(The pupils will be answering the following problems written on the
flashcards in any way the pupils like to answer it)

B. Introduction

Did you have a hard time in adding and subtracting the following
problems?
The following problems can be solved easily without using any scratch
papers but with just your mind?

There are ways on how you can add or subtract numbers mentally; one
way is through splitting the numbers.

C. Recall

Before proceeding to adding and subtracting by splitting numbers, let the
pupils count by 10s, 100s and 1000s.

10s = 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100,

All these numbers that the pupils have counted are called MULTIPLES OF
10.

100s = 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900,

All these numbers that the pupils have counted are called MULTIPLES OF
100.

1000s = 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000,

All these numbers that the pupils have counted are called MULTIPLES OF
1000.


NOTE:

Numbers are easier to add or subtract if the numbers are multiples of 10,
100 or 1000.

Addition by Splitting Numbers

What is the sum of 370 and 30?

One of the two addend which are 370 and 30 should be splitted into two
to make it easier to add, and it easier to add when the numbers are in
multiples of 10, 100 or 1000.

370 can be splitted into two







Now it is easier to add the following numbers in your mind.
Solution:

370 + 30 = 300 + (70 + 30)
= 300 + 100
= 400
Therefore, the sum is 400.

Add 240 and 70.
In the next example you may choose what number to split, either 240 or
70, to get a multiple of 100.

b. 240 + 70 = (210 + 30) + 70
= 210 + (30 + 70)
= 210 + 100
= 310

= 700 + 50 = 750





b. 660 + 90 = (650 + 10) + 90
= 650 + (10 + 90)
= 650 + 100

What is 850 60?
The difference between adding and subtracting is in the way you split
numbers, in adding you only need one number to split. But in subtraction
two numbers must be splitted.
The goal is that when the two numbers are being split, two of those
spliited number are the same.






Split 850 as 800 and 50, and split 60 as 50 and 10. Subtract 50 and 50, then
800 and 10 will be left, subtract the remaining numbers. The difference
between 800 and 10 is 790.
Therefore, 850 60 is 790.

= 900 + 75 (75 + 10)

Addition and Subtraction by Splitting Numbers

(Answer the items in the book, page 94 of Lets Work Together, B)

1. 470 + 230

One of the two numbers must be splitted into two such that the
other number will be a multiple of 100.

Let us split 230 into two such that 470 will become a multiple of 100.

How many does 470 need to make it a multiple of 100?

470 + 30 = 500 and 500 is a multiple 500.

One part of 230 is 30 and the other part will be 200.

470 + 230




= (470 + 30) + 200
= 500 + 200
= 700

2. 360 + 80

One of the two numbers must be splitted into two such that the
other number will be a multiple of 100.

Let us split 80 into two such that 360 will become a multiple of 100.

How many does 360 need to make it a multiple of 100?

360 + 40 = 400 and 400 is a multiple 500.

One part of 80 is 40 and the other part will be 40.

In subtraction we can split both numbers.

Split 870 such that one part is a multiple of 100.

A. Recall

In the past lesson, the pupils have encountered the block-model
approach in solving addition and subtraction. We can use a single block,




or a double block,






Block Models helps represent numbers so you can solve easily.

B. Introduction

In solving problems involving addition and subtraction, use the block
model approach. This approach makes the problem situation clearer and
more vivid. The block model approach is one of the most effective
strategies in solving 2-step problem situations especially for comparative
purposes.

C. Lesson Proper

(Word problems will be presented and will be answered after the
introduction)

1. A flat screen TV costs Php. 34, 895. A refrigerator costs Php. 15, 948
less than the TV. What is the total cost of the refrigerator and the flat
screen TV?
Solution:

We are going to find for the total cost of the refrigerator and the flat
screen TV.

The price of the television was given which is Php. 34, 895.

The price of the television is not given, so we are going to find for it.

It is said that the refrigerator costs Php. 15, 948 less than the TV.

The first step is to find for the price of the refrigerator.

Php. 34, 895 Php. 15, 948 = Php. 18, 947.

The price of the refrigerator is 18, 947.

The second step is find the total cost of the refrigerator and the flat
screen TV.

Php. 34, 895 + Php. 18, 947 = Php. 53, 842

Therefore the total cost of the flat screen TV and the refrigerator is
Php. 53, 842.

2. The smaller of two numbers is 1210. The greater number is 420 more
than the smaller number. What is the sum of the two numbers?

The smaller number which is 1210.

Step 1: Find for the greater number
1210 + 420 = 1630
The greater number is 1630.
Step 2: Find the sum of the two numbers
1210 + 1630 = 2840
Final Answer:
The sum of the numbers is 2840.
3. There are 5706 people watching a live band concert. 3860 of them
are adults. There are 597 girls in the crowd. How many boys are
there?

Let us analyze the problem.

of people that are watching the concert. How can we find the
number of boys in the crowd?

We are going to find the number of children among the people
who are watching the concert.

First, we get the total number of children.








5706 3860 = 1846
Therefore there are 1846 children.
Since there are 1846 children separate the boys and the girls.
