities and greater growth prospects.

For all these purpose, it has been proposed by Directorate, D.G, A.I.R, New Delhi to
conduct the Radio Audience Survey during the first week of February 2011 at 33 places across
the country. At AIR, Allahabad it was conducted among 400 respondents from 400 household
@ 200 HHs, household in rural and 200 HHs, in urban area.

The main emphasis of this survey was on finding out audience of different criteria for
different programmes. To find out the listening trends and requirement of further modification in
the programmes pattern, various criteria such as listening behaviour of respondents belonging
to different socio-economic classified households, usual timing of listening, preferred
programme, actual listening, listeners, needs and expectation have been studied and
analysied.

There should be programme on self-employment scheme. The young peoples

Programme on education should be included in rural programme.

Proper care should be taken during power cut as it affects the reception quality and
create irk among listeners.

Role of modern equipment and technology in the field of agriculture may be


broadcast.

Silence/ pause may not be for a long time in between the programmes.

Summary of Findings
Enumeration:
In the beginning of 2008, an enumeration programme has been conducted all around
Allahabad City and rural areas under primary covering zone. After covering 60 urban blocks
and rural areas, it is estimated that 40.7% of total population having radio sets whereas 63.3%
of population have TV sets. The details of data given in the following table given below:

Survey:
1.

In the Radio Households listening to radio among rural respondents was slightly higher
(71.5 per cent) than urban respondents (62.0 per cent). However, in the combined,
urban / rural areas as many as 66.75 per cent respondents reported listening to radio.

The normal peak hour of listening radio in rural areas in between 7.00 PM to 7.30 PM
(41.0%) as revealed by data and in urban areas it is in between 6.30 PM to 7.00 PM i.e.
44.7%. As a whole, the peak hour of radio listening is 6.30 PM to 7.00 PM (40.3%)
followed by 7.00 PM to 7.30 PM (40.0%).

Primary channel reaches at 16.9% listeners daily (6-7 days) whereas 30.0% listeners
listen frequently and 44.2% occasionally.

It is asked to the listeners that they have listened primary channel on the previous day,
62.2 per cent respondents said they had listened on the previous day.
Area wise, more Urban respondents 65.3 per cent reported listening than Rural
respondents 59.4 per cent.
Gender wise, slightly higher 62.4 per cent male respondents reported listening against
61.8 per cent female respondents.

The respondents were asked to name the programmes they had actually listened to the
previous day and they were marked in a list of programme- sheet enclosed. In the rural
area, On the basis of that, highest actual listening for the day was the programme
Chitrapatt Sangeet at 09.30 AM in the Morning (46.0 per cent) and the other was
Hindi Samachar

at 06.05PM in the evening (45.5 per cent). In the urban area,

highest actual listening for the day was the programme Hindi Samachar at 06.05PM in
the evening (44.0 per cent) and the other was Film Sangeet at 12.30 PM in the Noon
(41.0 per cent). In combined, highest actual listening for the day was the programme
Hindi Samachar at 06.05PM in the evening (44.8 per cent) and the other was
Chitrapatt Sangeet (Film music programme) at 09.30 AM in the Morning (42.8 per
cent).

In order to assess the reception quality of AIR, Allahabad in the coverage zone, all
respondents were asked to state their opinion on the reception quality of AIR,

Allahabad. The data revealed that a clear maximum number of respondents (47.0%)
opined that reception quality of AIR was good while (9.0%) were of the view that the
reception quality was poor.

Survey Design, Methodology and objectives


The Directorate, Audience Research, DG, AIR, New Delhi centrally designed the study

whereas all the research units conduct the survey in different cities across the country.
This unit conduct the survey within 14 urban blocks in Allahabad city and 14 rural blocks
around it in the primary listening zone of AIR, Allahabad. A total of 400 radio households are
interviewed, through a structured questionnaire developed by Directorate, Audience Research,
New Delhi, selected randomly by the systematic sampling after the enumeration of 4800
households, 100 households serially in 48 randomly selected rural and urban areas. Actually
the whole operation was conducted in two phases, in the 1 st phase, enumeration of 2400
households in urban blocks and 2400 household in rural areas in 48 different areas selected
randomly and then in the 2nd phase, selection of 400 radio households, 200 in urban and 200
in rural for depth interview. The field survey has been conducted two days, which includes
programmes of one Sunday and one weekday. After the survey conducted in field by casual
investigators, a person is deputed to check the authenticity of thje data in urban and rural area.
Finally after scutinise the filled schedules, tabulation sheet is provide to tabulate the data
carefully. The main objectives of the surveys are :

To identify Primary Channel listeners from different Socio-economic milieu.

To assess radio listening pattern among radio households;

iii.

To assess weekly and daily reach of Primary Channel;

iv.

To assess ratings of programmes of Primary Channel;

v.

To find out the reception quality of Primary Channel and

vi.

To find out the expectations of listeners on Primary Channel.

3.

Profile of respondents
After the enumeration of 4800 radio households done in previous year, selection of 100

respondents in rural and urban areas was the primary job in every coverage day. For this
purpose, alternate 10 houses as well as random selection process is taken for interview. The
final figure of respondents day-wise after selection is given below in the table.

In the Radio Households listening to radio among rural respondents was slightly
higher (71.5 per cent) than urban respondents (62.0 per cent). However, in the combined,
urban / rural areas as many as 66.75 per cent respondents reported listening to radio.

previous day and they were marked in a list of programme- sheet enclosed. In the rural area,

In order to assess the reception quality of AIR, Allahabad in the coverage zone, all

respondents were asked to state their opinion on the reception quality of AIR, Allahabad. The
data revealed that a clear maximum number of respondents (47.0%) opined that reception
quality of AIR was good while (9.0%) were of the view that the reception quality was poor.

part.
Market price of different agriculture product may be regularly broadcast.
There should be programme on self-employment scheme. The young peoples desired
to listen career-oriented programmes giving information about self- employment,
technical education and employment in various organizations.
Programme on education should be included in rural programme.
Proper care should be taken during power cut as it affects the reception quality and
create irk among listeners.
Role of modern equipment and technology in the field of agriculture may be broadcast.
Silence/ pause may not be for a long time in between the programmes.
More latest film song may be broadcast.
